Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Warning

The voice on the phone was shaking.

Not with fear.

With guilt.

Daniel held the phone tighter against his ear.

“Who is this?””

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then the woman whispered:

“You don’t know me, but I know exactly who you are.””

Daniel looked at me.

The expression on his face told me he was thinking the same thing I was.

Another secret.

Another person who had been watching from the shadows.

“Tell me your name,” Daniel demanded.

The woman hesitated.

“My name is Rachel.””

“Rachel who?””

Another pause.

“Rachel Carter.””

The color drained from my face.

Daniel noticed immediately.

“Sarah?””

I swallowed.

Carter.

The same last name as Michael Carter.

The same name on the DNA report.

The same name connected to Elena.

Daniel stepped away from the ballroom entrance.

“Why are you calling me?””

Rachel’s voice cracked.

“Because if you meet Nathan tonight, you’ll make the biggest mistake of your life.””

“Why?””

“Because Nathan didn’t disappear to protect you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you saying?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“I’m saying Nathan disappeared because he knew the truth was going to come out.””

Daniel looked toward the parking lot.

The image of Nathan waiting outside burned in his mind.

“You’re his family?””

“Yes.””

“Then why should I trust you?””

“You shouldn’t.””

The answer surprised him.

Rachel continued.

“But you should know this. Michael Carter wasn’t just Elena’s first husband.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

I felt my heart drop.

Rachel whispered:

“He was my brother.””

Everything stopped.

Daniel looked at me.

I could see the questions forming.

The connections.

The impossible timeline.

Elena had been married before.

Michael Carter had a family.

Nathan knew.

Martha knew.

Everyone knew except Daniel.

“Rachel,” Daniel said slowly, “what happened to Michael?””

The woman’s voice became quieter.

“He died.””

“When?””

“Six months before Elena met you.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

I watched him absorb every piece.

Every lie.

Every missing year.

“Was Elena responsible?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

And that silence said enough.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Answer me.””

“I don’t know.””

“You called me to warn me, but you don’t know?””

“I know what I saw.””

“What did you see?””

A long pause.

Then:

“I saw Elena leave my brother’s house the night before he died.””

The words hit the air like a gunshot.

Daniel looked toward the ballroom.

Elena was standing near the stage.

Watching him.

She knew something had happened.

She knew something was changing.

“Why didn’t you go to the police?””

Rachel’s voice broke.

“Because nobody believed me.””

“Why?””

“Because Martha made sure nobody listened.””

My eyes widened.

Daniel looked at me.

Again.

Always back to the same person.

His mother.

Rachel continued:

“Your mother was the one who told everyone Michael’s death was an accident.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“You said that about Nathan being alive too.””

Daniel had no response.

The line went quiet.

Then Rachel said:

“There’s something else you need to know.””

“What?””

“Your son.””

Daniel looked at Leo.

My son was sitting with my sister near the entrance, watching us.

“What about him?””

Rachel whispered:

“Leo’s birth records were changed.””

The world seemed to stop.

I felt the blood leave my face.

Daniel noticed.

“What did you say?””

“I said Leo’s birth records were changed.””

Daniel looked at me.

I couldn’t speak.

Because I knew something was wrong.

Seven years ago, the hospital had made me sign papers in a hurry.

A nurse told me there was a mistake in the system.

A doctor apologized.

I thought it was normal.

I thought hospitals were chaotic.

But now?

Now everything looked different.

Daniel’s voice became dangerous.

“Who changed them?””

Rachel whispered:

“Martha.””

The call ended.

Daniel stood there holding the phone.

Motionless.

I walked toward him.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

And for the first time that night, I saw something in his eyes that terrified me.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Sarah.””

“Yes?””

“What did you sign at the hospital when Leo was born?””

My mouth went dry.

“I don’t remember.””

“You need to.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He stared toward the ballroom.

Toward his mother.

May you like

Toward the woman who had spent years controlling the truth.

“Because I think everyone has been lying about my son.””
