Chapter 11: The Evidence Hidden Underground
The accusation hung in the air.
Martha.
Daniel’s mother.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who told him she protected him.
The woman who had spent years making him believe everyone else was the enemy.
Daniel stared at Rachel.
“Are you accusing my mother of murder?””
Rachel didn’t look away.
“Yes.””
The answer was too simple.
Too confident.
Daniel shook his head.
“You better have proof.””
Rachel reached into her bag.
“I do.””
She pulled out a small envelope.
Not like the ones Martha had hidden.
Older.
Worn.
The edges were damaged.
“This belonged to Michael.””
Daniel took it carefully.
“What is it?””
“The reason he died.””
I felt a chill.
Rachel looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you years ago.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because I thought Michael was wrong.””
She looked down.
“I thought he was paranoid.””
“What changed?”” I asked.
Her eyes filled.
“I found his files.””
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside were photographs.
Bank records.
Documents.
And a handwritten journal.
He read the first page.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the words were clear.
*Elena Carter is not who she claims to be.*
My heart raced.
Rachel explained.
“Michael discovered Elena had changed her name years ago.””
“Why?””
“Because she was running from something.””
Daniel flipped through the pages.
“Running from what?””
Rachel looked at him.
“Her past.””
A silence followed.
Then Daniel asked:
“And Martha?””
Rachel’s face hardened.
“She helped her.””
The room felt colder.
“Why?””
“Because they needed each other.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Your mother and Elena?””
Rachel nodded.
“Your mother had access to money.””
“And Elena?””
“She had information.””
Daniel stared at the documents.
“What kind of information?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then whispered:
“About your father.””
Daniel froze.
“My father?””
I watched his face change.
This was different.
This wasn’t about Elena.
This was about a wound he had never healed.
“My father died when I was sixteen.””
Rachel nodded.
“Did he?””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked furious.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Give me another mystery.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“I’m giving you the truth.””
“My father is dead.””
Rachel pulled out another document.
“Then why does he have a bank account under a different name?””
Daniel stared.
The color left his face.
“No.””
Rachel pointed at the paper.
“Your father didn’t die.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“My mother told me she watched him die.””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“She lied.””
The world was collapsing around him.
One lie after another.
One person after another.
“What does this have to do with Leo?”” Daniel asked.
Rachel looked at me.
Then at him.
“Everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
Rachel took a breath.
“Michael found out that Martha wasn’t just hiding your letters.””
Daniel waited.
“She was hiding your family history.””
Daniel frowned.
“My family history?””
Rachel nodded.
“Michael believed Leo’s birth records were changed because Martha was protecting something connected to Daniel’s father.””
I felt dizzy.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Rachel looked at me.
“It will.””
Daniel turned the page in Michael’s journal.
Then stopped.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Daniel slowly read the words aloud.
“‘The child is the key. If Martha discovers the truth, she will destroy everyone involved.’”
My heart pounded.
“The child?””
Rachel nodded.
“Leo.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
Rachel opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the lights inside the records office suddenly flickered.
Then went out.
Everyone froze.
A few seconds later, the emergency lights turned on.
And a security guard ran toward us.
“Someone broke into the archive room.””
Daniel stood.
“What was taken?””
The guard looked terrified.
“Only one thing.””
“What?””
The guard swallowed.
“The original birth records of Leonard Miller.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.

Someone knew we had found the truth.
And they were trying to erase it.
