Chapter 4: The Son I Never Knew Existed

The video froze on the first frame.

Sarah sat in a dark room, her face pale and exhausted.

And beside her was a little boy.

A boy with my eyes.

My hair.

My face.

My hand tightened around the phone.

Nobody in the church moved.

The police officer looked at me.

“Do you know who that child is?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I didn’t.

Not officially.

Not in my heart.

Not in any way a father should.

My whole life had just been rewritten in front of me.

“Michael?”” my mother whispered.

I pressed play.

The video began.

Sarah looked directly into the camera.

“Michael, if you’re watching this, then Vanessa’s plan failed.””

Her voice cracked.

The little boy beside her looked confused.

“Mommy, who are you talking to?””

Sarah gently touched his shoulder.

“Someone very important.””

Then she looked back at me.

“This is Noah.””

The boy waved awkwardly.

“Hi.””

My chest tightened.

“Noah?””

Sarah nodded.

“He’s your son.””

The church disappeared.

The voices.

The people.

The cameras.

Everything faded.

All I could see was that child.

My son.

A child I never knew existed.

A child who had been alive for four years while I believed I had lost everything.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching the screen too.

Her eyes filled with confusion.

“Daddy…”

I swallowed.

“Sweetheart…”

“Do I have a brother?””

That question broke me.

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“Yes, you do.””

On the video, Sarah continued.

“When Lily was born, I discovered I was pregnant again. I was going to tell you after we came home from the hospital.””

She looked down.

“But Vanessa found out first.””

My jaw tightened.

“She came to the hospital pretending to visit us.””

The video showed Sarah crying.

“She told me Daniel had convinced you that I was unstable. That you would believe anything they said.””

I looked at the floor.

Because I remembered.

After Lily’s birth, Sarah had disappeared.

Everyone told me she left.

Everyone told me she abandoned us.

I spent years hating a woman who had never left me.

“She threatened to hurt Noah if I contacted you,” Sarah said.

My fists clenched.

“She said Daniel had access to your accounts. Your house. Everything.””

The little boy beside her looked up.

“Mommy, is that Daddy?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Yes.””

Noah smiled.

A tiny, innocent smile.

“Can I meet him?””

I covered my mouth.

I couldn’t stop the tears.

“I’m sorry,” Sarah whispered.

“I tried.””

The video ended.

The church remained silent.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“You don’t understand.””

I turned toward her.

The anger inside me felt heavier than anything I had ever carried.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You’re right.””

I stepped closer.

“I don’t understand how someone could do this.””

She started crying.

“I loved you.””

“No.””

The word came out instantly.

“You loved what I had.””

Her face twisted.

“That’s not true.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The police officer stepped forward.

“Vanessa Carter, we need you to come with us.””

She looked terrified.

“Michael.””

I stared at her.

“Don’t.””

That one word stopped her.

She looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“You’re choosing them?””

I almost couldn’t believe what I heard.

“You’re asking me that?””

Her expression hardened.

For a second, the sadness disappeared.

And I saw the person underneath.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What did you sacrifice?””

She looked toward the doors.

Then whispered:

“Everything.””

Before the officers could move, Vanessa reached into her wedding dress.

My heart jumped.

“Stop!””

But she didn’t pull out a weapon.

She pulled out a small envelope.

She threw it onto the floor.

“This is the truth about Sarah.””

I stared at it.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

“You think she’s innocent?””

Nobody spoke.

“She never told you everything.””

The officer picked up the envelope.

“Don’t open that here.””

But I couldn’t stop myself.

I needed answers.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Not old.

Recent.

Sarah standing outside a building.

And beside her was Daniel.

Holding hands.

My stomach dropped.

Vanessa whispered:

“You think I was the only one lying?””

I looked at the photograph.

Then at the phone.

Then at my daughter.

I didn’t know who to believe anymore.

Because the woman I thought was dead was alive.

The woman I thought loved me was a criminal.

And the brother I trusted was somewhere in the middle of it all.

Then the police officer’s radio crackled.

A voice came through.

“Officer, we have a problem.””

Everyone looked up.

The officer touched his radio.

“What kind of problem?””

The response made every person in the church freeze.

“The man identified as Daniel Carter has been found.””

A pause.

“He’s outside the hospital.””

My heart stopped.

“Why is he at a hospital?””

May you like

The officer looked at me.

“Because someone tried to kill him.””
