Chapter 10: The Photograph My Mother Never Explained
I stared at the photograph on Robert's phone.
My mother looked younger, perhaps thirty-five. She wore a cream-colored blouse and stood beside a tall man with dark hair. Between them, the man held a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.
Me.
I recognized the tiny birthmark near my left temple.
But I had never seen the man before.
"Who is he?"" I whispered.
Robert enlarged the photograph.
"I don't know.""
Rebecca took the phone and examined the image.
"Does anyone recognize him?""
Margaret was still on speakerphone.
When she heard our question, she became unusually quiet.
"Sarah, describe the man.""
I looked closely.
"Dark hair. Maybe forty. A small scar above his right eyebrow. He's wearing a wedding ring.""
There was a long pause.
Then Margaret said something that made my blood run cold.
"His name is Thomas Whitaker.""
"Who is Thomas Whitaker?""
"He was your mother's first attorney. He also helped establish the original inheritance trust.""
Rebecca frowned.
"Why would Daniel have this photograph?""
"I don't know," Margaret replied.
"But Thomas was never your mother's husband. He was a close family friend.""
I studied the picture again.
"Did he know me when I was a baby?""
"Yes. He was there during the first year of your life.""
I looked at Rebecca.
"Why would Daniel suggest my mother wasn't honest about the money?""
Rebecca shook her head.
"Because he wants us distracted from his own actions. We need evidence before drawing conclusions.""
Robert opened Daniel's email again.
There was another attachment.
A scanned document titled:
*Original Trust Funding Declaration.*
The first paragraph stated that the money used to establish the trust came from the estate of a deceased man named Thomas Whitaker.
I looked up.
"Wait. Thomas Whitaker funded my mother's trust?""
Margaret answered immediately.
"Yes. Thomas was your biological father's older brother.""
I stopped breathing.
"My biological father's brother?""
"Your mother never wanted you to feel that you were different from other children. She raised you as her daughter, and she loved you completely.""
I struggled to process the words.
"My father wasn't the man who raised me?""
"No, sweetheart. Your mother was married before she met the man you grew up knowing. Your biological father died when you were very young.""
I closed my eyes.
My mother had never mentioned another marriage.
Not once.
Margaret continued.
"Thomas inherited a substantial estate after his brother's death. He established a trust for you because he wanted to ensure you would always be protected.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The man holding me had been my uncle.
"Why didn't Mom tell me?""
"She wanted to explain when you were older. But after your father died, she decided that keeping your life stable was more important than introducing another complicated family history.""
I wiped my cheeks.
Rebecca gently touched my arm.
"Sarah, this doesn't change your legal rights. The trust belongs to you under its original terms.""
I nodded.
But Daniel's email had raised another question.
How had he discovered the trust?
I opened the message again.
At the bottom was a sentence:
If Sarah investigates Thomas Whitaker's estate, she'll discover that the money was never supposed to be hers alone.
Rebecca immediately leaned forward.
"That statement is misleading.""
"How do you know?""
"Because the trust agreement clearly names you as the sole beneficiary. We need the original estate records, but nothing in this email changes the existing ownership.""
Robert shook his head.
"My son is using your mother's past to justify his theft.""
Then Margaret spoke again.
"Sarah, there's something I haven't told you.""
I turned toward the phone.
"What?""
"Thomas left another document with me. It was sealed and addressed specifically to you.""
"What does it say?""
"I haven't opened it. He instructed me to give it to you when you turned thirty-five.""
I frowned.
"My birthday is next month.""
"Exactly.""
Rebecca exchanged a look with Robert.
"Can you bring it to our office?""
"Yes. But there's something else. Thomas requested that the document be delivered in person, with an independent witness.""
"Why?""
Margaret hesitated.
"Because he believed someone in the family might eventually try to challenge your inheritance.""
I looked at Daniel's email.
He had known about Thomas.
He had known about the trust.
And he had tried to transfer it to Vanessa.
Suddenly, the entire scheme looked even more deliberate.
Rebecca picked up her phone.
"Sarah, I want you to understand something. We have evidence of attempted unauthorized transfers, suspicious credit applications, and potentially forged property documents. We're going to preserve everything.""
I nodded.
Then Robert's phone rang.
Daniel.
Robert answered and put him on speaker.
"What do you want?""
Daniel sounded unusually calm.
"I want Sarah to stop listening to people who don't understand our family.""
Robert laughed without humor.
"You had your chance to explain.""
"Tell her the trust isn't what she thinks it is.""
I leaned toward the phone.
"Daniel, how did you find out about Thomas Whitaker?""
Silence.
Then he answered.
"Because your mother told me.""
"When?""
"Before she died.""
My stomach tightened.
"What exactly did she tell you?""
Daniel exhaled.
"She told me there was another inheritance. She also told me there was a condition that could change everything.""
Rebecca immediately motioned for me to stay quiet.
Daniel continued.
"Sarah, if you want the truth, come to the Franklin property tomorrow. Alone.""
"Why?""
"Because I have the original document your mother signed.""
May you like
Then he added something that made Robert drop his phone onto the table.
"And it proves that the trust was never supposed to belong to you.""
