Chapter 4: The Secret Heir
The ballroom remained frozen after my question.
“Did you know Ethan wasn’t my only heir?””
Vanessa’s face lost all color.
For the first time that night, she looked smaller.
Not because she was ashamed.
Because she was afraid.
Ethan looked between us.
“Dad… what are you talking about?””
I watched him carefully.
The pain in his eyes looked real.
But pain alone did not erase betrayal.
I had spent decades learning one thing in business: people revealed their priorities when they thought nobody was watching.
Vanessa had revealed hers.
She thought I was gone.
She thought my company was unprotected.
She thought my son was easy to manipulate.
She was wrong about one thing.
She didn’t know me.
“I think everyone deserves to hear the truth,” I said.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“Richard, this is not the place.””
I looked around the ballroom.
“The woman who tried to steal my company chose this place.””
Her mouth opened.
No words came.
I turned toward the security supervisor.
“Bring the original file from my office.””
“Yes, Chairman.””
He walked away.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Dad, please explain.””
I looked at him.
“After your mother died, I made changes to my estate plan.””
He swallowed.
“Because of me?””
“No.””
I paused.
“Because of what happened to your mother.””
The mention of her name changed the atmosphere.
Everyone knew my wife had passed away years ago.
But they didn’t know the full story.
Your mother was not only my wife.
She was my partner.
Before Bennett Hospitality became what it was, there was only a small restaurant we opened together.
She handled customers.
I handled finances.
We built everything from nothing.
Then one night, after we became successful, someone tried to take advantage of us.
A family member.
Someone we trusted.
They almost destroyed everything we created.
That experience taught me something.
Love and trust were not the same thing.
So I created protections.
“I left Ethan everything he needed,” I said.
His eyes softened.
“Dad…”
“But I did not leave him control of everything immediately.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“I created conditions.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“You can’t do that.””
Everyone looked at her.
She realized her mistake.
“You mean… you did?””
I nodded.
“My son would inherit ownership of the company.””
I looked at Ethan.
“But only after proving he understood responsibility.””
Ethan lowered his head.
“What did I have to do?””
“Protect the company. Protect the employees. And never allow greed to control his decisions.””
Silence.
Because everyone knew.
He had failed.
The security supervisor returned carrying a sealed envelope.
“Chairman.””
I opened it.
Inside was the original document.
My attorney’s signature.
My wife’s final letter.
And one additional name.
The ballroom waited.
I handed the letter to Ethan.
“Read it.””
His hands shook as he opened it.
After a few seconds, tears filled his eyes.
“What does it say?”” Vanessa asked nervously.
Ethan looked at her.
“My mother…”
His voice cracked.
“She named someone else.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No.””
I watched her reaction.
She already knew.
She knew exactly what was coming.
Ethan looked at me.
“Who?””
I took a breath.
“The second heir is someone your mother loved like family.””
The doors of the ballroom suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
She was holding a small folder.
She looked nervous.
But determined.
Ethan stared at her.
“Who is that?””
I looked at the woman.
“Her name is Claire Walker.””
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
Because she knew that name.
Ethan noticed.
“You know her?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Claire walked slowly into the room.
“Hello, Ethan.””
He looked confused.
“I don’t understand.””
She looked at me.
Then at him.
“Your father asked me not to come unless the truth came out.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Dad?””
I nodded.
“Claire was your mother’s closest friend.””
Claire opened the folder.
“And I have proof of what Vanessa planned before this wedding.””
Vanessa’s voice rose.
“This is insane!””
Claire looked at her.
“No. What’s insane is thinking nobody would discover what you did.””
The room became tense.
I looked at Claire.
“What did you find?””
She opened the folder.
“Everything.””
She placed photos on the table.
Bank records.
Messages.
Contracts.
Then she placed one final piece of paper down.
A document signed by Vanessa.
The title was clear.
“Transfer Agreement.””
Ethan picked it up.
His hands started shaking.
“What is this?””
Claire answered quietly.
“The document Vanessa planned to make you sign after the wedding.””
Ethan read the page.
Then he looked at his wife.
“You were going to transfer my father’s company to us?””
Vanessa looked desperate.
“Ethan, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice was different.
For the first time, he wasn’t protecting her.
“Tell me the truth.””
She stepped closer.
“I did everything for our future.””
I almost laughed.
People always used that excuse when they wanted something selfish.
“Our future?””
Ethan stared at her.
“You lied about my father being dead.””
Vanessa looked away.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I finally understand.””
Then Claire spoke again.
“There’s one more thing.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“Something Vanessa didn’t know existed.””
My heart tightened.
Because I knew exactly what was inside.
A recording.
One that would reveal whether Ethan was truly a victim…
Or part of the plan.
Claire handed me the envelope.
“Your wife wanted this opened only if something happened to you.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then I opened it.
May you like
And the first sentence I heard from the recording made my blood run cold.
“Richard, if you’re hearing this… it means someone in our family has betrayed you.””
