Chapter 6: The Secret Account

"Three hundred thousand dollars?""

I stared at the document.

Robert nodded.

"That's the amount Daniel promised Lauren.""

The restaurant had become so quiet that I could hear ice shifting inside someone's glass.

Daniel stood near the entrance with his phone pressed against his ear.

"Lauren, listen to me. I told you the transaction was delayed.""

Her voice came through again.

"Delayed? You said we would close on Monday! I already gave notice at my apartment!""

Daniel glanced toward me.

"Not now.""

Lauren laughed bitterly.

"You told me Sarah was practically out of the picture. You said the divorce was already being handled!""

My breath caught.

Divorce?

I slowly turned toward Daniel.

"What's she talking about?""

He ended the call.

For several seconds, he simply stood there.

Then he walked back to the table.

"Sarah, don't believe everything Lauren says.""

I felt a strange calm settle over me.

"Are you planning to divorce me?""

"No.""

"Did you tell Lauren you were?""

He looked at Robert.

His father shook his head.

"Answer your wife.""

Daniel pulled out a chair.

"I told her we were having problems.""

"That's not what she said.""

"Sarah, I was trying to keep everyone happy.""

I stared at him.

"Everyone except me.""

He lowered his head.

Robert opened the document.

"There's another account.""

I looked at him.

"What account?""

"An account Daniel opened under a business name. The bank records indicate that some of the money from your savings was transferred there before being distributed.""

He showed me the first page.

The account belonged to a company called Mitchell Property Solutions LLC.

Its registered owner was Vanessa.

But the authorized user was Daniel.

I scanned the transaction history.

There were deposits from our household account, payments from the business credit line, and several transfers connected to the property in Franklin.

Then I saw something unfamiliar.

A recurring payment of $4,750 every month.

For eleven months.

I pointed at it.

"What's this?""

Robert looked at the description.

"Mortgage payments.""

"On which property?""

He turned the page.

The address was in Brentwood.

I recognized it from the photograph.

The house where Daniel had been standing with Lauren.

I looked at Vanessa.

"You told me you were struggling to pay rent.""

She lowered her head.

"I was.""

"Yet you owned a property worth hundreds of thousands of dollars?""

"It wasn't mine. Daniel handled everything.""

"Your name is on the deed!""

She began crying again.

I leaned back.

For six years, I'd believed Vanessa was financially helpless.

I'd paid her rent twice.

I'd covered her car insurance.

I'd even given her money for groceries when she claimed her hours had been cut.

And all that time, she had been helping my husband hide property.

Daniel approached me.

"Sarah, I know this looks terrible.""

I looked up.

"Looks terrible?""

"I made mistakes.""

"Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary. This is a business operation built around stealing from your wife.""

His expression hardened.

"Don't exaggerate.""

Robert stood.

"That's enough.""

He reached into his folder and handed me a business card.

"This is Attorney Rebecca Lawson. I spoke with her yesterday. She specializes in property fraud and financial misconduct.""

I took the card.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?""

Robert looked genuinely ashamed.

"Because I wanted to be certain before I accused my own son. I should have contacted you the moment I found the first document.""

I nodded.

It was the first apology I'd heard that evening that didn't come with an excuse.

Patricia stood beside him.

"Sarah, I'm so sorry.""

I looked at her.

She was crying now, but I couldn't tell whether it was because she finally understood what Daniel had done or because her son had been exposed.

"I appreciate that," I said quietly.

Daniel shook his head.

"This is ridiculous. Everyone is treating me like a criminal.""

Robert looked at him.

"Then stop behaving like one.""

Daniel turned toward me.

"Sarah, let's go home. We can discuss this privately.""

I looked at him for a long moment.

Home.

The word felt unfamiliar.

I had spent years making that house comfortable for him. I had cooked his favorite meals, paid the bills, and defended him whenever his family complained about his decisions.

Now I wondered whether he'd ever loved me or simply loved having someone who trusted him enough not to ask questions.

"I'm not going anywhere with you.""

He stepped closer.

"You're my wife.""

"And you're no longer someone I trust.""

He lowered his voice.

"Don't make a decision you'll regret.""

I picked up my handbag.

"The only decision I regret is marrying you without checking your character first.""

Michael quietly stood and moved aside to let me pass.

Then Robert called my name.

"Sarah, wait.""

He handed me a sealed envelope.

"I found this in Daniel's office when I went to collect the property documents.""

I frowned.

"What's inside?""

"I don't know. I didn't open it. Your name was written on the front.""

I looked down.

My name was written in Daniel's handwriting.

Beneath it were four words.

*For Sarah, if discovered.*

My fingers trembled as I opened the envelope.

Inside was a printed email dated two months earlier.

The sender was Daniel.

The recipient was someone named Lauren.

I read the first paragraph.

Once the house is transferred and the funds are released, I'll be able to leave Sarah without losing anything. The marriage has served its purpose.

I stopped breathing.

I read the sentence again.

The marriage had served its purpose.

Below it was another paragraph.

Vanessa will keep the properties temporarily. Dad won't interfere once he sees the financial agreement. Sarah will never know how much we moved.

Then came the final line.

There's only one problem. She still owns the house her mother left her.

I lowered the paper.

Daniel was staring at me from across the room.

His face had gone completely pale.

"Where did you get that?""

I folded the email carefully.

"From your father.""

"That's private.""

I looked at him.

"Apparently, so was our marriage.""

Then I noticed something at the bottom of the email.

An attachment.

Its title was:

*Sarah Mitchell — Marriage and Inheritance Agreement.*

I opened it.

The document contained my name, Daniel's name, and a date from six years earlier.

It also contained a clause I'd never seen before.

A clause stating that Daniel would receive a substantial portion of my inherited assets if our marriage ended after five years.

I looked at Robert.

"Did you know about this?""

He shook his head.

Then he looked at his son.

"Daniel, what exactly did you have Sarah sign when you got married?""

Daniel didn't answer.

But Vanessa suddenly whispered:

"She didn't sign the real agreement.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel lunged for the envelope.

Robert caught his arm.

And in that moment, I realized the next secret might be even worse than the money.

May you like

Because someone had apparently created a marriage agreement in my name.

And I had never seen it before.
