Chapter 14: The Mother-in-Law's Final Confession

I stood in the middle of the abandoned house, unable to move.

Robert's final words kept repeating in my mind.

Ask Linda what happened to your real father.

I turned toward my mother-in-law.

“What did he mean?””

Linda sat down slowly.

Her hands trembled.

“I was hoping you would never have to know.””

“Know what?””

She looked at Tyler.

“Your wife was adopted.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Linda took a breath.

“Your biological parents died when you were very young. Robert arranged for you to be placed with another family.””

I shook my head.

“No. My parents raised me. They were my parents.””

“They loved you,” Linda said quickly.

“Nothing changes that.””

“Then why are you telling me this?””

Linda looked at Olivia.

“Because Robert knew your biological family had a connection to the original estate.””

Michael frowned.

“Which family?””

Linda opened the leather folder and removed a faded photograph.

It showed a young woman holding a baby.

The woman had my eyes.

My nose.

Even the small dimple on her left cheek.

I took the photograph.

“Who is she?””

Linda whispered:

“Your biological mother. Her name was Elizabeth Bennett.””

Michael stared.

“Bennett?””

David stepped forward.

“That's impossible.””

Linda nodded.

“Elizabeth was our father's daughter from an earlier relationship.””

Michael looked stunned.

“Our father's daughter?””

“Yes. She was your half-sister.””

I stared at the photograph.

“So I'm related to the Bennett family?””

Linda nodded.

“And to the Carter family through your biological mother's connection to the original estate.””

Tyler looked at her.

“Then Emily and I…”

Linda closed her eyes.

“You are not biologically related.””

I felt tears slipping down my cheeks.

I didn't know whether to feel relieved or devastated.

Everything I thought I knew about my family had been rewritten.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

Linda reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

“Because Robert believed the truth would give you control over the trust.””

Olivia stepped forward.

“That's why he targeted you.””

I looked at her.

“Why me?””

“Because the original trust wasn't simply an inheritance. It was designed to protect the descendants of Elizabeth Bennett.””

David nodded.

“Your biological grandfather established it after discovering that Robert had been manipulating the family records.””

I looked down at the document.

My name appeared beside the words:

INDEPENDENT BENEFICIARY REPRESENTATIVE.

I couldn't believe it.

The house.

The loan.

The guardianship papers.

The falsified DNA reports.

Everything had been connected to an inheritance I hadn't even known existed.

Then Michael spoke.

“There's still one issue.””

Everyone turned.

He looked at David.

“Vanessa.””

David lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

Tyler frowned.

“What does she have to do with this?””

David took a breath.

“Vanessa was working with Robert long before she met me.””

Michael looked furious.

“She was my wife.””

“She married you because Robert wanted access to your corporate accounts.””

Michael shook his head.

“She loved me.””

David said nothing.

Michael's voice broke.

“Did she ever love me?””

David looked at him.

“I don't know.””

Olivia placed another document on the table.

“This is the original financial transfer record. Vanessa received payments from Robert for more than a year.””

Michael studied it.

Then his expression changed.

“Wait.””

He pointed to one transaction.

“This money was transferred after Vanessa gave birth.””

David nodded.

“That's when she started lying about the baby's father.””

Tyler looked at him.

“Is the baby yours?””

David hesitated.

“I don't know.””

Michael stared.

“What do you mean?””

“The DNA report was manipulated. I never received an independent result.””

Olivia nodded.

“That's why we need a new test.””

I looked at her.

“What about Poppy?””

“The same. The original report suggests David is her biological father, but the chain of custody was compromised.””

I held Poppy closer.

“Then we need to start over. No more secret tests. No more documents signed behind my back.””

Everyone nodded.

An hour later, the authorities had secured the property and taken Robert into custody.

Daniel informed us that financial investigators had recovered several accounts and that the attempted loan against our house would be formally challenged.

But I wasn't thinking about money.

I was thinking about the two little girls sleeping in their stroller.

They deserved a childhood without secrets.

They deserved parents who protected them.

And they deserved the truth.

That evening, Tyler asked to speak with me outside.

We stood beneath a large oak tree near the property entrance.

He looked exhausted.

“Emily, I know there's nothing I can say to fix what I've done.””

I remained silent.

“I cheated on you. I lied to you. I abandoned you when you needed me most.””

He swallowed.

“But I want to be their father.””

I looked at him.

“You don't become a father because your name is printed on a birth certificate.””

“I know.””

“You become one because you're there. Because you wake up at three in the morning when they cry. Because you change diapers. Because you show up even when it's difficult.””

He nodded.

“I want to do that.””

I looked toward the stroller.

“Then start proving it.””

He wiped his eyes.

“Does that mean there's still hope for us?””

I took a long breath.

“I don't know, Tyler.””

He nodded slowly.

Then his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He handed me the phone.

A message from Vanessa.

*TYLER, THEY'RE LYING TO YOU. THE BABY IN THE CERTIFICATE ISN'T DAVID'S. IT'S ROBERT'S.*

I stared at the message.

Another arrived.

*AND BEFORE YOU ASK, I'M NOT THE ONLY WOMAN HE GOT PREGNANT.*

I looked up.

“Tyler…”

He read the message again.

Then his phone rang.

An unknown number.

He answered.

A woman's voice came through.

“Is this Tyler Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Patricia. I was the nurse on duty when your daughters were born.””

Tyler looked at me.

Patricia continued.

“I've been trying to reach Emily for months.””

“Why?”” I asked.

The nurse hesitated.

“Because I kept a copy of the original hospital records.””

My heart began pounding.

“What records?””

“The records showing what really happened that night.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

Patricia's next words changed everything.

“Emily, you didn't give birth to two daughters that night.””

I couldn't breathe.

“What?””

There was a long silence.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“You gave birth to three babies.””
