Chapter 9: The Enemy I Never Forgot

The name on the document stared back at me.

Thomas Reed.

A name I hadn’t spoken in twenty years.

A name I never expected to see again.

Ethan noticed my reaction.

“Dad?””

I couldn’t answer immediately.

Because memories came rushing back.

The old office.

The broken partnership.

The betrayal.

Thomas had been my closest friend.

Before he became my greatest enemy.

Twenty years earlier, Bennett Hospitality was just beginning to grow.

Thomas and I built the company together.

We were brothers in everything except blood.

Until the day I discovered he had been secretly moving company money into personal accounts.

I confronted him.

He denied everything.

Then he disappeared.

Leaving me to repair the damage alone.

I never saw him again.

Until tonight.

Vanessa watched my face carefully.

“You know him.””

I looked at her.

“You’ve been working with Thomas?””

She smiled slightly.

“So you remember.””

The room became tense.

Ethan looked between us.

“Who is Thomas Reed?””

I didn’t look away from Vanessa.

“The man who tried to destroy my company before.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Try?””

Her confidence returned.

“He almost succeeded.””

I stepped closer.

“Where is he?””

She said nothing.

“Where is Thomas?””

Instead of answering, she looked at Ethan.

“Ask your father why he never told you about him.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Dad?””

I sighed.

“Because I wanted to protect you.””

“From what?””

“From learning that not everyone who smiles at you is your friend.””

He looked away.

That sentence hurt him.

Because he was realizing the same lesson I learned twenty years ago.

The difference was…

I learned it from a business partner.

He learned it from his wife.

The security supervisor spoke.

“Chairman, we tracked the document source.””

“And?””

“It came from an offshore account.””

“Owned by Thomas?””

He nodded.

“But there’s a problem.””

“What?””

“He’s not hiding.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

The supervisor handed me his phone.

On the screen was a news article.

The headline made my stomach tighten.

*FORMER BUSINESS PARTNER THOMAS REED RETURNS TO ATLANTA AFTER TWO DECADES.*

The article showed a photograph.

Thomas.

Older.

But unmistakable.

“He’s been in Atlanta for weeks,” the supervisor said.

I stared at the picture.

Weeks.

The same amount of time Vanessa had been planning this.

The same amount of time she had been getting close to my family.

This was never just a wedding scam.

It was something bigger.

Claire looked at me.

“Richard, what would Thomas want?””

I answered immediately.

“Revenge.””

Ethan looked shocked.

“Over a company?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I looked back at the photograph.

“Over losing.””

The truth was, Thomas never cared about money.

He cared about being the person everyone respected.

He couldn’t stand that I rebuilt what he tried to destroy.

He couldn’t stand that my name survived.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“You’re still missing something.””

I turned.

“What?””

She smiled.

A calm, dangerous smile.

“Thomas didn’t come back because of your company.””

“Then why?””

She looked at Ethan.

“Because of your family.””

My expression changed.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Thomas knew something about your past.””

Nobody moved.

“What?””

She leaned forward.

“Something even your son doesn’t know.””

Ethan looked confused.

“Dad?””

I ignored him.

“Don’t play games.””

“I’m not.””

She pointed at Claire.

“Ask him about the night Claire was born.””

Claire froze.

I looked at her.

“What?””

Her face changed.

“Richard…”

Ethan stared.

“What is she talking about?””

I felt the room spinning.

Because Vanessa had just mentioned something impossible.

Something buried for decades.

Something only a handful of people knew.

“Where did you hear that name?”” I asked.

Vanessa smiled.

“Thomas told me.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“What exactly did he tell you?””

She reached into her purse.

Slowly.

Everyone watched.

She pulled out a photograph.

An old photograph.

She placed it on the table.

I looked down.

And my entire world stopped.

It was a picture of Thomas.

My wife.

And a newborn baby.

A baby I had never seen.

A baby who existed before Ethan.

I looked at Claire.

Then at the photograph.

And for the first time in twenty years…

I wondered if the betrayal that destroyed my business…

had started long before I ever knew.

Vanessa whispered:

“Richard, you don’t know the truth about your own family.””

May you like

Then she smiled.

“Because your wife never told you everything.””
