Chapter 14: The Truth About Leo
Nobody spoke after those words.
Not even the person who said them.
Daniel’s father stood in the doorway, looking like a man who had carried a secret for too long.
Daniel walked toward him slowly.
“What does that mean?””
His father looked down.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Yes.””
Daniel’s voice shook.
“You should have.””
The older man nodded.
“I know.””
Leo stood beside me, holding my hand.
He didn’t understand everything.
But he understood enough to know the adults around him were scared.
I knelt beside him.
“It’s okay.””
He looked at me.
“Mom, are they talking about me?””
My heart broke.
I touched his face.
“Yes.””
“Did I do something wrong?””
“No.””
I pulled him closer.
“You did nothing wrong.””
Daniel heard that.
And his expression changed.
He walked over and knelt beside us.
“Leo.””
My son looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
Daniel struggled to answer.
“For every year I wasn’t there.””
Leo was quiet.
Then he asked:
“Are you still my dad?””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The answer came instantly.
“Always.””
For the first time that night, I saw something heal.
Not completely.
But enough.
Then Daniel stood.
He looked at his father.
“Tell me everything.””
The man sighed.
“Martha knew about the babies because she worked with the hospital administrator.””
Rachel looked shocked.
“She had access?””
“Yes.””
“And why?””
Daniel’s father looked at the floor.
“Because she was hiding a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Years earlier, Martha caused an accident that left a woman unable to have children.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel stared.
“What woman?””
His father looked at me.
I felt cold.
“No.””
The man nodded.
“The woman was Sarah’s mother.””
My breath disappeared.
Daniel looked at me.
“Your mother?””
I could barely speak.
“My mother told me she had fertility problems.””
“She was lied to.””
The room spun.
I had spent my entire life believing my family’s pain was natural.
A tragedy.
Bad luck.
But now?
It had a name.
Martha.
“Why?”” I whispered.
Daniel’s father answered.
“Because Martha believed she could control people by controlling their pain.””
Rachel looked disgusted.
“She destroyed lives.””
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“And the babies?””
His father continued.
“Three children were connected to that night.””
He pointed at Leo.
“Leo.””
Then Rachel.
“Adam.””
Then Daniel.
I frowned.
“Daniel?””
The man nodded.
“Martha discovered years later that Daniel wasn’t your biological son.””
The words hit harder than anything before.
Daniel stepped back.
“What?””
His father looked broken.
“I found out when you were sixteen.””
Nobody moved.
“You’re saying I’m not your son?””
“I’m saying you are my son.””
He looked at Daniel.
“Blood doesn’t change that.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Then whose child am I?””
The man swallowed.
“Martha’s secret.””
A horrible silence.
Then Rachel whispered:
“Michael.””
Everyone looked at her.
She continued:
“Michael Carter was searching for his biological family.””
Daniel stared.
“No.””
His father nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel’s face went blank.
“You’re telling me…”
He couldn’t finish.
Rachel did.
“You and Michael were brothers.””
The world stopped.
The man who Daniel thought was only his father’s friend.
The man whose name was connected to Elena.
The man whose DNA report started this nightmare.
Was actually his brother.
I watched Daniel struggle to breathe.
“My entire life…”
His father stepped closer.
“I know.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“My mother knew.””
“Yes.””
“She knew everything.””
“Yes.””
“And she still…”
He couldn’t finish.
Because the truth was too cruel.
Then the door behind us opened.
Everyone turned.
Elena stood there.
But she wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t afraid.
She looked calm.
Too calm.
“I wondered how long it would take you to figure it out.””
Daniel stared.
“Elena.””
She smiled faintly.
“You were always smarter than your mother gave you credit for.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“You killed Michael.””
Elena looked at her.
“No.””
She smiled.
“But I know who did.””
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“Who?””
Elena looked at me.
Then at Leo.
Then at Daniel.
May you like
And whispered:
“The person you’ve trusted the most.””
