Chapter 7: The Woman Who Wanted My Daughter

The message stayed on my screen.

*You finally know the truth. Now come find your daughter before I do.*

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the hospital machines.

Not the voices outside the room.

Not the officer asking me questions.

Only one sentence repeated in my mind.

Come find your daughter before I do.

I turned toward Lily.

She was sitting in the corner of the room beside my mother.

Her small hands were wrapped around a stuffed rabbit she had carried since she was three.

She looked terrified.

And I hated myself for that.

Because a few hours earlier, she had stood in front of an entire church trying to save me.

And I had been the one who hurt her.

“Daddy?””

I walked toward her.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

But children don’t hide fear well.

Especially from their parents.

“Is Vanessa coming back?””

I knelt down.

“No.””

My voice was firm.

“She’s not taking you anywhere.””

Lily looked at me.

“You said that before.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

I swallowed.

“You’re right.””

My mother looked away, crying quietly.

“I was wrong before.””

Lily studied my face.

“Are you going to believe me now?””

I felt tears forming.

“Yes.””

I held her hand.

“Always.””

The officer cleared his throat.

“Michael, we need to move.””

“Where?””

“We found Vanessa’s vehicle abandoned near an old storage facility.””

Daniel suddenly spoke from the bed.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

His face had lost all color.

“She wouldn’t go there.””

The officer looked at him.

“You know where she would go?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

I stepped closer.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Vanessa has a place.””

“What place?””

“A place where she keeps things.””

My stomach tightened.

“Things?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Evidence.””

The word hung in the air.

The officer grabbed his jacket.

“Take us there.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at me.

“She doesn’t keep evidence to protect herself.””

“What does she keep it for?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“To destroy people.””

The storage facility sat on the edge of Atlanta, hidden behind abandoned buildings and rusted fences.

The rain had started by the time we arrived.

The place looked exactly like somewhere nobody was supposed to find.

The officer unlocked the door.

Inside were dozens of boxes.

Photos.

Documents.

Hard drives.

A whole life of secrets.

My stomach turned.

“This is insane,” I whispered.

Daniel walked slowly inside.

“She planned everything.””

I opened one box.

Inside were newspaper clippings.

My name.

Sarah’s name.

Articles about our marriage.

Our daughter.

Even my father’s death.

Vanessa had been watching us for years.

The officer picked up a folder.

“Michael.””

I turned.

He held out the papers.

“Look.””

I took them.

They were adoption forms.

My hands shook.

“Why does Vanessa have adoption paperwork?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because she wanted legal rights over Lily.””

I flipped through the pages.

The forms were almost complete.

My signature was missing.

But everything else was prepared.

Even my daughter’s new name.

I felt sick.

“She was going to erase me.””

Nobody answered.

Then I saw another folder.

A picture was attached to it.

A picture of Lily.

Sleeping.

Taken inside my own house.

I froze.

The date was written underneath.

Three months ago.

“She was spying on her.””

Daniel looked at the photo.

“She always did.””

I turned toward him.

“And you let her.””

His face fell.

“I thought I could control her.””

I laughed.

“You thought?””

Daniel looked broken.

“I made a deal with her.””

The room became silent.

“What deal?””

He looked at me.

“She promised she would leave you alone if I helped her get close to you.””

My jaw tightened.

“You introduced me to her.””

He nodded.

“I thought she just wanted money.””

“And when did you realize?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“When she started talking about Lily.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What did she say?””

Daniel whispered:

“She said Lily was the only thing standing between her and the family she deserved.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Sarah.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Michael, listen carefully.””

“What?””

“Vanessa isn’t running away.””

I frowned.

“Then what is she doing?””

Sarah paused.

“She’s going after the one person who can expose her.””

My eyes moved toward Daniel.

“Who?””

Sarah’s voice dropped.

“Me.””

The call ended.

At that exact moment, a sound came from the back of the storage room.

A door closing.

Everyone turned.

The officer pulled his weapon.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

Then a small voice whispered:

“Daddy?””

My blood froze.

That voice.

Lily.

I ran toward the sound.

But when I opened the door, there was nobody there.

Only a phone sitting on the floor.

The screen was playing a video.

May you like

A video of Vanessa.

And behind her was my daughter.
