Chapter 3: The Secret Beneath My Own Roof
I stared at the photograph until the words stopped making sense.
Daniel.
My brother.
Standing inside Lily’s bedroom.
At night.
Watching my daughter sleep.
My hands began shaking.
“Michael?””
My mother’s voice sounded far away.
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
Because suddenly every strange moment from the last eight months came rushing back.
The times Daniel asked about my finances.
The times he encouraged me to marry Vanessa quickly.
The times he told me Lily was just “struggling with change.””
He wasn’t protecting me.
He was controlling the situation.
“Daddy?””
Lily’s voice pulled me back.
I looked down.
Her eyes were red.
She looked smaller than ever.
I knelt beside her.
“I’m sorry.””
She didn’t say anything.
“I should have listened.””
Still nothing.
“I should have believed you.””
Her lips trembled.
“I told you.””
“I know.””
“You said I was embarrassing you.””
The words cut deeper than any accusation.
Because she wasn’t trying to hurt me.
She was telling me the truth.
The truth I refused to hear.
I pulled her into my arms.
But after a second, she whispered:
“I was scared.””
I closed my eyes.
“Of Vanessa?””
She nodded.
“She said if I told you, you would send me away.””
My heart shattered.
“No one is ever sending you away.””
But before I could say more, Vanessa screamed.
“Michael!””
Everyone turned.
She was standing near the altar, tears running down her face.
“I made mistakes, but I love you.””
I slowly stood.
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you lie?””
She looked away.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She didn’t answer.
That silence told me everything.
My phone rang.
Unknown number again.
I answered immediately.
“Who is this?””
A man’s voice responded.
“Michael, you need to get out of that church before the police arrive.””
I froze.
“Who are you?””
“You don’t have time.””
I recognized the voice.
Daniel.
My brother.
“You were in my daughter’s room.””
Silence.
Then:
“You saw the photo.””
My blood ran cold.
“Where is Sarah?””
Another silence.
“Michael…”
“Where is my wife?””
Daniel sighed.
“She was never supposed to contact you.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What did you do?””
Before he answered, Vanessa suddenly grabbed the phone from my hand.
“Daniel?””
Everyone heard.
Her mistake was immediate.
She realized what she had done.
I stared at her.
“You two are still talking.””
She dropped the phone.
“No…”
“You said you didn’t know him.””
“I can explain.””
I laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“How many times are you going to say that?””
The church doors opened.
Two police officers walked inside.
Everyone turned.
One officer held a folder.
“Michael Carter?””
I stepped forward.
“Yes.””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“We received a report involving fraud, identity theft, and a missing person case.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
The officer continued.
“The name Sarah Carter came up.””
My breathing stopped.
Sarah.
“She’s alive,” I said.
The officer looked surprised.
“You already know?””
I nodded.
Then he handed me the folder.
“We found these documents connected to your home address.””
I opened it.
Inside were copies of legal papers.
Bank records.
Photos.
And one document that made my stomach twist.
A custody agreement.
Between Vanessa and Daniel.
For my daughter.
Lily.
The date was two months earlier.
Before my wedding.
Before Vanessa even claimed to be pregnant.
I looked at Vanessa.
She started crying.
“Michael, please.””
I held up the document.
“You were planning to take my daughter.””
“No.””
“Then why is your name on this?””
She had no answer.
The officer looked at me.
“There’s more.””
My hands went numb.
“What more?””
He reached into the folder and pulled out an old photograph.
A photograph from four years ago.
Sarah.
Vanessa.
And Daniel.
Standing together outside the hospital.
The day Lily was born.
On the back of the picture was a handwritten note.
Three words.
*The plan begins.*
I looked at the faces in the photograph.
Then I looked at my daughter.
And I realized the worst part.
The people who betrayed me had not entered my life recently.
They had been waiting.
For years.
Then my phone buzzed one more time.
This time, it wasn’t a message.
It was a video.
From Sarah.
And before I pressed play, I saw the first frame.
Sarah was sitting in a dark room.
May you like
And beside her was someone I never expected to see.
My four-year-old son.
