Chapter 13: The Grandmother Behind Everything

The room went silent.

Not the kind of silence that comes after an argument.

The kind that comes when reality breaks.

I slowly turned around.

My mother stood near the doorway.

Her face was pale.

Her hands were shaking.

“Mom?””

She didn’t answer.

Lily moved closer to me.

“She was there.””

My heart pounded.

“Where?””

My daughter looked at my mother.

“When Mommy disappeared.””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Lily, sweetheart, you don’t understand.””

I stepped between them.

“No.””

My voice was low.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

My mother looked at me.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

She flinched.

Because she knew.

The phrase meant nothing anymore.

The officer stepped forward.

“Ma’am, I need you to explain.””

My mother looked around the room.

At the police.

At my father.

At Sarah.

Then at me.

And something inside her broke.

“I never wanted this.””

I stared.

“Then why did you let it happen?””

She covered her face.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Of her.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa looked confused.

“Me?””

My mother nodded.

“She was never just after Michael.””

The room became colder.

“She was after all of us.””

I stepped closer.

“Start talking.””

My mother sat down.

And for the first time in my life, she looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like she had been carrying a secret too heavy for one person.

“Six years ago, when Richard disappeared, I found documents.””

She looked at my father.

“Proof that Daniel and Vanessa were planning something.””

My father nodded.

“I knew.””

I looked between them.

“You both knew?””

My mother cried.

“We tried to stop it.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Daniel threatened us.””

My jaw tightened.

“What did he threaten?””

She looked at Lily.

“To take your daughter.””

The words hurt.

Because Lily was the weapon everyone used.

Everyone.

My mother continued.

“Vanessa convinced Daniel that if Michael lost everyone he loved, he would become easier to control.””

My father’s face hardened.

“She manipulated him.””

My mother nodded.

“But Daniel was willing.””

I looked down.

My brother.

The person who betrayed me.

The person who destroyed everything.

Then my mother said something that made everyone freeze.

“But Daniel wasn’t the first person Vanessa controlled.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at Sarah.

“Ask her.””

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

My mother’s eyes filled with regret.

“You deserve to know.””

I looked at Sarah.

“What?””

Sarah looked away.

My mother whispered:

“Vanessa didn’t meet Daniel six years ago.””

A chill moved through me.

“When did she meet him?””

“Before Sarah met you.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

My mother nodded.

“She knew Sarah first.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

I turned toward her.

“You knew Vanessa before me?””

Sarah whispered:

“Yes.””

The room spun again.

“How?””

Sarah took a deep breath.

“She worked at the same hospital where I gave birth to Lily.””

My daughter looked confused.

“But why?””

Sarah looked at her.

“Because Vanessa was watching.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Watching for what?””

Sarah answered quietly.

“For a way into my family.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“You planned this from the beginning?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

For the first time, she looked desperate.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Sarah.

“She ruined my life.””

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“I ruined yours?””

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You had everything.””

“No.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“You wanted what I had.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“I wanted justice.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“You wanted revenge.””

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

That was the worst part.

Then the officer’s radio crackled.

A voice came through.

“We found Daniel.””

Everyone froze.

The officer answered.

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“He’s at the Carter family property.””

My stomach dropped.

“That’s impossible.””

The officer looked at me.

“He requested to speak with Michael.””

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Daniel.

*Come alone. I know who killed Sarah.*

I looked at the screen.

Then at everyone around me.

My mother.

My father.

Sarah.

Vanessa.

Every person I loved had lied.

But Daniel had one answer left.

Who really tried to destroy my family.

I walked toward the door.

Sarah grabbed my arm.

“Michael, don’t go.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation told me everything.

“Because if Daniel tells you the truth…”

May you like

She whispered:

“You’ll never forgive me.””
