Chapter 14: The Last Person I Trusted

My attorney’s signature stared back at me.

Daniel Whitmore.

The man who had handled my family’s legal matters for twenty-five years.

The man who helped write my will.

The man who knew every secret inside Bennett Hospitality.

I felt something I hadn’t felt all night.

Not anger.

Betrayal.

A deeper kind.

Because enemies are expected to hurt you.

Friends are not.

“Daniel?””

My voice was barely audible.

Claire looked at me.

“You know him?””

I nodded.

“He was my attorney.””

The investigator took the document.

“We need to locate him immediately.””

But I already knew.

Daniel wasn’t hiding because he was guilty.

He was hiding because he knew exactly what he had done.

Ethan looked at me.

“Dad…”

I looked at him.

“How many people were involved?””

He swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

I looked around the ballroom.

At the empty chairs.

The abandoned decorations.

The wedding that had become an investigation.

“This started as my son’s wedding.””

I looked at the ruined celebration.

“And became the day everyone showed me the truth.””

Claire stepped closer.

“Richard, you need to hear something.””

“What?””

She looked nervous.

“Thomas wasn’t the one who gave Vanessa information about your will.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who was?””

She hesitated.

Then answered:

“Daniel.””

Of course.

The final piece.

The person who knew everything.

The person who could access everything.

The person who could make every lie look real.

The investigator received another message.

He looked at me.

“We found him.””

“Where?””

“At the airport.””

“Is he leaving?””

“Yes.””

I nodded.

“Take me there.””

The investigator looked surprised.

“Mr. Bennett—”

“I need answers.””

Two hours later, I stood inside a private airport terminal.

Daniel Whitmore sat alone near the window.

He looked older.

Tired.

Defeated.

When he saw me, he didn’t run.

That told me everything.

“You knew I would come.””

He sighed.

“Yes.””

I walked closer.

“Why?””

He looked down.

“I was desperate.””

“Everyone says that.””

His eyes filled with shame.

“My wife was sick.””

I stopped.

“My medical bills were overwhelming.””

I looked at him.

“And Thomas?””

“He found out.””

Daniel looked away.

“He offered help.””

I laughed quietly.

“So you sold my family for money.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I made one mistake.””

“One?””

He looked at me.

“I gave him information.””

“And then?””

“He wanted more.””

I listened.

“By the time I realized what he planned, it was too late.””

“Too late?””

“Yes.””

He shook his head.

“Thomas controlled everything.””

I studied him.

“Then why didn’t you come to me?””

His silence answered.

Because he was afraid.

Fear had destroyed more relationships than hatred ever could.

“What did you tell Vanessa?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“About the inheritance.””

“What else?””

“About Claire.””

The words hurt.

“She knew because of you.””

“Yes.””

I stood there.

Twenty-five years of trust.

Gone.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“Do you know what hurts the most?””

He lowered his head.

“It isn’t the money.””

I continued.

“It’s knowing everyone believed I was easier to destroy than to talk to.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

I nodded.

“I believe you are.””

The investigator stepped forward.

“Mr. Whitmore, you’ll need to come with us.””

Daniel stood.

Before leaving, he looked at me.

“There’s something you should know.””

I turned.

“What?””

“Thomas wasn’t the one who chose Ethan.””

My heart tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Vanessa approached him first.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She found Thomas.””

The pieces shifted.

“She knew about him before she met Ethan.””

Daniel nodded.

“She searched for someone who hated you.””

I felt cold.

“So Ethan wasn’t the target.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“He was the doorway.””

The words hit hard.

My son wasn’t the reason.

He was the way in.

When I returned home that night, I found Ethan sitting outside my house.

Alone.

The same place where he used to wait for me after school.

He looked up.

“I didn’t know where else to go.””

I sat beside him.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered:

“Do you hate me?””

I looked at my son.

The answer was complicated.

“No.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“But I don’t know how to trust you again.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

Then he handed me something.

A small wooden box.

My breath stopped.

It was the same box I brought to his wedding.

“The ring.””

I opened it.

Inside was my wife’s wedding ring.

“I found it after you left.””

Ethan looked at me.

“I should have protected it.””

I held the box tightly.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“Dad…”

“What?””

“I found something else inside Vanessa’s files.””

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“A document she was hiding.””

“What kind of document?””

He swallowed.

“A document about your company.””

I waited.

“It says Bennett Hospitality was never supposed to belong to Ethan.””

I frowned.

“Then who?””

He handed me the paper.

I read the first line.

And my hands began to shake.

Because the person named as the true owner…

May you like

was someone I had buried twenty years ago.

My late wife.
