Chapter 1: The Moment Everything Fell Apart

“Daddy! That’s not a real baby!””

My six-year-old daughter’s scream stopped my wedding before I could say the words “I do.””

One second, I was standing beneath the white flowers and golden lights of St. Michael’s Church in Atlanta, staring into Vanessa’s tearful eyes.

The next second, 150 guests were staring at my little girl like she had just shattered the most beautiful moment of my life.

For eight months, I had imagined that day.

I imagined Vanessa walking down the aisle with one hand resting on her round belly. I imagined introducing my daughter Lily to her new baby brother or sister. I imagined our broken family becoming whole again after years of loneliness.

After losing my first wife, Sarah, four years earlier, I never thought I would stand at an altar again.

Then Vanessa came into my life.

She was warm. Patient. Understanding.

Most importantly, she seemed to love Lily.

Or at least, I thought she did.

“Michael,” Vanessa whispered, tightening her fingers around mine, “please control your daughter.””

Her voice sounded calm, but something in her expression felt different.

Almost afraid.

I looked down at Lily.

She was standing in the middle of the aisle, her small white dress wrinkled from running. Tears streamed down her face, but she wasn’t acting like a child throwing a tantrum.

She looked terrified.

“Lily,” I said quietly, forcing a smile because everyone was watching.

“Sweetheart, come here.””

She shook her head.

“No, Daddy. I have to tell you.””

The church became silent.

My mother, sitting in the front row, covered her mouth.

The pastor lowered his Bible.

“Tell me what?”” I asked.

Lily pointed directly at Vanessa’s stomach.

“She’s lying about the baby.””

A wave of whispers moved through the church.

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“What did you just say?”” she asked.

Lily stepped back.

“I saw her take it off.””

My heart dropped.

I felt every eye in that church burning into me.

My cheeks became hot with embarrassment.

“Lily,” I said, my voice becoming sharper, “this is not funny.””

“I’m not joking!””

“Apologize to Vanessa.””

Her little lips trembled.

“But Daddy—”

“Now.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“I’m sorry you’re mad, but I’m telling the truth.””

Vanessa placed a hand over her stomach and looked at the guests.

“I don’t know why she would say something like this.””

There was something about the way she said it.

Like she already knew exactly how everyone would react.

Like she had prepared for this moment.

But I was too angry to notice.

All I could see was my daughter ruining the wedding I had spent months planning.

“Lily,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“Say sorry.””

“No.””

The word hit me harder than I expected.

My frustration exploded.

Before I could think, my hand moved.

The sound of the slap echoed through the church.

The entire room froze.

Lily stumbled backward.

Her tiny hand covered her cheek.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

I stared at my daughter, horrified by what I had done.

“Daddy…” she whispered.

Her voice broke something inside me.

“Why don’t you believe me?””

My mother immediately stood up.

“Michael!””

She rushed toward Lily.

“She’s your daughter!””

But Lily pulled away from her grandmother.

“No.””

She wiped her tears.

“I have to prove it.””

Vanessa suddenly took a step back.

“Michael, get her away from me.””

The panic in her voice was strange.

Not anger.

Fear.

Lily turned toward the emergency sewing kit sitting near the altar. The church always kept one there for torn dresses or loose buttons.

She grabbed a small sewing needle.

My stomach twisted.

“Lily, put that down.””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Then let me show you.””

Vanessa’s face changed instantly.

“GET THAT CHILD AWAY FROM ME!””

Everyone gasped.

Lily walked forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She reached toward Vanessa’s enormous belly.

“Stop!”” Vanessa screamed.

But Lily had already made her choice.

The needle touched the fabric beneath Vanessa’s dress.

A sharp hissing sound filled the church.

At first, nobody understood.

Then everyone watched.

The giant pregnancy belly began shrinking.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Like a balloon losing air.

Vanessa grabbed her dress, trying desperately to cover herself.

But it was too late.

The truth was standing in front of everyone.

There was no baby.

No pregnancy.

Just a fake silicone belly strapped around her body.

My legs went weak.

My mother whispered the words everyone was thinking.

“Oh my God.””

I dropped beside Lily.

“Sweetheart…”

She looked away.

I wanted to apologize.

I wanted to tell her I was sorry.

But she wouldn’t even look at me.

Vanessa backed toward the altar.

“Michael, please.””

Her voice shook.

“I can explain.””

I stood up slowly.

“Explain what?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then I noticed something.

Something hidden underneath the collapsed fake belly.

A small black pouch was strapped tightly against her waist.

I reached for it.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“No.””

That one word made my blood run cold.

I pulled the pouch free.

Inside was a second phone.

Several documents.

And a photograph.

A photograph of a newborn baby.

My hands started shaking.

The baby was wearing a hospital bracelet.

A bracelet with my last name.

And underneath the picture was a birth certificate.

I read the name.

My heart stopped.

The mother listed on the document wasn’t Vanessa.

It was Sarah.

My first wife.

The woman I buried four years ago.

Then the hidden phone suddenly lit up.

Incoming video call.

The name on the screen made everyone gasp.

Sarah.

My dead wife’s name.

Before I could touch the phone, Lily grabbed my arm.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Daddy…”

I looked at her.

“That’s the lady Vanessa makes me talk to when you’re at work.””

May you like

And in that moment, I realized the fake pregnancy wasn’t the biggest lie.

It was only the beginning.
