Chapter 8: The Woman Behind The Plan

The woman standing at the ballroom entrance looked terrified.

Her hands were shaking.

The folder she carried almost slipped from her fingers.

“Rachel?””

My voice echoed through the ballroom.

My former assistant lowered her head.

“Yes, Mr. Bennett.””

I stared at her.

For eight years, Rachel had worked beside me.

She knew my schedule.

My passwords.

My private meetings.

She had access to information almost nobody else had.

“Why are you here?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“To tell the truth.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Rachel flinched.

Interesting.

Fear.

Not anger.

Vanessa wasn’t surprised Rachel was there.

She was afraid of what Rachel knew.

“Rachel,” I said.

“Tell me everything.””

She walked slowly into the room.

“I made a mistake.””

“What kind of mistake?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The kind that hurt innocent people.””

Ethan looked confused.

“You helped her?””

Rachel looked at him.

“I thought I was helping you.””

That sentence made everyone freeze.

Ethan stepped back.

“What?””

Rachel opened the folder.

“Vanessa told me she was protecting you.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Protecting him from what?””

Rachel answered.

“She said you were planning to take everything away from Ethan.””

Ethan’s face changed.

The same lie.

Again.

Vanessa had been feeding him the same story to everyone.

“She said your father didn’t trust you,” Rachel continued.

“She said he planned to replace you with Claire.””

Claire shook her head.

“But you believed her?””

Rachel looked ashamed.

“She showed me documents.””

“Fake documents.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the papers.

“So you helped create them.””

Rachel nodded.

“I changed some company records.””

The room became colder.

“Why?””

She looked at Ethan.

“Because she told me Ethan deserved his chance.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“She convinced you stealing from me was giving him a chance?””

Rachel cried.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds exactly like what it was.””

She lowered her head.

“I was wrong.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

“Stop pretending you’re innocent!””

Everyone turned.

Rachel looked at her.

“You threatened me.””

The ballroom went silent.

“What?”” Ethan asked.

Rachel opened another file.

“She threatened to expose my brother’s debt.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Rachel continued.

“She said if I didn’t help her access the company records, she would report him.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“So you blackmailed her.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I wouldn’t call it that.””

“Of course you wouldn’t.””

I looked at her.

“People like you always find softer words for ugly actions.””

Ethan stood silently.

He looked destroyed.

Not only because of what Vanessa did.

But because he finally saw the pattern.

Everyone who supported her had been controlled.

Manipulated.

Used.

Everyone except him.

Because he chose to believe her.

The security supervisor stepped forward.

“Chairman, we also recovered deleted messages.””

“From?””

“Vanessa’s phone.””

Vanessa immediately reached for it.

“No.””

The supervisor stepped back.

The message appeared on the screen.

Everyone could see it.

The first message was from Vanessa to Daniel Hayes.

The old man will be gone soon. Make sure the transfer documents are ready.

Another message followed.

Ethan is emotional. He will sign anything if he thinks his father abandoned him.

Ethan read the words.

His face collapsed.

I watched my son absorb the truth.

Not rumors.

Not accusations.

Proof.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Ethan, listen to me.””

He slowly turned.

“How long?””

She said nothing.

“How long did you know my father wasn’t dead?””

The question hit harder than any accusation.

Vanessa looked away.

Ethan’s voice broke.

“Answer me.””

“Three weeks.””

The room gasped.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Three weeks.

She had spent three weeks planning a wedding while pretending his father was gone.

Three weeks of lies.

Three weeks of manipulation.

I walked toward Ethan.

“Why didn’t you call me?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because I was angry.””

The honesty hurt.

“But I was going to.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

That was the truth.

Then Rachel suddenly spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She pulled out another document.

“This was the original plan.””

I took it.

The title immediately caught my attention.

“Post-Wedding Acquisition Strategy.””

I read the first page.

My hands tightened.

Because it wasn’t just about removing me.

It wasn’t even just about taking the company.

The final step was something far more dangerous.

Vanessa planned to make Ethan the public face of the takeover.

She wanted everyone to believe my own son had inherited everything legally.

Then she would control him.

And through him…

control Bennett Hospitality.

I looked at Ethan.

“Did you know about this?””

His answer came instantly.

“No.””

I believed him.

For the first time that night, I believed him.

But before I could say anything, Rachel pointed to the final page.

“Mr. Bennett…”

Her voice shook.

“There’s one more signature.””

I turned the page.

And my heart stopped.

Because beneath Vanessa’s name…

was the signature of someone else.

Someone who had been watching this entire time.

Someone who had never entered the ballroom.

Someone from my past.

My former business partner.

May you like

The man who disappeared twenty years ago.

Thomas Reed.
