Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Daniel walked away from the crowd, but everyone followed him with their eyes.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody dared.

The ballroom had transformed from a wedding celebration into a place where secrets were being dragged into the light.

“Where are you?”” Daniel asked into the phone.

His voice was barely controlled.

The person on the other end breathed heavily.

“Somewhere safe.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only answer I can give you right now.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“You’ve been alive for seven years.””

“I know.””

“And you never called me?””

Silence.

That silence hurt more than any explanation.

Daniel looked at me.

I could see the questions in his eyes.

Why didn’t you tell me?

Why did you hide this?

Why did everyone around me know something I didn’t?

I wanted to answer.

But I knew tonight wasn’t about what I wanted.

It was about what was true.

Nathan’s voice came through again.

“Daniel, listen carefully.””

“I’m listening.””

“Martha knows I’m alive.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

She immediately looked away.

“And Elena?””

Another pause.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“She knows too.””

The call went silent.

Then Nathan said:

“Then you’re already too late.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What does that mean?””

“It means they know the letters were found.””

Martha suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, who is that?””

He looked at her.

And for the first time in his life, he didn’t protect her.

He didn’t soften his answer.

He simply said:

“Someone you told me was dead.””

The color drained from Martha’s face.

Guests began whispering louder.

Elena grabbed her purse.

“I think everyone needs to calm down.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Why?””

She stopped.

“Because this is insane.””

“No.””

He looked at the DNA report.

Then the letters.

Then the photograph.

“This is the first honest conversation we’ve had in years.””

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re going to believe her?””

Daniel looked at me.

That question hurt.

Because it reminded me of every time he chose someone else’s version of me.

But before I could say anything, Leo spoke.

“Daddy?””

Daniel immediately looked down.

“What is it?””

Leo pointed toward Martha.

“Why did Grandma take Mom’s letters?””

Martha’s face changed.

The anger disappeared.

For one second, she looked like a woman who knew she had lost.

“Leo, adults have complicated problems.””

My son shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was small.

“But hiding letters is wrong.””

Nobody expected that.

Especially Martha.

Daniel knelt beside Leo.

“You’re right.””

He looked at his son.

“You’re absolutely right.””

Leo hugged him.

And something inside me broke.

Because that was the moment I realized Daniel wasn’t the same man who left me two years ago.

The man in front of me finally saw what he had lost.

Nathan’s voice interrupted.

“Daniel.””

Daniel stood again.

“I’m here.””

“You need to find the original letters.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

“The letters Sarah wrote weren’t the only things Martha hid.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

Nathan continued.

“Seven years ago, before I disappeared, I left proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“Proof that the divorce between you and Sarah wasn’t caused by her.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

Nathan’s voice became quieter.

“Martha changed the messages between you two.””

The room seemed to spin.

Daniel whispered:

“No.””

“Yes.””

Nathan continued.

“She wanted you separated.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then Nathan said the words that made Daniel’s face go blank.

“Because she knew Sarah’s baby wasn’t the only child connected to this family.””

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Nathan didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Daniel, before I disappeared, I found out Elena had been lying about who she was.””

Elena’s face turned white.

Daniel looked at her.

“What did you find?””

Nathan whispered:

“The truth about her first marriage.””

Elena stepped backward.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

But Daniel was no longer looking at her like a bride.

He was looking at her like a stranger.

“Why are you afraid?””

She didn’t answer.

And that was when Daniel noticed something.

The wedding ring on Elena’s finger.

A ring he had given her.

A ring that suddenly looked like a piece of evidence.

Because engraved inside it were three words.

May you like

Words he had never seen before.

*Forever, Michael Carter.*
