Chapter 9: The Truth Inside The House

The old Carter family house looked different at night.

Smaller.

Darker.

Almost like it was hiding something.

I stood outside the front door with the police behind me.

This was where Vanessa had brought me.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

She had entered my life here.

She had smiled here.

She had played the role of someone who loved my family.

And all this time, she was building a trap.

The officer looked at me.

“We don’t know if she’s inside.””

I stared at the house.

“I know she is.””

“How?””

I looked at the upstairs window.

Because the light was on.

The light in Lily’s bedroom.

The room where Vanessa took that photo.

The room where she watched my daughter sleep.

I stepped forward.

The officer grabbed my arm.

“Wait.””

But I couldn’t.

My daughter was in there.

I opened the door.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

“Vanessa!””

My voice echoed.

No answer.

We moved through the hallway.

Every picture on the wall felt like a lie.

My wedding photo.

Family dinners.

Smiling faces.

All fake.

Then I saw something on the table.

A photo album.

I opened it.

My stomach turned.

It wasn’t a family album.

It was a collection of my life.

Photos of me.

Sarah.

Lily.

Noah.

Emily.

Years of watching.

Years of planning.

The officer looked over my shoulder.

“She documented everything.””

I turned the page.

A handwritten note.

*Phase One: Replace Sarah.*

Another page.

*Phase Two: Remove Michael’s doubts.*

Another.

*Phase Three: Become Lily’s mother.*

My hands trembled.

Then I found the final page.

*Phase Four: Reveal the truth.*

I frowned.

Reveal?

Why would Vanessa want me to discover everything?

Then I heard footsteps.

Upstairs.

I ran.

“Michael!””

The officer followed.

I reached Lily’s bedroom.

The door was open.

Inside was Vanessa.

Standing beside the window.

And beside her…

Sarah.

Alive.

But tied to a chair.

My heart stopped.

“Let her go.””

Vanessa smiled.

“You came.””

I looked at Sarah.

“Are you hurt?””

She shook her head.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Still protecting him.””

I stepped inside.

“Where is Lily?””

Vanessa looked confused.

“What?””

“Where is my daughter?””

She smiled.

“She’s safe.””

I didn’t believe her.

“You threatened me.””

“No.””

She tilted her head.

“I warned you.””

The officer moved closer.

Vanessa immediately grabbed something from the table.

A small envelope.

“Before anyone does anything…”

She looked at me.

“You deserve the full truth.””

I stared at her.

“I already know enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

She held up the envelope.

“This is why Sarah really disappeared.””

Sarah’s face changed.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What’s inside?””

Sarah started crying.

“Michael, don’t.””

That was all I needed to hear.

I took the envelope.

Inside was a DNA report.

My hands shook as I read the first line.

Then the result.

*Paternity excluded.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa whispered:

“The truth.””

I stared at Sarah.

“Whose child is Noah?””

Sarah closed her eyes.

And in that moment, I knew.

There was one more lie.

One more secret.

One more person who had betrayed me.

Then the bedroom door behind me slowly opened.

A small voice whispered:

“Daddy…”

I turned.

And saw Lily standing there.

Holding someone’s hand.

My heart stopped.

Because the person standing beside her was the last person I expected.

May you like

My father.

The man I buried six years ago.
