Chapter 7: The Agreement I Never Signed

"She didn't sign the real agreement.""

Vanessa's words hung in the air.

I looked at her, then at Daniel, who was still struggling against his father's grip.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa wiped her nose with the back of her hand.

"Sarah, please. I didn't want things to go this far.""

I held up the document.

"Then start talking.""

Daniel pulled his arm free.

"Vanessa, don't you dare.""

She flinched.

For the first time that evening, I noticed something unusual about my sister-in-law. She wasn't just afraid of being exposed.

She was afraid of Daniel.

Robert moved between them.

"Vanessa, you have one chance to tell the truth.""

She sat down slowly.

"Six years ago, before the wedding, Daniel asked me to help organize some paperwork. He said you needed to sign a standard financial agreement because his business had outstanding debts.""

I frowned.

"I remember signing something at the rehearsal dinner. Daniel said it was an insurance document.""

Vanessa nodded.

"That was the real agreement. It protected your inheritance. It stated that anything your mother left you would remain yours, regardless of what happened in the marriage.""

I stared at her.

"Then what's this document?""

Vanessa pointed to the email.

"Daniel created another version two months ago. He wanted to use it to claim a portion of your inheritance if you divorced him.""

My stomach tightened.

"How could he do that?""

"He couldn't," she whispered.

"Not without your signature.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"She's lying. She's trying to save herself.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"You told me you had a copy of Sarah's signature!""

"Shut up!""

Robert's face darkened.

"Daniel, did you forge your wife's signature on a financial agreement?""

Daniel paced beside the table.

"I was protecting my investments!""

"By stealing from your wife?""

"You don't understand!""

Robert stepped closer.

"Then help us understand.""

Daniel suddenly pointed at me.

"Sarah, you have no idea how difficult it was being married to you.""

I stared at him.

"Excuse me?""

"You always had money. Your mother left you that house. You had savings. You never had to worry about anything.""

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.

"Are you serious? I worked two jobs when we first married. I paid off my student loans.

I saved every paycheck. My mother left me one house, not a fortune.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You always made me feel like I was living under your shadow.""

"So you decided to steal my future?""

He looked away.

That was his answer.

Robert reached for the agreement.

"Who prepared this document?""

Daniel didn't respond.

Vanessa finally spoke.

"Lauren.""

I turned toward her.

"Lauren prepared it?""

"She's a paralegal. She said she could make the agreement look legitimate.""

Robert's eyes narrowed.

"Was an attorney involved?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. Daniel told us he had someone who could handle the paperwork.""

I looked at the document again.

There was a notary stamp near the bottom.

The notary's name was unfamiliar.

"Who notarized this?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Lauren's cousin.""

I closed my eyes briefly.

It was almost impressive how many people Daniel had recruited into this mess.

Almost.

I called the number on the business card Robert had given me.

Rebecca Lawson answered on the second ring.

"Rebecca Lawson speaking.""

"My name is Sarah Mitchell. Robert Mitchell gave me your number. I think my husband forged my signature on a financial agreement and attempted to transfer property I inherited from my mother.""

Her voice immediately became serious.

"Are you somewhere safe?""

"I'm at a restaurant with his family.""

"Do not sign anything. Do not agree to any transfer. Preserve every message and document. Can you send me photographs of what you've found?""

"Yes.""

"Good. I'll arrange an urgent consultation first thing tomorrow.""

Daniel heard every word.

He stepped toward me.

"You're calling a lawyer?""

I looked at him.

"Yes.""

"You're going to destroy our family over paperwork?""

I almost dropped the phone.

"Our family?""

I glanced at Vanessa, then at Patricia, then at Robert.

"You destroyed our marriage when you decided my signature was something you could manufacture.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"You're making a mistake.""

Rebecca's voice came through the phone.

"Mrs. Mitchell, are you still there?""

"Yes.""

"One more thing. Ask your father-in-law whether he has the original financial agreement from your wedding.""

I looked at Robert.

"Do you?""

He nodded slowly.

"I have the original in my safe.""

Rebecca continued.

"Bring it tomorrow. If that agreement contains the protection Vanessa described, it may be extremely important.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

For the first time that night, I felt something other than fear.

I felt prepared.

Then Robert spoke.

"Sarah, there's something else you should know about that original agreement.""

I turned toward him.

"What?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"When Daniel first asked me to help with his financial problems, I discovered a clause in the original document that I hadn't noticed before.""

"What clause?""

Robert hesitated.

"It wasn't written by Daniel.""

He glanced at his son.

"It was written by your mother.""

My breath caught.

"My mother?""

Robert nodded.

"She insisted on one additional protection before the wedding.""

I stared at him.

"What protection?""

May you like

Robert looked at Daniel.

"One that makes everything your husband has attempted much more serious.""
