Chapter 5: The Brother Who Betrayed Me
The hospital smelled like antiseptic and fear.
I stood outside the emergency room doors, unable to move.
Three hours earlier, I was supposed to be celebrating my wedding.
I was supposed to be taking pictures.
Cutting cake.
Starting a new chapter.
Instead, I was waiting to find out if my own brother would survive.
The officer stood beside me.
“You don’t have to be here.””
I stared through the glass doors.
“Yes, I do.””
Because despite everything…
He was still my brother.
The man who held my hand at my father’s funeral.
The man who helped me when Sarah disappeared.
The man I trusted more than anyone.
And somehow, that was the part that hurt the most.
A nurse walked out.
“Family of Daniel Carter?””
I stepped forward.
“I’m his brother.””
She looked at me carefully.
“He’s awake.””
I entered the room.
Daniel looked terrible.
A bandage covered his forehead.
His arm was wrapped.
But his eyes were the same.
The same eyes that lied to me for years.
When he saw me, he looked away.
“Michael.””
I stood beside the bed.
“Why?””
He closed his eyes.
I expected excuses.
A lie.
Anything.
But instead, he whispered:
“I was trying to fix it.””
I laughed quietly.
“Fix what?””
He looked at me.
“Everything.””
“You destroyed my family.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“She did.””
I froze.
“Vanessa?””
Daniel nodded.
“She went too far.””
The room became silent.
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
He didn’t answer.
“You knew Sarah was alive.””
His silence was enough.
My chest tightened.
“You let me believe my wife was dead.””
“I thought it was safer.””
“For who?””
He looked down.
“For Lily.””
I stepped back.
“Don’t say her name.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
My voice rose.
“You erased a woman from my life. You hid my son. You helped someone steal my identity.””
He looked at me.
“I never wanted Noah hidden.””
“Then why was he?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because Vanessa threatened everyone.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
He looked toward the door.
“Michael, you don’t understand who Vanessa really is.””
I almost laughed.
“Really?””
I pulled out my phone.
The fake pregnancy.
The documents.
The custody agreement.
“I think I understand enough.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became urgent.
“You still don’t know the worst part.””
The door opened.
The officer entered.
“Michael, we need to talk.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
The officer hesitated.
“We found evidence that Daniel was attacked before he could turn himself in.””
I frowned.
“Turn himself in?””
Daniel looked away.
The officer continued.
“He contacted us two weeks ago.””
I looked at my brother.
“You were going to confess?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I tried.””
“Why didn’t you?””
He gave a painful smile.
“Because Vanessa found out.””
The room felt colder.
“What did she do?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She showed me something.””
“What?””
“A video.””
My stomach tightened.
“Of what?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Something close to fear appeared.
“Of Sarah.””
I stepped forward.
“What about Sarah?””
He looked at me.
“She wasn’t kidnapped.””
The words hit me like a punch.
“What?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Sarah left willingly.””
I stared.
“No.””
“She did.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because she was hiding something.””
My heart pounded.
“What was she hiding?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said:
“The baby.””
I felt sick.
“What baby?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“The baby Sarah had before Noah.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
His voice dropped.
“It’s the reason everything started.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Sarah had another child?””
Daniel nodded.
“And Vanessa knew.””
The monitor beside him beeped faster.
I looked at him.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I’m saying Noah wasn’t the first secret Sarah kept from you.””
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Sarah.
One sentence.
*Don’t believe Daniel. He’s trying to save himself.*
Then another message arrived.
A photo.
It showed Sarah standing beside a little girl.
A little girl who looked about five years old.
And underneath the picture was a name.
*Emily Carter.*
May you like
My daughter.
Another daughter I never knew existed.
