Chapter 13: The Baby They Switched
The message stayed on Daniel’s phone for almost a full minute.
Neither of us moved.
Neither of us spoke.
The words sat there like a final piece of a puzzle nobody wanted to solve.
*Ask Sarah why she was never told the truth about the second baby.*
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Then he looked at me.
Not with anger.
Not with suspicion.
With confusion.
A terrible, heartbreaking confusion.
“Sarah.””
My name sounded different.
Like he was afraid of the answer.
I swallowed.
“I don’t know what that means.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Someone knows something.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Who?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Then Daniel looked back at me.
“But you know about a second baby.””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Because it was the truth.
“I swear.””
He searched my face.
And I hated that he had to.
I hated that after everything, there was still a part of him wondering if I was hiding something.
“I knew Leo’s records were wrong,” I said quietly.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“But I didn’t know why.””
“When did you find out?””
“The day I left the hospital.””
The memory came back instantly.
The fluorescent lights.
The nurse avoiding my eyes.
The doctor apologizing.
The paperwork that didn’t match.
I had been exhausted.
Terrified.
Holding my newborn baby.
And trusting the people around me.
“The nurse told me there was a filing mistake,” I continued.
Rachel whispered:
“Martha.””
I nodded.
“I asked questions.””
“And?””
“No one answered.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“You should have told me.””
“I tried.””
His expression changed.
“I know.””
Those two words hurt more than anger.
Because he finally believed me.
“I called you from the hospital.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I never got that call.””
“Because Martha answered.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Rachel looked back.
“She intercepted everything,” Rachel said.
“And the second baby?”” Daniel asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Rachel pulled out her phone.
“I found something before I came here.””
She opened a photo.
A hospital document.
My hands started shaking.
“What is that?””
Rachel handed it to Daniel.
He read it.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
He passed it to me.
At the top was the hospital name.
The date.
The same date Leo was born.
But underneath were two names.
Two mothers.
Two babies.
My eyes moved down the page.
And stopped.
*Baby A: Leonard James Miller.*
*Baby B: Adam Carter.*
I looked at Rachel.
“Adam?””
Her eyes filled.
“My nephew.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Michael’s son?””
Rachel nodded.
“My brother had a child.””
“But Elena—”
“Was not the mother.””
A cold silence followed.
Rachel continued.
“Michael discovered the truth after the birth.””
I stared at the paper.
“Then why did Elena’s name appear?””
“Because she took him.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“Michael found out Elena had stolen custody documents.””
Daniel shook his head.
“This makes no sense.””
“It does.””
Rachel’s voice hardened.
“Elena wanted Michael’s inheritance. She wanted his family money. But when she realized Michael’s son existed, she needed a way to control him.””
“And Martha helped?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?””
Rachel answered:
“Because Martha had her own reason.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“What reason?””
Rachel looked at him.
“Your father.””
The air changed.
Again.
Always back to him.
Rachel explained.
“Your father discovered Martha’s involvement.””
Daniel whispered:
“My father knew.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Rachel looked away.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of Martha?””
Rachel nodded.
“She threatened to destroy his reputation.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“My whole family was built on threats.””
Then a sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Everyone turned.
A man stood at the entrance.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Daniel froze.
“Dad?””
The man looked at him.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“You’re alive.””
“Yes.””
“For seven years.””
The man nodded.
“I was.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Why?””
His father looked at me.
Then Leo.
Then back at Daniel.
“Because I found out something I could never tell you.””
“What?””
The man whispered:
“Martha didn’t switch two babies.””
Everyone went silent.
“She switched three.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“Three?””
His father nodded.
“And one of them…”
May you like
He looked directly at Leo.
“…was never supposed to survive.””
