Chapter 11: The Man Who Stole My Past
Nobody moved.
Thomas’s words hung in the air.
“She’s yours.””
I looked at Claire.
Then at Thomas.
My mind refused to accept it.
“No.””
Thomas smiled.
“Still refusing to believe things you don’t want to hear.””
I stepped closer.
“Don’t play with people’s lives.””
“I’m not.””
He looked around.
“I’m finally telling the truth.””
Ethan stood beside me.
“Who are you?””
Thomas looked at him.
“I’m the man your father spent twenty years pretending didn’t exist.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
Thomas smiled.
“You have your father’s courage.””
I almost laughed.
The man who destroyed my company was complimenting my son.
“You don’t get to talk about my family.””
Thomas looked at Claire.
“Especially not her.””
Claire’s face was filled with confusion.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at her.
“Because your father spent years believing you were someone else’s responsibility.””
I looked at him.
“Explain.””
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a document.
And placed it on the table.
“A DNA test.””
Nobody spoke.
I didn’t want to look.
Because some truths hurt before they are even confirmed.
Claire picked it up.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Richard…”
I couldn’t breathe.
“What does it say?””
She whispered:
“You’re my father.””
The room became silent.
Ethan looked at me.
Then at Claire.
My son was processing everything.
His whole life changing in minutes.
“I have a sister?””
Claire covered her mouth.
“I didn’t know either.””
I looked at Thomas.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
His smile disappeared.
“Since before she was born.””
The anger inside me rose.
“You knew I had a daughter and said nothing?””
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“You took everything from me.””
“What?””
“Emily.””
The old pain returned.
“You think you lost her because of me?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No. You lost her because she chose me.””
His face darkened.
For the first time, I saw the man beneath the confidence.
A man who had spent twenty years trapped in resentment.
“You always had everything.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I built everything.””
Thomas laughed.
“And that’s why I hated you.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
“I watched you become successful. I watched people respect you. I watched Emily love you.””
He looked at Claire.
“And I watched my own daughter grow up without knowing who her father was.””
Claire stepped forward.
“That wasn’t Richard’s choice.””
Thomas looked away.
Because she was right.
For years, he had blamed everyone except himself.
Then Vanessa interrupted.
“Thomas, this isn’t why we’re here.””
I turned.
The way she spoke to him was different.
Not like a partner.
Like an employee.
Interesting.
Thomas noticed my expression.
“You thought she was controlling me?””
I said nothing.
He laughed.
“She’s always been ambitious.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Careful.””
Thomas ignored her.
“She came to me because she needed someone who understood your weaknesses.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And what weakness was that?””
Thomas smiled.
“Your son.””
Ethan looked down.
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
“You knew Ethan was vulnerable,” I said.
“Yes.””
Thomas looked at my son.
“You wanted your father’s approval.””
Ethan clenched his fists.
“Don’t.””
Thomas continued.
“You were angry. Hurt. Easy to influence.””
I looked at Ethan.
He didn’t deny it.
Thomas turned back to me.
“Vanessa handled the emotional part.””
“And you handled the documents.””
“Yes.””
The confession came easily.
Too easily.
I frowned.
“Why admit this?””
Thomas smiled.
“Because you think you won.””
He stepped closer.
“But you haven’t.””
The ballroom doors suddenly opened again.
A group of investigators entered.
The security team moved.
Everyone looked confused.
One investigator approached me.
“Mr. Bennett?””
“Yes?””
He showed me his identification.
“We need to speak with you about Bennett Hospitality.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
He looked at the documents.
“There has been a report of financial misconduct.””
I looked at Thomas.
His smile returned.
Vanessa looked relieved.
Ethan looked terrified.
The investigator continued:
“We have evidence suggesting company funds were illegally transferred.””
My anger turned cold.
Because I understood.
This was the final move.
Thomas didn’t want my company anymore.
He wanted to destroy my name.
The investigator handed me a file.
“Mr. Bennett…”
He hesitated.
“The transactions appear to have your authorization.””
I opened the file.
And saw my signature.
Again.
May you like
But this time…
The signature was real.
