Chapter 1: The Kiss That Destroyed My Family
“Daddy’s here, girls! You’re finally going to meet him!””
I whispered those words to my three-month-old twin daughters as I stood outside the Miami cruise terminal, trying to keep the Florida sunshine out of their little eyes.
Piper was awake in my arms, sucking on her tiny fist. Poppy slept peacefully in her stroller.
Both wore matching pink outfits with the words DADDY’S LITTLE GIRLS printed across their chests.
I had imagined this moment a hundred times.
My husband, Tyler Carter, had been working aboard a luxury cruise ship for five months. When he left, I was seven months pregnant. He had promised to return before our daughters arrived.
He hadn't.
I gave birth without him.
I spent the first three nights in the hospital learning how to feed two newborns while watching other fathers proudly carry their babies through the maternity ward.
Tyler had watched the delivery through a video call, but the connection had frozen just before Piper was born.
He had never held either daughter.
Still, I never stopped making excuses for him.
His job was demanding. The ship traveled internationally. His internet connection was unreliable.
Every evening, I sent him pictures.
Sometimes he replied with a heart emoji. Sometimes he said he was exhausted.
But I kept believing that when he finally came home, everything would feel normal again.
That morning, I had arranged a surprise with his assistant. Tyler's ship was scheduled to dock at ten.
At 10:17, passengers began pouring through the terminal doors.
I checked every face.
Then I saw him.
My heart practically jumped out of my chest.
“Tyler!””
But my smile disappeared before the sound even left my mouth.
He wasn't alone.
A tall blonde woman walked beside him, wearing oversized designer sunglasses and a white dress that probably cost more than my monthly grocery budget.
Tyler's arm was wrapped around her waist.
She leaned against him.
He lowered his head.
And kissed her.
Not a friendly greeting.
Not a misunderstanding.
A long, intimate kiss.
I stood frozen, holding our daughter while the crowd moved around me.
Then Tyler pulled away and laughed at something she whispered.
My fingers tightened around Piper's blanket.
“Tyler?””
He turned.
His smile vanished.
“Emily?””
I watched his eyes travel from my face to the stroller.
“What the hell are you doing here?””
I swallowed.
“I wanted to surprise you.””
He glanced around nervously.
“Why didn't you tell me you were coming?””
“Because it was supposed to be a surprise.””
The blonde woman removed her sunglasses.
Her eyes moved toward Piper.
“Wait. Who's that?””
I stared at her.
“These are Tyler's daughters.””
She actually laughed.
“Those are his kids?””
I felt something cold settle in my stomach.
“Who are you?””
She extended one manicured hand.
“Vanessa. And you must be the wife.””
I didn't take her hand.
Instead, I looked at my husband.
“Tyler, what's going on?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Emily, this isn't the place.””
“Then where is the place? At our house? Because you've been gone for five months.””
Vanessa adjusted her handbag.
“Sweetheart, don't make this uncomfortable.””
I stared at her.
“You're kissing my husband in public, and I'm making things uncomfortable?””
Tyler stepped closer.
“Keep your voice down.””
I looked down at Piper. Her little fingers had curled around my thumb.
“While I was giving birth, were you with her?””
Tyler didn't answer immediately.
That silence told me more than any confession could.
Finally, he sighed.
“Five months at sea, Emily. Things happen.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“Things happen?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Men get lonely. You should understand that.””
I looked at Tyler again.
“Did you love her?””
He looked away.
Then he said something that made my entire body go cold.
“Vanessa wasn't the only one.””
For a moment, the terminal seemed to disappear.
Five months.
Two newborn daughters.
Hundreds of photographs I had sent him.
And while I was waking every two hours to feed our babies, he had apparently been entertaining himself with other women.
“Do you even want to hold them?”” I whispered.
Tyler glanced at Piper.
Then at Poppy.
“Not right now. Vanessa and I have dinner reservations.””
I nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
He looked confused.
“Okay?””
“Yes. But before you leave, there's someone you should meet.””
I pointed toward a black SUV parked near the entrance.
A tall man in a navy suit was standing beside it.
He held a thick leather folder.
When Vanessa saw him, all the color drained from her face.
“Michael?””
The man began walking toward us.
“Hello, Vanessa.””
Tyler frowned.
“Who the hell is that?””
Michael stopped directly in front of him.
“Michael Bennett. Vanessa's husband.””
Tyler stumbled backward.
“Your husband?””
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Tyler, don't listen to him!””
Michael opened his folder.
“There's something else you should know. My wife has been telling both of you different stories.””
He removed a photograph.
It showed Vanessa holding a newborn baby.
Then he placed a birth certificate beside it.
Tyler looked down.
His expression changed instantly.
The father's name was printed clearly.
TYLER CARTER.
My husband's name.
And beneath it was a date of birth from eight months earlier.
Tyler's lips parted.
“No.””
Michael stared at him.
“Care to explain why your name is on my child's birth certificate?””
I looked at my husband.
Then at the photograph.
“Tyler,” I whispered, “how many children do you have?””
He didn't answer.
May you like
Because for the first time that morning, my husband looked genuinely terrified.
And Vanessa was already reaching for the birth certificate.
