Chapter 13: The Signature That Nearly Erased My Daughter
“Emily, please let me explain.””
Tyler stood beside the office door, staring at the document in my hand.
I couldn't stop looking at his signature.
It was unmistakably his.
The date was three months before Piper and Poppy were born. The document authorized a medical procedure that would have ended my pregnancy.
I looked up slowly.
“You signed a termination request?””
Tyler swallowed.
“I didn't know what I was signing.””
“You didn't know?””
“Your father had been contacting me. He told me there was something medically wrong with the pregnancy. He said the doctors had discovered a serious complication.””
I shook my head.
“My father?””
“No. My father. Robert.””
I stared at him.
“Why would you believe him?””
“Because he sent me medical reports. He said one of the babies might not survive.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“So you signed a document to terminate my pregnancy without even speaking to me?””
Tyler lowered his head.
“I was terrified.””
“You were terrified? I was carrying two babies, Tyler! I was the one going to the hospital. I was the one waking up at night wondering whether they were okay!””
He stepped toward me.
I raised my hand.
“Don't.””
Linda stood silently in the corner.
Finally, she spoke.
“Emily, the document was never submitted to the hospital.””
I turned toward her.
“How do you know?””
“Because I stopped it.””
Tyler looked at his mother.
“You?””
Linda nodded.
“Robert gave you false medical information. He wanted the pregnancy terminated because he believed the girls would complicate his inheritance plans.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
Linda took a breath.
“Because Piper and Poppy were not part of his original plan. Robert believed that if the pregnancy continued, the existence of the twins would expose the family secrets.””
Tyler looked at the floor.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“But you did.””
Before he could answer, Daniel approached.
“We need to leave. Olivia has sent another location.””
Michael was already waiting near the exit.
I secured the twins in their stroller.
Tyler reached for the handle.
“I'll push them.””
I looked at him.
“No. I'll do it.””
He stepped back.
For once, he didn't argue.
The address Olivia had sent led to an old waterfront property outside Miami.
Daniel drove while Michael followed in another vehicle.
During the journey, I reread Olivia's messages.
Piper was never supposed to be born.
What did that mean?
And why had Olivia insisted that the twins' inheritance belonged to them?
When we arrived, the property appeared abandoned.
A rusted gate hung open.
The front windows were covered with wooden boards.
Daniel approached first.
“Stay behind me.””
We entered through a side door.
Inside, the building smelled of damp wood and old furniture.
A light flickered in the hallway.
Then a woman's voice called out.
“Emily?””
Olivia appeared from behind a doorway.
Her cheek was bruised, but she was standing.
I rushed toward her.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
“I am now.””
Michael looked around.
“Where's David?””
Olivia pointed toward the kitchen.
A man stepped into view.
He looked remarkably like Michael.
But unlike his brother, he had a small scar running along his jaw.
“Hello, Michael.””
Michael froze.
“David.””
The brothers stared at each other.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Michael crossed the room and grabbed him.
“Where have you been?””
David looked away.
“Surviving.””
Michael released him.
“You let everyone believe you were dead.””
“I had reasons.””
“You fathered a child with Vanessa?””
David's expression hardened.
“That isn't what happened.””
Olivia stepped forward.
“Can we please stop pretending this is about old family arguments?””
She looked at me.
“Emily, I found the original trust.””
She placed a leather folder on the table.
Inside were several pages of legal documents bearing the signature of my grandfather-in-law.
The original estate had been established for all biological descendants.
But one section was different.
It specifically named Piper and Poppy as protected beneficiaries.
I looked at Olivia.
“Why would they be named? They weren't even born when this was written.””
Olivia shook her head.
“They weren't named individually. The document protects all future descendants of the family, including children whose identities might be concealed or altered.””
Michael leaned forward.
“So Robert couldn't legally remove them?””
“Correct.””
David pointed to another page.
“But there's a condition.””
I read it.
The estate could only be administered by an independent trustee if the biological identities of all disputed heirs were verified.
Tyler frowned.
“Who is the trustee?””
Olivia looked at me.
“You are.””
I stared.
“Me?””
She nodded.
“Your grandfather-in-law named you as the future independent guardian of the children's interests if Robert attempted to manipulate their identities.””
I felt overwhelmed.
“Why would he choose me?””
David answered.
“Because he knew what Robert was capable of.””
Suddenly, a door slammed behind us.
Everyone turned.
Robert stood in the entrance.
He was holding a small black pistol.
“Put the folder down, Olivia.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Robert, it's over.””
Robert laughed.
“You really think a few pieces of paper can destroy everything I've built?””
Olivia held the folder tightly.
“You can't change the truth anymore.””
Robert raised the weapon.
“Give it to me.””
Then he looked at Tyler.
“Son, move aside.””
Tyler stepped in front of me and the stroller.
“No.””
Robert's expression darkened.
“I gave you everything.””
“You gave me lies.””
For a moment, Robert looked almost wounded.
Then he pointed the gun toward Piper and Poppy.
“Last chance.””
Before anyone could move, a loud crash came from the rear entrance.
A woman shouted:
“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP THE WEAPON!””
Robert spun around.
A second later, the pistol hit the floor.
Two officers rushed inside and restrained him.
But as they dragged him away, Robert turned toward me.
“You think you've won, Emily?””
I held my daughters close.
He smiled.
“Ask Linda what happened to your real father.””
Then the officers took him outside.
I turned toward my mother-in-law.
Her face had gone completely white.
“Linda?””
She looked at me.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“Emily, there's something about your childhood that I never told you.””
