Chapter 5: The Voice From The Past

The sound of my wife’s voice filled the ballroom.

For a moment, I forgot about Vanessa.

I forgot about the guests.

I forgot about the company.

All I could hear was the woman I had loved for nearly four decades.

“Richard…”

Her voice was softer than I remembered.

But it carried the same strength.

“If you’re hearing this, something has gone terribly wrong.””

Ethan covered his mouth.

He had not heard his mother’s voice in years.

Neither had I.

I closed my eyes.

The memory was painful.

But I needed to listen.

“First, I want you to know something. I never believed money was what held our family together.””

A pause.

“People do.””

My wife always had a way of seeing through people.

“They think wealth creates loyalty. It doesn’t.””

The room was silent.

“Money only reveals what was already inside someone’s heart.””

I opened my eyes.

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

Ethan looked broken.

The recording continued.

“Richard, if our son ever forgets where he came from, remind him of the little boy who used to wait by the restaurant door for you to come home.””

Ethan began crying.

I looked away.

Because I remembered that boy.

The child who ran into my arms after every long shift.

The child who promised he would take care of me when I was old.

Then the recording changed.

My wife’s voice became serious.

“But if someone tries to use Ethan’s love for us against him, you must be careful.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She immediately looked down.

“Because manipulation does not always look like cruelty.””

The words landed heavily.

“Sometimes it looks like affection.””

Nobody moved.

My wife continued.

“Richard, I discovered something before I recorded this.””

I leaned closer.

“She has been asking questions about the company.””

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

Ethan looked at her.

“Who?””

My wife answered.

“Vanessa.””

The room erupted in whispers.

Ethan looked like someone had punched him.

“No…”

The recording continued.

“She has been trying to learn about your father’s assets. She has been asking about inheritance rules and company ownership.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“How long?””

She didn’t answer.

“How long did you know about my family?””

Her silence spoke.

Claire stepped forward.

“I found messages from almost two years ago.””

Ethan turned.

“Two years?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with panic.

“Ethan, please.””

“No.””

He backed away.

“You knew my father before we got married?””

She said nothing.

The recording continued.

“Richard, I do not know what Vanessa wants. But I know this: anyone who loves our son should want him to become a better man, not a richer one.””

Those words hurt.

Because Vanessa had done the opposite.

She had convinced Ethan that love meant receiving.

Not giving.

Then came the final part of the recording.

My wife’s voice became emotional.

“And Richard…”

I felt my throat tighten.

“If Ethan makes a mistake, do not punish him forever.””

I looked at my son.

“He is still our child.””

Ethan broke down.

“But make him understand the difference between making a mistake and choosing betrayal.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

For several seconds, the only sound was Ethan crying.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“She was wrong.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She lifted her chin.

“She didn’t know everything.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Her confidence slowly returned.

“You think you understand what happened?””

She laughed quietly.

“You don’t.””

Ethan looked confused.

“Vanessa?””

She ignored him.

“Richard, you built your company. Congratulations.””

She stepped forward.

“But you don’t know what happens behind closed doors.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“What are you saying?””

She smiled.

A different smile.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Confidence.

“I’m saying you should ask your son why he really signed those papers.””

Ethan froze.

“Vanessa, stop.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You wanted your father’s approval so badly.””

His face changed.

“You were angry at him.””

“Don’t.””

“You told me yourself.””

The ballroom went silent.

I looked at Ethan.

“Is that true?””

He couldn’t answer.

Vanessa continued.

“You said your father controlled everything. You said you felt like a child waiting for permission.””

Ethan’s hands shook.

“Vanessa…”

She turned toward me.

“I didn’t force him.””

My heart sank.

Because that was the question I had avoided.

Was my son manipulated?

Or had he simply found someone who encouraged what was already inside him?

Ethan looked at the floor.

“Dad…”

I waited.

Finally, he spoke.

“I was angry.””

The words hurt.

“But I never wanted you gone.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did you sign?””

He closed his eyes.

And his answer changed everything.

“Because Vanessa told me something about you.””

“What?””

He looked up.

“She said you had been planning to replace me.””

The room went quiet.

“Replace you with who?””

Ethan stared at Claire.

And Claire’s expression changed.

Because she already knew.

May you like

Ethan whispered:

“She said you had another child.””
