Chapter 6: The Name Engraved Inside The Ring
Daniel stared at Elena’s wedding ring.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Even the guests who had been whispering moments earlier were silent.
“Take it off.””
Elena’s face changed.
“What?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Take off the ring.””
She laughed nervously.
“Daniel, this is ridiculous.””
“Take it off.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
I knew that voice.
It was the voice Daniel used when he had already made a decision.
Elena slowly removed the ring.
Her hands were shaking.
Daniel took it.
He turned it over.
The engraving was small.
Almost impossible to notice.
But it was there.
Forever, Michael Carter.
The same name from the DNA report.
The same name that appeared on the envelope.
The same name that had followed Elena into the room where she promised Daniel a future.
Daniel looked up.
“Who is Michael Carter?””
Elena said nothing.
“Answer me.””
“He was nobody.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Nobody?””
He held up the ring.
“Your wedding ring has another man’s name inside it.””
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She looked around.
The guests.
The cameras.
The people who had come to celebrate.
Then she looked at Martha.
And I saw it.
The silent conversation between them.
They had a plan.
But the plan was falling apart.
Martha spoke first.
“Daniel, you need to think carefully.””
He turned.
“About what?””
“About who benefits from this.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“Sarah has always wanted you back.””
I felt the old anger return.
But before I could speak, Daniel did.
“Don’t.””
Martha froze.
“I mean it.””
For years, I had wished he would defend me.
Not because I needed saving.
Because I needed to know he believed me.
And now he finally did.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You lied about the letters.””
Martha said nothing.
“You lied about Sarah.””
Silence.
“You lied about Nathan.””
Her face hardened.
“I did what I had to do.””
The words landed like a confession.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Martha realized too late what she had said.
“I mean—”
“No.””
His voice broke.
“You just admitted it.””
She looked away.
I watched the woman who had controlled everything finally lose control.
Daniel turned to me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
I looked at him.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Every day after we separated.””
His face tightened.
“Then why didn’t I know?””
I looked at Martha.
Because the answer was standing right there.
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked exhausted.
Then his phone buzzed again.
A new message.
He opened it.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
He turned the phone toward me.
It was a photo.
Taken seconds earlier.
From outside the ballroom.
A man standing in the parking lot.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Nathan.
Under the picture was a message.
*I’m sorry I stayed away. But if you want the truth, bring Sarah. Come alone.*
Daniel looked at me.
“You knew he was alive.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“You saw him after he disappeared.””
“No.””
“Then why does he want you there?””
I had no answer.
Because I didn’t know.
And that terrified me.
Daniel looked toward the exit.
Martha stepped forward.
“Don’t go.””
Everyone looked at her.
She immediately corrected herself.
“I mean… it could be dangerous.””
Daniel studied her face.
Then he looked at Elena.
Then me.
Then Leo.
The boy who had accidentally uncovered everything.
“I’m going.””
My heart raced.
“Daniel—”
He looked at me.
“No more secrets.””
The words hurt.
But they were true.
He picked up his coat.
And as we walked toward the doors, Elena whispered something behind us.
Something only I heard.
“Sarah.””
I stopped.
She smiled faintly.
“You still don’t know what happened the night Leo was born.””
I turned around.
“What are you talking about?””
Her smile disappeared.
Because she realized she had said too much.
Daniel saw my face.
“What did she mean?””
Before anyone could answer, his phone rang again.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman’s voice whispered:
“Daniel, don’t meet Nathan.””
A pause.
“Because he isn’t the person who saved your family.””
May you like
The voice trembled.
“He’s the person who destroyed it.””
