Chapter 8: The Recording Vanessa Left Behind

I couldn’t move.

The video played automatically.

Vanessa sat in a dark room.

Her makeup was gone.

Her wedding dress was replaced by a black sweater.

She looked nothing like the woman who had walked down the aisle that morning.

Behind her, Lily was sitting on a chair.

My heart stopped.

“Lily!””

My daughter screamed from behind me.

“I’m here!””

I turned.

She was still beside my mother.

The video was old.

A recording.

Vanessa looked into the camera.

“Michael, if you’re watching this, then you finally know.””

She smiled sadly.

“I always wondered how long it would take.””

I clenched my fists.

“You’re sick.””

The officer watched silently.

Vanessa continued.

“You think I’m the villain.””

She laughed.

“But you never asked why I did any of this.””

The video showed her walking closer to the camera.

“I spent years watching Sarah destroy everything.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Destroy?””

Vanessa’s voice became bitter.

“She had the perfect husband. The perfect daughter. The perfect life.””

The officer whispered:

“She’s trying to justify it.””

I ignored him.

Because I needed to know.

Vanessa continued.

“When I lost Emily, I lost everything.””

Daniel looked away.

The pain on his face was obvious.

“She took my daughter.””

Sarah’s voice suddenly came through the phone speaker.

I looked at my phone.

She was listening too.

“What is she talking about?””

I didn’t answer.

Vanessa stared into the camera.

“Sarah thinks she’s innocent because she saved Emily.””

The video changed.

A hospital hallway appeared.

A younger Vanessa was crying.

A baby was being carried away.

I felt sick.

Emily.

“This was the day everything changed.””

Vanessa’s voice continued.

“Sarah found out Daniel was my child’s father.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She threatened to expose us.””

I looked at him.

“Did she?””

He whispered:

“No.””

Vanessa continued.

“She wanted to destroy me.””

The screen returned to her face.

“So I destroyed her first.””

My heart pounded.

“She didn’t die.””

The room went silent.

“She disappeared because I made sure she had nowhere to go.””

My hands shook.

The truth was finally coming out.

But there was still something missing.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“And Michael…”

She smiled.

“Your wife knows more than she told you.””

Sarah suddenly spoke.

“Turn it off.””

I looked at the phone.

“What?””

“Turn it off.””

Her voice sounded scared.

“Why?””

Silence.

Then she said:

“Because she’s right.””

My stomach dropped.

“What are you hiding?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

The officer looked at me.

“Michael?””

I stared at the phone.

“Sarah.””

Finally, she whispered:

“I lied to protect you.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

“About what?””

A long pause.

Then:

“About Noah.””

My eyes closed.

“No.””

“Michael…”

“No.””

I couldn’t hear another secret.

Not another hidden child.

Not another betrayal.

Sarah cried.

“When Vanessa came after me, I made a choice.””

“What choice?””

“I left because I knew if I stayed, she would come after Lily.””

My voice cracked.

“You left me.””

“I left to save you.””

The same words.

Everyone used the same words.

Protect.

Save.

Help.

But everyone only protected themselves.

The video continued.

Vanessa looked directly at the camera.

“You’re probably angry right now.””

She smiled.

“Good.””

The screen went black.

Then a new message appeared.

A location.

And one sentence.

*Come alone if you want Lily to live.*

My heart stopped.

Everyone looked at me.

The officer immediately shook his head.

“Absolutely not.””

Daniel stood.

“You can’t go.””

I stared at the message.

Because I knew something.

Vanessa wasn’t bluffing.

She had spent years planning.

She knew exactly how to hurt me.

And she knew the one thing I would never risk.

My daughter.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Vanessa’s voice whispered:

“Michael.””

I froze.

“Where is Lily?””

A quiet laugh.

“You still don’t understand.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Understand what?””

Her voice became colder.

“I never wanted your money.””

A pause.

“I wanted you to feel what I felt.””

The call ended.

And seconds later, the officer’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Michael…”

My heart sank.

“What happened?””

The officer swallowed.

“We just found Sarah.””

Everyone froze.

“Where?””

May you like

He looked down.

“She’s been taken.””
