Chapter 14: The Last Confession

The old Carter property had been abandoned for years.

The house where my father raised me.

The place where I learned to ride a bike.

The place where I believed my family was safe.

Now it looked like a crime scene.

The police followed behind me.

But Daniel wanted me alone.

So I walked inside first.

The front door was open.

“Daniel?””

No answer.

I stepped into the living room.

Everything was covered in dust.

Except one chair.

Someone had been sitting there recently.

Then I heard footsteps.

Daniel appeared from the hallway.

He looked worse than before.

More tired.

More broken.

“You came.””

I stared at him.

“You said you knew who killed Sarah.””

He nodded.

“I do.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked at me.

“I did.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

Daniel looked down.

“I was there.””

My chest tightened.

“What are you saying?””

He swallowed.

“Six years ago, I was the one who found Sarah after Vanessa attacked her.””

I felt sick.

“You found her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you help her?””

Tears appeared in his eyes.

“Because I was scared.””

I laughed.

Everyone was scared.

Everyone had a reason.

“You let me suffer.””

“I know.””

“You let Lily grow up without her mother.””

“I know.””

“You let me think you were my brother.””

He looked at me.

“I was.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You weren’t.””

Daniel looked like he accepted that.

“I deserve that.””

I stepped closer.

“Why?””

He took a deep breath.

“Because Vanessa threatened Emily.””

My expression changed.

“Your daughter?””

He nodded.

“She said if I betrayed her, Emily would disappear.””

I thought about the little girl.

The child caught in everyone else’s war.

“You should have come to me.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I was ashamed.””

That answer hurt.

Because it was human.

But it didn’t fix anything.

He continued.

“I helped Vanessa at first.””

My jaw tightened.

“I know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t know everything.””

He reached into his pocket.

And handed me a small flash drive.

“This is everything.””

I looked at it.

“What is it?””

“Every conversation. Every payment. Every plan.””

“Why give it to me now?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because I realized Vanessa wasn’t going to stop.””

I looked around.

“Where is she now?””

Daniel looked away.

“She’s going after the last person who can expose her.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Daniel whispered:

“Lily.””

I immediately turned toward the door.

But Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Wait.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

“Michael.””

His voice broke.

“You need to know what happened that night.””

I stopped.

“What night?””

“The night Sarah disappeared.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at me.

“Sarah wasn’t attacked because of money.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

He looked at me.

“Because she found out Vanessa was planning to use Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“Use her for what?””

Daniel answered:

“To replace Emily.””

I didn’t understand.

Then he explained.

“Vanessa wanted Lily to become the daughter everyone loved.””

My hands curled into fists.

“She wanted my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Emily rejected her.””

I froze.

“What?””

He continued.

“Emily knew Vanessa wasn’t safe.””

A terrible realization hit me.

Vanessa wasn’t just trying to take my family.

She was trying to build a new one after destroying the old one.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Vanessa.

“Michael.””

My blood ran cold.

“Where is Lily?””

A pause.

Then:

“She’s with me.””

My heart stopped.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Nothing.””

“Let her go.””

“Not until you listen.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

Vanessa continued.

“You think I’m the monster.””

Her voice cracked.

“But the person you trusted most was the one who started this.””

I clenched my jaw.

“Who?””

Silence.

Then she said:

“Ask your mother why she switched the hospital records the day Lily was born.””

The call ended.

I froze.

Hospital records.

The day Lily was born.

I looked at Daniel.

Then at the flash drive.

Then toward the door.

Because suddenly I understood.

The biggest secret wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t even Sarah.

May you like

It was Lily.

And the truth about her birth.
