Chapter 3: The Woman Who Stole Two Years

The ballroom became a courtroom.

Nobody was eating.

Nobody was dancing.

Everyone was watching.

And for the first time in two years, Daniel was finally looking at the truth instead of the story someone had built for him.

“Elena,” he said slowly, “who is Michael Carter?””

She looked around desperately.

At the guests.

At her friends.

At the family members who had come to celebrate her wedding.

Then her eyes landed on me.

Like somehow I was still the person responsible for her disaster.

“This is because of her.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.””

“She’s been trying to ruin my life since the beginning.””

“I said don’t.””

Elena stepped closer.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“No. I understand exactly one thing.””

He held up the DNA report.

“You married me while hiding this.””

“That’s not what it is.””

“Then explain it.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Martha suddenly grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“Come with me. We can talk privately.””

Daniel pulled away.

“No more private conversations.””

Her face fell.

I knew that look.

I had seen it before.

The look of someone who realized they no longer controlled the room.

Daniel turned to me.

“Sarah.””

I froze.

I wasn’t prepared for my name coming from him like that.

“What?””

His voice softened.

“The letters.””

I looked down.

“I wrote them because I thought you deserved to know about Leo’s surgery.””

His eyes widened.

“What?””

I swallowed.

“When Leo was five, he had a heart condition. The doctors said we needed to monitor him closely.””

Daniel stared at me.

“You never told me?””

“I tried.””

The words came out quietly.

“I wrote you every week.””

His face changed.

“You said you stopped contacting me.””

“I never stopped.””

I looked toward Martha.

“She made sure you never knew.””

Daniel turned toward his mother.

Martha’s expression finally cracked.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice shook.

“You let me believe my son needed me less than I thought.””

“I was trying to protect your future.””

“My future?””

He looked around the room.

“At what point did my future stop including my son?””

Nobody answered.

Leo stepped closer to Daniel.

“Daddy?””

Daniel immediately looked down.

The anger disappeared from his face.

“What?””

“Are you mad at me?””

Daniel dropped to his knees.

“No.””

He touched Leo’s shoulder.

“I could never be mad at you.””

“Grandma said you were too busy.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

That sentence hurt him more than anything else.

“I was never too busy for you.””

Leo whispered:

“Then why didn’t you come?””

Daniel looked at me.

Because he finally understood.

The question wasn’t for him alone.

It was for both of us.

I looked away.

There were too many years between us.

Too many missed birthdays.

Too many nights when Leo asked why his father didn’t call.

Elena suddenly spoke.

“I can explain.””

Daniel stood.

“No. You can confess.””

Her face tightened.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“You think Sarah is innocent?””

The room went quiet.

Daniel looked at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Elena smiled sadly.

“She never told you why she left.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel turned to me.

“What does she mean?””

I felt every eye in the room on me.

The truth I had buried.

The reason I walked away.

The reason I never fought harder.

Because I thought protecting Daniel from the pain would be easier than forcing him to choose.

I whispered:

“Daniel, I was going to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Before I could answer, Martha reached into her purse.

She pulled out a photograph.

Then she placed it on the table between us.

Daniel picked it up.

His face changed instantly.

Because the photo showed me.

Standing outside a hospital.

Holding a newborn baby.

And beside me was a man Daniel recognized.

A man he believed had been dead for years.

Martha smiled faintly.

“Now you know why I hid the letters.””

Daniel looked at me, his voice barely audible.

“Sarah…”

He turned the photograph over.

Written on the back were five words.

“Ask her who the father is.””
