Chapter 10: The Secret Between Two Sisters
The photograph on Daniel’s phone felt heavier than paper.
Elena stood beside Michael Carter.
But that wasn’t what terrified me.
It was the woman standing next to them.
A woman I recognized.
A woman I had spent years trying to forget.
Daniel looked at me.
“You know her.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stared at the screen.
My hands went cold.
“Yes.””
“Who is she?””
I swallowed.
“Rachel.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“The woman who called me?””
I nodded.
“She’s Michael’s sister.””
He looked back at the photograph.
“Then why does Nathan say you buried the truth about her?””
I had no answer.
Not one that wouldn’t hurt him.
Not one that wouldn’t reopen wounds I had spent seven years trying to close.
“Sarah.””
I looked at him.
“Tell me.””
The way he said it broke something inside me.
Because years ago, I would have told him anything.
But after losing him once, I had learned how dangerous silence could be.
“I met Rachel before you and I separated.””
Daniel waited.
“Why?””
“Because she came to me.””
“About what?””
I looked down.
“About Leo.””
His face changed.
“Explain.””
I sat down on the bench outside the records office.
Daniel remained standing.
Like he wasn’t ready to accept whatever came next.
“After Leo was born, I received a letter.””
“From Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“What did it say?””
I closed my eyes.
“She said Michael was alive.””
Daniel’s breathing stopped.
“She told me Michael had evidence about Elena.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she also told me something else.””
“What?””
I looked at him.
“She said if Daniel ever found out about Leo, you would lose everything.””
His jaw tightened.
“You believed that?””
“I was scared.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“Of losing you.””
That stopped him.
For a moment, he looked less like a man demanding answers and more like the husband I remembered.
The man who used to hold my hand when I was nervous.
The man who whispered that we would survive anything.
Then he looked away.
“What happened next?””
I took a breath.
“I met Rachel in secret.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You met her?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“A coffee shop near the hospital.””
I remembered that day.
Rain against the windows.
Rachel sitting across from me.
Her hands shaking.
Her eyes full of anger and sadness.
“She told me Michael discovered something about Elena.””
“What?””
“That Elena had been using his identity.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“I didn’t know.””
“And you never found out?””
I shook my head.
“Because Rachel disappeared.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“One day she stopped answering.””
“Did you look for her?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“She was gone.””
Daniel paced slowly.
“This keeps getting worse.””
I didn’t disagree.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
He opened it.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He handed me the phone.
The message contained a location.
And three words.
*Come find me.*
Below it was a picture of Nathan.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was Martha.
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Daniel stared.
“When was this taken?””
I looked closer.
The timestamp.
Today.
Not seven years ago.
Today.
Martha was alive.
Nathan was alive.
And somehow they were together.
Daniel stood.
“She knew.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Everything.””
He looked toward the road.
“My mother knew Nathan was alive.””
I whispered:
“And she let me believe he abandoned us.””
Daniel’s eyes darkened.
“She let me believe you abandoned me.””
For the first time, we weren’t blaming each other.
We were standing on the same side.
Against the people who had destroyed us.
“We need to find Nathan.””
I nodded.
But before we could leave, a woman’s voice called my name.
“Sarah.””
I turned.
Rachel stood at the entrance of the building.
Her face was pale.
Daniel immediately stepped in front of me.
Rachel raised her hands.
“I’m not here to hurt you.””
Daniel stared.
“Then why have you been hiding?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of who?””
She looked past us.
Toward the street.
Then she whispered:
“Of the person who killed my brother.””
Daniel went still.
“Who?””
Rachel looked directly at me.
May you like
And said:
“Your husband’s mother.””
