Chapter 12: The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

“Where is Olivia?””

I barely recognized my own voice.

Daniel showed me the photograph again.

“She's being held at a property outside Miami.””

Robert calmly adjusted his cufflinks.

“I'm sure this is all a misunderstanding.””

Tyler grabbed him by the collar.

“Enough! Where is Olivia?””

Robert didn't resist.

Instead, he smiled.

“You've become very aggressive, son.””

“Stop calling me that!””

Robert looked at Linda.

“Your mother never told you how you were conceived, did she?””

Tyler released him.

“What?””

Linda began crying.

Robert continued.

“She told you I was your biological father. She told you I raised you. She told you we were a normal family.””

He leaned toward Tyler.

“But the truth is, you were never supposed to exist.””

Linda slapped him.

“SHUT UP!””

Robert touched his cheek.

Then laughed.

“Still protecting your little secrets?””

Michael stepped forward.

“Take him outside.””

Daniel signaled to the officers.

But before they could move, Robert spoke again.

“Wait.””

He looked directly at me.

“Emily, you deserve to know something about your daughters.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“I'm done listening to you.””

“Then listen to this.””

He pointed toward Piper and Poppy.

“Your daughters weren't the first babies whose identities were changed in that hospital.””

Dr. Reeves lowered his head.

Robert smiled.

“Twenty-nine years ago, two babies were born on the same night. One belonged to Linda. The other belonged to Susan Miller.””

Tyler looked confused.

“Jack and me?””

Robert nodded.

“Except the babies were switched.””

Linda covered her mouth.

I stared at her.

“Are you saying Tyler and Jack were switched at birth?””

Robert nodded.

“Linda gave birth to a boy fathered by David Bennett's father. Susan gave birth to a boy fathered by me.””

Michael's expression changed.

“Then Tyler is…”

Robert smiled.

“My biological son.””

He turned toward Tyler.

“And Jack was David's biological son.””

Tyler looked at Linda.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

She was crying too hard to answer.

Robert continued.

“Because I wanted my son raised in my household. Jack was sent away. Everyone believed the arrangements were permanent.””

Michael shook his head.

“Then why did you tell us Jack was dead?””

“Because Jack became a problem.””

I looked at Robert.

“What happened to him?””

Robert's expression became cold.

“He discovered the truth.””

Tyler stepped backward.

“Did you kill him?””

Robert didn't answer.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“That's enough.””

But Robert had already said too much.

Michael looked toward the officers.

“Arrest him.””

One officer approached.

Robert raised his hands.

“Careful. You have no idea what you're getting involved in.””

The officer ignored him and began reading his rights.

For the first time since meeting him, Robert looked genuinely angry.

“You'll regret this.””

Then his eyes moved toward Linda.

“You especially.””

Linda suddenly stood.

“I'm done being afraid of you.””

She reached into her handbag and removed a small USB drive.

“I kept copies of everything.””

Robert's expression changed.

“What is that?””

“Your original financial records. The hospital payments. The false death certificate. Everything.””

Michael stared at her.

“Why didn't you give this to the authorities?””

Linda looked at Tyler.

“Because I was waiting for the right moment to protect my son.””

Tyler's voice broke.

“You protected me by letting me believe my father was dead?””

Linda couldn't answer.

Then Daniel's phone rang again.

He listened for several seconds.

His expression became serious.

“Michael, we have Olivia's location.””

Robert laughed.

“You're too late.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“Why?””

Robert looked at me.

“Because the person holding Olivia isn't Richard.””

My blood ran cold.

“Then who is it?””

Robert smiled.

“David Bennett.””

Michael's face went white.

“My brother?””

Robert nodded.

“He has Olivia. And he has something she wants.””

“What?””

“The original trust document.””

Michael turned toward Daniel.

“Where is the property?””

Daniel showed him the address.

“We're going.””

I immediately moved toward the door.

Tyler stopped me.

“Emily, stay here with the girls.””

I stared at him.

“I'm not leaving my children with strangers.””

“Then come with us.””

Linda stepped forward.

“Emily, please. Let me take the twins somewhere safe.””

I looked at her.

The woman who had betrayed me.

The woman who had signed the guardianship documents.

The woman who had also risked everything to expose Robert.

“I don't know if I can trust you,” I whispered.

Linda nodded.

“I understand.””

She looked at Piper and Poppy.

Then she gently touched the stroller.

“I've already failed them once. I won't do it again.””

For a moment, I considered letting her take them.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

*EMILY, IT'S OLIVIA. DON'T LET THEM BRING THE TWINS TO THE PROPERTY.*

A second message appeared.

*DAVID ISN'T HOLDING ME. I'M HELPING HIM.*

I looked at Michael.

He was already walking toward the door.

Then another message arrived.

*THE ORIGINAL TRUST DOESN'T BELONG TO ROBERT. IT BELONGS TO THE TWO GIRLS.*

I stared at the screen.

A final message appeared.

*AND THERE'S SOMETHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PIPER.*

My hands began trembling.

I typed back.

WHAT?

The reply came immediately.

*PIPER WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE BORN.*

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Before I could ask what she meant, a final photograph arrived.

It showed a hospital document dated three months before my delivery.

The patient name was mine.

Emily Carter.

The procedure listed was a scheduled pregnancy termination.

But I had never agreed to one.

At the bottom of the document was a signature.

Tyler Carter.

I slowly turned toward my husband.

He was standing beside the door.

His face was completely white.

“Tyler?””

He looked at the document.

Then he whispered:

May you like

“Emily, I can explain.””

And for the first time, I realized that perhaps my husband had known much more about our daughters than he had ever admitted.
