Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Envelope
Daniel held the envelope like it was something dangerous.
The ballroom remained frozen around us.
The wedding decorations, the flowers, the expensive champagne, the perfect white dress—all of it suddenly looked like a performance that had fallen apart in front of everyone.
Elena reached for him.
“Daniel, please.””
He moved the envelope away.
“Who is this addressed to?””
No one answered.
That silence was louder than any confession.
Leo held onto my hand.
I could feel his fingers squeezing mine.
Martha looked furious now.
Not embarrassed.
Not scared.
Furious.
“Sarah, this is your fault.””
I stared at her.
“My fault?””
“You brought him here.””
“I brought my son here because he was missing.””
“You always know how to destroy things.””
Daniel turned toward his mother.
“Stop.””
The word cut through the room.
Martha went quiet.
Daniel had always defended her.
Even when she criticized me.
Even when she blamed me for our divorce.
Even when she told him I was too emotional, too difficult, too selfish.
I remembered the last night I spent in our old house.
I was sitting on the bedroom floor, surrounded by boxes.
Daniel stood near the doorway.
“You need to calm down, Sarah.””
I looked at him through tears.
“Your mother has been deleting my messages.””
“That makes no sense.””
“She’s lying to you.””
“She’s my mother.””
“And I’m your wife.””
He had looked away.
That was the moment I knew I was losing him.
Not because he believed her.
Because he wanted to believe her.
Now, standing in that ballroom, I watched the same man finally question the person who had controlled him for years.
Daniel looked at Elena.
“Open it.””
She shook her head.
“There’s nothing to see.””
“Then open it.””
“Daniel—”
“Open. It.””
A waiter nearby looked uncomfortable.
Guests whispered.
Someone started recording.
Elena noticed.
Her expression hardened.
“You really want to do this here?””
Daniel laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“You brought two hundred people here to watch us promise honesty to each other.””
He held up the envelope.
“So let’s be honest.””
Elena’s hands trembled as she took it.
But before she could open it, Leo spoke.
“Grandma knew.””
Everyone looked at him.
Martha closed her eyes.
“Leo, stop.””
“No.””
My son’s voice cracked.
“You told Elena she didn’t have to worry because Daddy would never find out.””
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“Find out what?””
Leo looked at me.
I knelt beside him.
“Leo, are you sure?””
He nodded.
“I heard them.””
“When?””
“Yesterday.””
He wiped his face.
“Grandma was on the phone. She said you were gone, and nobody would believe you.””
My stomach twisted.
I looked at Martha.
“You told him I was gone?””
She said nothing.
Daniel took a step toward her.
“What does that mean?””
Martha’s eyes flashed.
“It means your ex-wife has always been dramatic.””
“No,” Daniel said quietly.
His eyes moved to the letters.
“It means you hid something from me.””
Martha’s expression softened.
“Daniel, I was protecting you.””
“From what?””
She didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Daniel grabbed the envelope from Elena.
He opened it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then his entire body became still.
I watched the man I once loved read something that broke him.
“What does it say?”” Elena whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
Not with anger.
Something worse.
Disbelief.
“You knew.””
Elena’s lips parted.
“Daniel…”
“You knew before we got married.””
The room erupted with whispers.
I stepped closer.
“What did he find?””
Daniel looked at me.
His eyes were filled with pain.
Then he handed me the paper.
The words blurred for a moment.
But one sentence was clear.
“Paternity test results: probability of biological relationship confirmed.””
My hands went cold.
I looked at Elena.
Then at Daniel.
Then at the name at the top of the report.
The man listed as the child’s father.
A man Daniel had never heard of.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Who is Michael Carter?””
Elena’s face went completely white.
May you like
And then Martha whispered something that made everyone turn.
“Because he isn’t the only secret she has.””
