Chapter 1: The Bill That Changed Everything

"Sweetheart, here's the bill. You know what to do.""

Daniel Mitchell slid the leather folder across the table with the casual confidence of a man handing his wife a grocery receipt.

Twenty-two people watched me.

His mother, his sister Vanessa, two brothers, several cousins, and enough extended relatives to fill an entire private dining room at one of Nashville's most expensive steakhouses.

The total was $4,800.

I looked at the number, then at my husband.

"Are you serious, Daniel?""

He leaned back in his chair and smiled.

"Come on, Sarah. It's Dad's seventieth birthday. Don't make this awkward.""

Across the table, his sister Vanessa lifted her champagne glass.

"Honestly, Sarah, you should be happy to do something nice for the family. Daniel told us you were covering everything.""

That was when I realized something.

They hadn't simply assumed I would pay.

They had been promised that I would.

Robert Mitchell, my father-in-law, sat at the head of the table. He was a quiet man who rarely interrupted anyone. At seventy, his silver hair was neatly combed, and his dark blue suit looked as though it had been tailored specifically for the occasion.

He glanced at me.

"Sarah, you don't have to pay for my birthday if it's too much.""

Daniel immediately laughed.

"Dad, don't worry. Sarah loves taking care of things.""

I slowly folded my napkin.

For six years, I'd heard variations of that sentence.

When Daniel's younger brother needed $3,000 to repair his truck, I paid.

When Vanessa fell behind on rent, I transferred the money.

When his mother wanted a vacation in Florida, I booked the hotel.

When Daniel decided his family needed a new dining room set, somehow my credit card was the one that came out.

Every time I questioned it, Daniel reminded me that marriage meant sharing.

But strangely, sharing only seemed to work in one direction.

Three days earlier, I'd overheard Daniel on the phone in our kitchen.

"Don't worry about the dinner," he'd told someone.

"Sarah will handle it. She doesn't know how to say no to me.""

I had stood in the hallway holding a cup of coffee.

Then he'd added something that made my stomach turn.

"Once the money comes through, Vanessa and I can finally close on the property.""

I hadn't confronted him.

Instead, I'd made a few phone calls of my own.

Now, sitting in that restaurant, I knew exactly what I was going to do.

Before dinner, I'd quietly spoken to the waiter.

"Please separate the checks by household. I'll cover my own meal and my father-in-law's birthday dinner.""

The waiter had nodded without asking questions.

Now Daniel was waiting for me to open the folder.

I didn't.

"Sarah?"" he said.

"Yes?""

"Pay the bill.""

I took a sip of water.

"No.""

His smile disappeared.

"What?""

"I said no.""

Vanessa placed her champagne glass down so hard that a little wine spilled onto the white tablecloth.

"Excuse me?""

I looked at her.

"You heard me.""

Daniel leaned toward me.

"Don't start this tonight.""

"I didn't start anything. You invited twenty-two people and told them I'd pay without asking me.""

His mother, Patricia, frowned.

"Daniel said this was your idea.""

"Well, Daniel says a lot of things.""

The waiter appeared beside our table carrying several leather folders.

"Good evening, everyone. I've prepared the individual checks as requested.""

Daniel laughed nervously.

"That's unnecessary. My wife is taking care of it.""

The waiter smiled politely.

"Your wife has already paid her portion, sir.""

Then he placed the first bill in front of Daniel.

The second went to Vanessa.

The third went to Daniel's brother Michael.

Within seconds, the table erupted.

"Six hundred and forty dollars?"" Vanessa shouted.

"Are you kidding me?""

Michael stared at his check.

"Who ordered two bottles of that champagne?""

His wife pointed at him.

"You did!""

"Because Daniel said everything was covered!""

Vanessa turned toward me.

"We wouldn't have ordered this much if we'd known we had to pay!""

I held her gaze.

"Then why did you order it?""

Silence.

Daniel grabbed my wrist beneath the table.

"Sarah, you're embarrassing me.""

I pulled my hand away.

"No, Daniel. I'm simply refusing to embarrass my bank account.""

His face turned red.

"Pay the bill. Now.""

"Make me.""

A chair scraped against the floor.

Robert slowly removed his glasses.

"Daniel. Sit down.""

Something in his voice made everyone stop talking.

Daniel turned.

"Dad, please don't get involved.""

Robert reached inside his jacket and removed a folded document.

"I'm afraid I have to.""

He placed it beside the untouched birthday cake.

Daniel's expression changed.

Robert looked directly at his son.

"Before anyone leaves this table, I want you to explain why you asked me to witness an $85,000 transfer from Sarah's personal savings account.""

My stomach dropped.

"What transfer?""

Robert unfolded the document.

My full name appeared at the top.

Daniel's signature appeared at the bottom.

I stared at my husband.

"Daniel, what is this?""

He immediately reached across the table.

"Dad, give me that!""

Robert pulled the document away.

"You asked me to sign it, remember?""

Daniel stood abruptly.

"That's private!""

Robert's voice became colder.

"Private? You wanted me to help you take your wife's money.""

I looked down again.

The authorization request was dated two weeks earlier.

Then I noticed something else.

The beneficiary wasn't Daniel.

It was Vanessa Mitchell.

I slowly raised my eyes.

"Why is your sister receiving eighty-five thousand dollars from my savings?""

Vanessa stopped moving.

Daniel opened his mouth.

May you like

But before he could answer, Robert reached for another envelope.

"And that's not even the worst part.""
