Chapter 11: The Man Who Knew My Mother's Secret
I didn't sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph of my mother holding me beside a man I had never known.
I also heard Daniel's final words.
The trust was never supposed to belong to me.
By eight the following morning, Rebecca had already arranged a meeting with Margaret and requested the original trust documents.
"You're not going to the Franklin property alone," she told me.
"I wasn't planning to.""
"Good. Daniel may be trying to lure you into signing something.""
Robert offered to accompany us.
I accepted.
At eleven, we arrived at the Franklin property.
The house was larger than I'd imagined. White columns framed the entrance, and a wide driveway curved around a fountain.
Daniel stood on the front porch.
Vanessa was beside him.
Neither looked surprised to see us.
Daniel glanced at Rebecca.
"I specifically asked Sarah to come alone.""
"And she specifically chose not to," Rebecca replied.
He smiled coldly.
"Of course. Another lawyer.""
I stepped forward.
"You said you had something from my mother.""
Daniel nodded and opened the front door.
Inside, the house smelled of fresh paint and expensive furniture polish.
There were boxes stacked along one wall.
A champagne bottle sat unopened on the kitchen counter.
"Why are there boxes?"" I asked.
Daniel shrugged.
"Lauren was planning to move in.""
I looked around.
"So this was supposed to be your new home with her?""
"Sarah, that's not important.""
"It was important enough to spend my money.""
He ignored the comment and led us into the study.
On the desk lay a brown envelope.
He pushed it toward me.
"Read it.""
Rebecca picked it up first.
"May I?""
Daniel reluctantly nodded.
She removed a document and began reading.
It was a copy of a letter dated four years earlier.
The letter was addressed to my mother.
The sender was Thomas Whitaker.
It discussed the inheritance trust and mentioned an additional provision involving a future distribution.
I scanned the page.
Then I saw a paragraph marked in bold.
Should Sarah choose to marry before reaching thirty-five, the trustee must ensure that her spouse receives no authority over the trust. If the spouse attempts to obtain control through fraud, coercion, or misrepresentation, the trust shall remain entirely protected under the original terms.
I looked at Daniel.
"This proves exactly what Mom wanted.""
He shook his head.
Rebecca continued.
The final paragraph stated that Thomas had reserved the right to appoint an additional trustee if circumstances warranted.
But there was no indication that Daniel or Vanessa could ever receive the money.
Daniel pointed to the signature.
"That's not the original.""
Rebecca looked up.
"Correct. It's a photocopy.""
"Your mother signed another document afterward.""
"What document?"" I asked.
Daniel opened a drawer and removed another envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The paper was yellowed around the edges.
My mother's handwriting was unmistakable.
I read it slowly.
Sarah, if you're reading this, then someone has probably discovered the trust. I want you to remember that money was never the reason I made these arrangements. I wanted you to have the freedom to leave anyone who made you feel small, trapped, or afraid.
My eyes filled with tears.
The letter continued.
There is one person I trusted to protect you if I could no longer do it myself. His name is Thomas Whitaker. He knows the complete history of our family.
I looked up.
"Why do you have this?""
Daniel leaned against the desk.
"Because I found it in your mother's old storage box.""
Rebecca took the letter.
"Did you remove it from Sarah's property?""
Daniel shrugged.
"It was in a box I was helping her organize.""
I stared at him.
"You went through my mother's belongings without telling me?""
"Don't turn everything into an accusation.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Daniel, you forged my signature on documents. Accusations are the least of your problems.""
Vanessa finally spoke.
"Can we please stop fighting?""
I turned toward her.
"Why are you here?""
She looked uncomfortable.
"Daniel said he wanted to settle things.""
"With my inheritance?""
She shook her head.
"With everything.""
Rebecca placed the letter back inside the envelope.
"Mr. Mitchell, if this is all you have, we're finished here.""
Daniel suddenly opened another drawer.
"Not yet.""
He removed a photograph.
This one showed my mother standing outside a hospital.
Beside her was the same man from the first photograph.
Thomas Whitaker.
On the back, someone had written:
The day Sarah's future was secured.
I looked at Daniel.
"What are you trying to prove?""
He smiled.
"That your mother wasn't the innocent woman you think she was.""
Robert stepped forward.
"Careful, Daniel.""
But Daniel continued.
"She hid things. She lied. And she made decisions that affected everyone.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Whatever happened before I was born has nothing to do with what you did to me.""
He stared at me.
"Actually, it does.""
Then he pulled out a document with a red seal.
Rebecca's expression changed as soon as she saw it.
"Where did you get that?""
Daniel held it up.
"From Thomas's old estate files.""
Rebecca took a step closer.
"That document should not be in your possession.""
Daniel smiled.
"Maybe you should read it.""
Rebecca examined the first page.
Then her face became completely serious.
She looked at me.
"Sarah, this appears to be a formal amendment to the trust.""
My heart began pounding.
"What does it say?""
She read the first paragraph.
Then stopped.
The document appeared to transfer authority over the trust to a second trustee.
But the signature at the bottom was not Thomas's.
It was my mother's.
And beside it was another signature.
One I recognized immediately.
Daniel Mitchell.
I stared at my husband.
"You signed a document with my mother?""
He nodded.
"She trusted me.""
Rebecca carefully placed the paper on the desk.
"Mr. Mitchell, this document needs independent verification. The date and notarization details are highly questionable.""
Daniel laughed.
"Of course you'd say that.""
Then he leaned toward me.
"Sarah, there's something else. Thomas isn't dead.""
My breath caught.
"What?""
May you like
Daniel smiled.
"He's alive. And he's been waiting to meet you.""
