Chapter 12: The Funeral That Hid The Truth

I stared at the document.

Sarah Carter.

Dead.

Six years ago.

The same year everyone told me she was gone.

Except she wasn’t.

She was standing in front of me.

Alive.

My hands trembled.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

Sarah looked at the paper.

And her face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You knew about this.””

The accusation came from me.

She looked at me.

“Michael…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

The room felt like it was shrinking.

“Every time I think I know the truth, there’s another secret.””

Sarah whispered:

“I can explain.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

The officer looked at the document.

“Is this real?””

My father nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The officer turned.

“Then we have a serious problem.””

I looked at him.

“What problem?””

He held up the paper.

“According to official records, Sarah Carter died six years ago.””

I looked at Sarah.

“So who was buried?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa smiled.

“I know.””

Everyone turned.

She looked almost relieved.

Because finally, the attention wasn’t on her.

“It wasn’t Sarah.””

My heart pounded.

“Then who?””

Vanessa looked at Sarah.

“Tell him.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“I can’t.””

“You have to.””

The officer stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, if there was a false death certificate, we need answers.””

Sarah sat down.

Her strength disappeared.

“I was trying to disappear.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel found me.””

The room went silent.

Sarah continued.

“He knew I had evidence against him.””

“What evidence?””

She looked at me.

“Proof that he planned to take your company.””

I frowned.

“Then why fake your death?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Daniel tried to kill me.””

Nobody moved.

The memory came back.

The hospital.

The funeral.

The phone call telling me my wife was gone.

My entire life changed because of one phone call.

Sarah continued:

“I survived.””

My voice was quiet.

“Then who died?””

She looked away.

“I don’t know.””

The answer made no sense.

“You don’t know?””

Sarah shook her head.

“Daniel handled everything.””

My father suddenly spoke.

“That’s why I investigated.””

I looked at him.

“And found what?””

His expression darkened.

“That the person buried as Sarah Carter was someone connected to Daniel.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Who?””

My father looked at me.

“Vanessa’s mother.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa stopped smiling.

“What?””

My father nodded.

“She helped Daniel create the illusion that Sarah was dead.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

For the first time, she looked genuinely shocked.

“My mother died years before.””

My father looked at her.

“She didn’t.””

The room went silent.

I stared at Vanessa.

“You didn’t know?””

She looked terrified.

“No.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

For the first time, Vanessa wasn’t in control.

She was discovering something too.

My phone buzzed.

Daniel again.

This time, it was a video.

I pressed play.

Daniel appeared on the screen.

His face looked exhausted.

“Michael.””

Everyone gathered around.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“I don’t have much time.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why are you sending this?””

His eyes moved.

Like he was afraid someone was watching.

“Because Vanessa is not the mastermind.””

The room froze.

I looked at Vanessa.

Daniel continued:

“She thinks she is.””

A pause.

“But she was used too.””

My father stepped closer.

“By who?””

Daniel looked at the camera.

Then said the words that changed everything.

“The person who planned all of this…”

The video glitched.

His voice became distorted.

Then returned.

“…is someone Michael trusts more than anyone.””

The screen went black.

Everyone stared.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily quietly tugged my sleeve.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

She was holding something.

A small envelope.

“Vanessa gave me this before she ran.””

My heart stopped.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Lily looked scared.

“She said I should only give it to you when you found out the truth.””

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

*Your daughter knows who the real enemy is.*

I looked at Lily.

“What does that mean?””

She started crying.

“Daddy…”

Her voice shook.

“I saw who hurt Mommy.””

The room went silent.

I knelt down.

“Who?””

Lily looked behind me.

At the person standing in the doorway.

May you like

And whispered:

“It was Grandma.””
