Chapter 9: The Truth Nathan Hid

The phone slipped from my hand.

Daniel caught it before it hit the floor.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

The hallway of the records office suddenly felt too small.

Too quiet.

“What did you just say?”” Daniel asked.

Nathan didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“I said Leo was supposed to be mine.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

The kind that comes when a person hears the one sentence they never imagined.

I reached for the phone.

“Nathan, explain.””

His breathing was heavy.

“Sarah, I didn’t want this to happen like this.””

“Then how did you want it to happen?””

Silence.

“Seven years ago, you were scared.””

My eyes filled.

“Of course I was.””

“You were alone.””

“I wasn’t alone.””

Nathan’s voice softened.

“You had Daniel.””

I looked at Daniel.

And the guilt in his eyes hurt more than anything.

Nathan continued:

“But you thought Daniel hated you.””

My throat tightened.

Because he was right.

After Martha showed me the messages Daniel supposedly sent, I believed my husband wanted nothing to do with me.

I believed he had chosen his mother.

I believed leaving would protect Leo from growing up between two people who no longer loved each other.

But what I didn’t know was that Daniel had never sent those messages.

Martha had created them.

Nathan whispered:

“I found out the truth too late.””

Daniel grabbed the phone.

“Found out what?””

Nathan went quiet.

Then said:

“That Sarah was never leaving you.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

I watched him struggle with that.

Because it meant two years of anger had been built on a lie.

“Then why did you let it happen?”” Daniel asked.

Nathan didn’t answer.

“Why did you let me believe my wife abandoned me?””

The silence lasted so long I thought the call had dropped.

Then Nathan finally said:

“Because Martha threatened you.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“She told me if I exposed her, she would destroy Sarah.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

Nathan’s voice broke.

“She knew I was Leo’s biological father.””

The words were impossible.

But somehow they explained everything.

Daniel looked at me.

I shook my head.

“I didn’t know.””

Nathan continued.

“Neither did you.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Explain.””

“Sarah and I made a mistake.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The truth I had buried.

The truth that had haunted me.

The night before I married Daniel, I had a fight with him.

A terrible one.

I was young.

Angry.

Confused.

I left.

I found Nathan.

My best friend.

Someone who knew me before Daniel.

Someone who listened when I was falling apart.

One mistake.

One night.

One moment that changed everything.

But when I discovered I was pregnant, I knew exactly who I wanted to be with.

Daniel.

I chose Daniel.

And I never told him.

Because I was terrified.

But Nathan continued:

“I wanted to tell Daniel.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Martha found out first.””

The pieces clicked.

Martha knew about Leo.

She knew Nathan was alive.

She knew about the letters.

She knew everything.

“She used it against you,” I whispered.

Nathan went silent.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at me.

Then at the phone.

“What did she threaten?””

Nathan answered:

“She said if I came near Sarah or Leo, she would tell Daniel everything.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“She knew.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

I whispered:

“She knew I wasn’t leaving you because I didn’t love you.””

Nathan continued:

“She wanted you separated.””

“Why?””

Another silence.

Then Nathan said:

“Because she needed Daniel alone.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“For what?””

Nathan’s answer came quietly.

“Control.””

The word hung between us.

Daniel looked toward the window.

Toward the city outside.

Toward the life he thought he understood.

Then Nathan said:

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“Michael Carter wasn’t Elena’s first husband.””

Daniel waited.

Nathan continued:

“He was her brother.””

I froze.

Daniel stared at the phone.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Nathan’s voice dropped.

“It’s the reason everything happened.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

Nathan whispered:

“Because Michael and Elena shared a secret.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What secret?””

Nathan took a breath.

Then said:

“The DNA test wasn’t about Leo.””

A pause.

“It was about Elena.””

The call ended.

And seconds later, Daniel received a message.

One photo.

One sentence.

The photo showed Elena standing beside Michael Carter.

And the message said:

*Ask your wife why she buried the truth about my sister.*
