The Letters He Never Received / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12: The Truth Buried Seven Years Ago

The archive room smelled like dust and old paper.

The broken lock hung from the door.

Daniel stood in the entrance, staring at the empty cabinet.

The place where Leo’s original records had been stored.

Gone.

Just like the letters.

Just like every piece of evidence that could expose the truth.

“They knew we were coming.””

His voice was quiet.

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel looked toward me.

Not suspicious.

Just realizing.

“The phone call.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“When Nathan called.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

Daniel continued:

“Someone was listening.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Martha.

Elena.

Someone.

Someone had been ahead of us every step.

The security guard cleared his throat.

“There is something else.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

The guard held up a small object.

“A camera caught this.””

He handed Daniel a tablet.

The footage showed the hallway outside the archive.

A woman entered.

Her face was covered.

But her clothes were familiar.

A dark coat.

A pearl necklace.

Daniel froze.

“No.””

I watched his expression.

“Daniel?””

He zoomed in.

The woman turned slightly.

Enough for us to see.

Martha.

“She came here.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“She’s cleaning up.””

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

“My mother.””

I touched his arm.

He looked at me.

“I spent my whole life defending her.””

His voice broke.

“And she destroyed mine.””

Before I could answer, Rachel pointed at the screen.

“Wait.””

Daniel looked.

The footage continued.

Martha wasn’t alone.

A second person entered.

A man.

Older.

Tall.

Daniel stepped closer.

The blood drained from his face.

“Impossible.””

The man turned toward the camera.

Daniel whispered:

“My father.””

Nobody spoke.

Because the man everyone believed was dead was standing inside the archive.

Alive.

Watching.

Waiting.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“Now you understand.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“My father helped them.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the footage again.

Something felt wrong.

The man wasn’t acting like a criminal.

He looked scared.

Like someone forced into something.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Daniel.””

He froze.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person your mother told you never existed.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with anger.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The voice trembled.

“I need you to listen before Martha finds me.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Where are you?””

“Close.””

“Why did you help her?””

Silence.

Then the man said:

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked him.

“I did.””

“Why?””

The answer came quietly.

“Because your mother convinced me that if you knew the truth, you would hate me.””

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Rachel.

Then at the screen.

“What truth?””

The man took a deep breath.

Then whispered:

“The night Leo was born, Martha didn’t change the records to hide Nathan.””

A pause.

“She changed them to hide me.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

The man’s voice cracked.

“Daniel…”

“Yes?””

“Leo is not the only child whose identity was changed.””

The line went silent.

Then came the words that shattered everything.

“Your mother switched two babies that night.””

Daniel went completely still.

I felt my knees weaken.

“No…”

The man continued:

“And one of those babies was supposed to be mine.””

The call ended.

At that exact moment, a new message appeared on Daniel’s phone.

One sentence.

May you like

One name.

*Ask Sarah why she was never told the truth about the second baby.*
