Chapter 10: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
For five seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Sarah.
Not Vanessa.
Not even the police officer standing behind me.
Because the man holding my daughter’s hand was impossible.
My father.
The man whose funeral I attended six years ago.
The man whose ashes were sitting in an urn on my mother’s fireplace.
The man I watched disappear beneath the ground.
“Dad?””
The word barely left my mouth.
The older man looked at me.
His face was thinner.
His hair was completely gray.
But it was him.
My father.
Richard Carter.
Lily stepped closer to me.
“Daddy, I found him downstairs.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Sarah.
Then my father.
My entire life had become a puzzle where every missing piece was a person I thought I had lost.
The police officer immediately raised his hand.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
My father slowly released Lily’s hand.
“Michael.””
I couldn’t move.
“You’re alive.””
He nodded.
“I am.””
My voice shook.
“Why did I bury you?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa laughed quietly.
A cold, empty laugh.
“Because that was the plan.””
I turned toward her.
“What plan?””
Her smile disappeared.
For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.
My father stepped forward.
“I need to tell you everything.””
I stared at him.
“You had six years.””
His expression broke.
“I know.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I had no choice.””
I almost laughed.
“No choice.””
The same phrase.
The same excuse.
Everyone who destroyed my life used it.
Sarah.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
Now him.
My father looked down.
“Your brother found out first.””
My stomach tightened.
“Daniel?””
He nodded.
“Daniel discovered what Vanessa was doing.””
I looked confused.
“Then why did he help her?””
My father sighed.
“Because he was already involved.””
The room went silent.
Sarah looked at me.
“Michael…”
I ignored her.
I looked at my father.
“Tell me.””
He took a deep breath.
“Years ago, before you met Vanessa, Daniel was drowning in debt.””
I clenched my jaw.
“I knew that.””
“No, you didn’t.””
My father looked toward Vanessa.
“She offered him a way out.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“I didn’t force anyone.””
My father looked at her.
“You manipulated everyone.””
She smiled.
“And yet you’re the one who disappeared.””
The officer stepped forward.
“Someone explain what’s happening.””
My father looked at him.
“Six years ago, I discovered Vanessa and Daniel were planning to take control of Michael’s assets.””
My heart sank.
“But why fake your death?””
My father looked at me.
“Because I found proof.””
“What proof?””
“Documents. Bank transfers. Messages.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Evidence that they planned to make you disappear too.””
A chill moved through me.
“What?””
Sarah looked down.
“That’s why I ran.””
I turned.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“Not everything.””
Her voice cracked.
“But enough.””
I looked at the woman I thought I had lost.
“You knew my father was alive?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation hurt.
“Sarah.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The room spun.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
“How long?””
“Four years.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew for four years?””
“I was trying to protect Lily.””
I looked at my daughter.
Then back at Sarah.
“You keep saying that.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because it’s true.””
I wanted to believe her.
But I didn’t know what was real anymore.
My father stepped closer.
“Michael, I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“You abandoned me.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I thought distance would keep you alive.””
“You were my father.””
“I know.””
“You watched me mourn you.””
“I know.””
My voice broke.
“Do you know what that did to me?””
He looked away.
“I watched.””
The words shocked me.
“What?””
“I watched from a distance.””
My blood ran cold.
“You watched me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His voice became softer.
“Because Vanessa was watching you too.””
I looked around the room.
The walls suddenly felt like they were closing in.
Everyone had been watching me.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone had a reason.
Except me.
Vanessa suddenly smiled.
“You’re all blaming me.””
She stepped forward.
“But nobody is asking the real question.””
I looked at her.
“What question?””
She pointed at Sarah.
“Why did Sarah really leave?””
Sarah went pale.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Sarah?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time…
She looked afraid.
Not of Vanessa.
Of me.
“Michael…”
I swallowed.
“What did you do?””
Before she could answer, the police officer’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Everyone looked at him.
He slowly lowered the phone.
“We found Daniel.””
I stepped forward.
“Is he okay?””
The officer looked at me.
“He’s conscious.””
A pause.
“But he confessed to something.””
My heart pounded.
“What?””
The officer looked toward Sarah.
“He said Sarah wasn’t the victim.””
May you like
The room went silent.
“He said she was the person who started all of this.””
