Chapter 13: The Truth Behind My Son’s Choice

The video ended.

But the image remained.

Ethan standing in my office.

Opening my safe.

Taking documents that belonged to me.

The entire ballroom watched him.

And for the first time that night, nobody knew what to say.

My son looked at me.

His face was pale.

“Dad…”

I raised my hand.

Not because I was angry.

Because I needed a moment.

A moment to understand how the boy I raised had become the man standing in front of me.

“Tell me.””

My voice was quiet.

“What happened that night?””

Ethan looked down.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Ethan, don’t say anything.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

The word was firm.

“This time, he speaks.””

Ethan swallowed.

“I went to your office.””

“I can see that.””

“I took the documents.””

The room filled with whispers.

My heart tightened.

“But I didn’t steal them.””

I looked at him.

“Then why?””

He closed his eyes.

“Because I wanted answers.””

That surprised me.

“Answers?””

He nodded.

“I found out Vanessa had been lying.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“What?””

Ethan looked at her.

“I knew something was wrong.””

The room became silent.

“I found messages between you and Thomas.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“You went through my phone?””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You left it unlocked.””

He looked at me.

“I saw everything.””

The truth was finally coming out.

Not from Vanessa.

Not from Thomas.

From my son.

“She was planning everything,” Ethan continued.

“She knew about the company. She knew about Claire. She knew about the inheritance.””

He looked ashamed.

“But by then, I had already signed documents.””

I studied him.

“Then why didn’t you come to me?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was embarrassed.””

The answer hurt.

“Embarrassed?””

“I thought you would see me as a failure.””

I stared at him.

“Ethan…”

“I spent my entire life trying to prove I deserved your name.””

His voice broke.

“And the moment I thought you didn’t believe in me, I looked for someone else who did.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“She made me feel important.””

Ethan continued.

“She told me I was finally going to become the man you never thought I could be.””

I shook my head.

“That was never true.””

“I know that now.””

The investigator stepped forward.

“Mr. Bennett, what about the documents?””

Ethan answered.

“I took them because I wanted proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Vanessa was planning to betray me.””

The room froze.

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“Not everything.””

He looked at Thomas.

“But enough.””

Thomas laughed.

“So now you’re the hero?””

Ethan turned toward him.

“No.””

His voice was stronger.

“I’m the person who made a terrible mistake.””

That was the first honest thing he had said all night.

Thomas stepped forward.

“You still signed the documents.””

“Yes.””

“You still helped us.””

Ethan looked down.

“Yes.””

No excuses.

No lies.

Just acceptance.

Then he looked at me.

“And I’m sorry.””

The words were simple.

But they carried weight.

I wanted to forgive him.

A father always wants to forgive his child.

But forgiveness did not mean pretending nothing happened.

Before I could answer, Claire stepped forward.

“Richard.””

I looked at her.

She held another document.

“What is it?””

She looked at Thomas.

“This was found inside the folder Ethan took.””

Thomas’s face changed.

“What?””

Claire opened it.

“It’s a contract.””

She looked at me.

“A contract between Thomas and Vanessa.””

Vanessa immediately moved.

“Give me that.””

The security team blocked her.

Claire continued reading.

“The agreement states that once Bennett Hospitality was transferred, ownership would be divided.””

She looked at Thomas.

“Seventy percent to you.””

Then she looked at Vanessa.

“Thirty percent to her.””

Thomas’s expression darkened.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You told me we were partners.””

Thomas laughed.

“You were never my partner.””

The realization hit her.

Hard.

“You used me.””

Thomas smiled.

“You used everyone.””

For the first time, Vanessa understood.

She had not been the mastermind.

She had only been another piece on the board.

I looked at Thomas.

“You never wanted the company.””

“No.””

“Then what did you want?””

His eyes moved toward me.

“I wanted you to lose everything.””

The honesty was chilling.

“Your company. Your reputation. Your family.””

He smiled.

“Especially your family.””

The investigator stepped forward.

“Thomas Reed, you are being detained for questioning regarding financial fraud, document forgery, and conspiracy.””

Thomas didn’t resist.

But before he was taken away, he looked at me.

“This isn’t over.””

I stared back.

“Yes, it is.””

He smiled.

“No, Richard.””

He looked at Ethan.

“You still have one more betrayal to discover.””

Then he walked away.

The ballroom doors closed behind him.

But his final words stayed.

One more betrayal.

I looked at Ethan.

“What did he mean?””

Ethan looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

Then Claire suddenly picked up the contract.

Her face changed.

“Richard…”

“What?””

She pointed at the bottom.

“There’s another signature.””

I looked down.

My blood went cold.

Because beneath Thomas and Vanessa’s names…

was a third signature.

A signature from someone who had been helping them from the beginning.

Someone I never suspected.

My own attorney.
