Chapter 1: The Wedding Interruption
“Daddy, you need to know the truth about your bride.””
My seven-year-old son stood beneath the crystal chandeliers of the ballroom, holding a microphone with both hands, his tiny fingers shaking as he pointed directly at the woman standing beside his father.
The music stopped.
The laughter disappeared.
And every person in the room turned toward Elena.
Daniel looked at Leo as if the world had suddenly tilted beneath his feet.
“Leo?”” he whispered.
“What are you doing here?””
My son’s eyes filled with tears.
“Grandma Martha said I wasn’t allowed to come.””
A wave of whispers moved through the crowd.
I stood frozen near the entrance, my heart pounding so loudly I could barely hear anything else.
I had not planned to walk into Daniel’s wedding reception.
I had not planned to see him again.
For two years, I had avoided this exact moment.
But twenty minutes earlier, Leo had vanished from my sister’s house.
One second he was drawing superheroes at the kitchen table.
The next, his backpack was gone, his shoes were missing, and the front door was open.
I knew where he would go.
Somewhere deep inside, I knew he would find his father.
The father he still loved.
The father who believed I had walked away from him.
The father who never knew I had spent two years writing letters he never read.
Daniel stepped away from the stage and walked toward Leo.
“Why would Mom tell you that?”” he asked softly.
Leo looked down.
“She said you have a new family now.””
Daniel’s face changed immediately.
“That’s not true.””
Martha, Daniel’s mother, rushed forward from her table.
“He’s confused, Daniel. He’s a child.””
She reached for the microphone.
“Give that to Grandma, sweetheart.””
But Daniel caught her wrist before she could take it.
“Let him speak.””
The room became completely silent.
Martha stared at her son.
“Daniel, this is embarrassing.””
“No,” he said.
“What’s embarrassing is my son standing in front of everyone because nobody listened to him.””
Elena stepped closer, forcing a nervous smile.
“Leo, honey, maybe you misunderstood something you heard.””
My son looked at her.
“No, I didn’t.””
His voice was quiet, but every person heard him.
“I heard Grandma talking yesterday.””
Elena’s smile disappeared.
“What did you hear?””
Leo swallowed.
“You said after the wedding, Daddy’s money would finally belong to you.””
Someone at the nearest table gasped.
Daniel turned slowly toward Elena.
“What?””
She immediately shook her head.
“That’s ridiculous. He’s seven years old.””
“I never told him anything about you,” I said from the doorway.
Daniel’s eyes snapped toward me.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
“Sarah?””
My name sounded strange coming from him.
Like something from another life.
I walked across the ballroom, my heels clicking against the marble floor.
“I didn’t know he was here until tonight.””
Daniel stared at me.
“You came to my wedding?””
“No.””
I looked at Leo.
“I came because my son disappeared.””
Leo ran toward me, and I wrapped my arms around him.
His small body was trembling.
Daniel looked between us, confused.
“Why didn’t you call me?””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because after two years, that question hurt more than anger ever could.
“You didn’t answer my calls.””
His expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Before I could respond, Leo pulled away.
“Mom.””
He opened his backpack.
“I found something.””
Martha’s face instantly changed.
“Leo, no.””
That single sentence made everyone look at her.
Leo reached inside and pulled out a bundle wrapped in an old blue ribbon.
He handed it to Daniel.
“I found them in Grandma’s closet.””
Daniel slowly untied the ribbon.
Then he stopped breathing.
The envelopes fell open in his hands.
Every single one had his name written across the front.
In my handwriting.
His fingers moved over the first envelope like he was afraid it might disappear.
“Sarah…”
I looked away.
For two years, I had wondered why he never replied.
For two years, I thought he read my words and decided I wasn’t worth answering.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What are these?””
Martha stepped forward.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice was colder than I had ever heard.
“You told me Sarah stopped writing.””
Martha opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then Leo reached deeper into his backpack.
“There was one more.””
He pulled out a different envelope.
Not mine.
Daniel looked at it.
The color drained from his face.
Because the name written across the front belonged to someone none of us recognized.
And beneath it were four words that changed everything.
“DNA RESULTS ENCLOSED.””
Daniel slowly looked up at Elena.
“What is this?””
May you like
Elena took a step backward.
And for the first time that night, she looked afraid.
