Chapter 6: The Daughter Hidden From Me

I stared at the photo until my vision blurred.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life that existed without me knowing.

Emily.

The name felt impossible.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who is she?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

“Who is Emily?””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“She’s Sarah’s daughter.””

My heart pounded.

“No.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

I stepped backward.

“Sarah had another child?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Before Noah.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if you know the whole story.””

I wanted to scream.

But I couldn’t.

Because every answer created ten more questions.

“Tell me.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Sarah was pregnant before you met her.””

The room went silent.

I felt numb.

“She never told me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

He didn’t answer.

The door opened.

My mother walked in.

She looked between us.

“What’s happening?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel said quietly:

“Sarah had a daughter before Michael.””

My mother froze.

“What?””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

Her face changed.

And that was when I knew.

My mother knew.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who held me when Sarah disappeared.

She knew.

“Mom?””

She looked away.

My voice broke.

“You knew?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She couldn’t answer.

“After another four years?””

She covered her mouth.

“Michael…”

I turned away.

Everyone I loved had pieces of the truth.

Everyone except me.

My phone buzzed again.

Sarah.

This time, I answered immediately.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Michael, listen.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You disappeared. You let me mourn you. You let me raise Lily thinking her mother was gone.””

Sarah started crying.

“I had no choice.””

“You always had a choice.””

A long silence followed.

Then she said:

“Emily wasn’t supposed to exist in your life.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah took a shaky breath.

“Because Emily wasn’t mine.””

The room went silent.

I felt the blood leave my face.

“What?””

Sarah whispered:

“She was Vanessa’s daughter.””

I couldn’t move.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

Sarah continued.

“Before you met Vanessa, she had a child.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Why would she hide her own daughter?””

Sarah’s voice broke.

“Because Emily was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Vanessa had been planning this for years.””

The hospital room felt smaller.

I looked at the photograph again.

The little girl.

Emily.

A child connected to all of us.

“How?””

Sarah answered:

“Emily was born from a relationship Vanessa had with Daniel.””

I turned slowly.

Toward my brother.

He closed his eyes.

The truth landed.

Hard.

My brother.

My future wife.

A hidden child.

A fake pregnancy.

A stolen identity.

It was all connected.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t look at me.

“Is it true?””

His silence was an answer.

I felt something inside me break.

“You were together?””

Daniel finally looked up.

“Before you knew her.””

“And Emily?””

He nodded.

“I’m her father.””

I stepped back.

The man I trusted most.

The woman I almost married.

Their secret child.

My entire world had been built on lies.

Then Sarah spoke again.

“Michael, there’s something else.””

I closed my eyes.

“What now?””

Her voice became softer.

“Vanessa didn’t fake that pregnancy because she wanted your money.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because she was trying to replace me.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Sarah whispered:

“She wanted to become Lily’s mother.””

I looked at my daughter across the hospital room.

And suddenly I understood.

The wedding.

The fake baby.

The custody papers.

It wasn’t about becoming my wife.

It was about taking Sarah’s place.

Then the hospital lights flickered.

The officer suddenly rushed into the room.

“Michael.””

I turned.

His face was serious.

“We just received a report.””

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“Vanessa escaped custody.””

My blood went cold.

“How?””

The officer hesitated.

Then said:

“Someone helped her.””

I already knew the answer before he spoke.

Because my phone received one final message.

May you like

From Vanessa.

*You finally know the truth. Now come find your daughter before I do.*
