Chapter 10: The Woman Who Stole Her Own Identity

“That's impossible.””

Tyler's voice echoed through Dr. Reeves's office.

Linda stood motionless, clutching the envelope against her chest.

I looked from her to the photograph.

The young woman holding the newborn looked remarkably like Olivia, the woman who had helped us uncover the laboratory reports.

But if Linda was telling the truth, Olivia wasn't Jack Carter's daughter.

She was Robert's firstborn child.

And somehow, she had been pretending to be someone else.

“Linda,” I said carefully, “are you telling us Olivia lied about her identity?””

Linda nodded.

“She has been lying for years.””

Tyler stepped closer.

“Why would she do that?””

Linda looked at her son.

“Because Robert abandoned her mother. Susan raised Olivia alone until she died. When Olivia discovered who her biological father was, she tried to contact him.””

“What happened?””

“Robert rejected her.””

Michael folded his arms.

“And then?””

Linda swallowed.

“Then she discovered the family trust. She realized that if she could establish her identity, she could claim a substantial inheritance. But Robert had already arranged for the trust to pass through other family members.””

Dr. Reeves interrupted.

“That's not entirely accurate.””

Linda turned sharply.

“Samuel, don't.””

He ignored her.

“Olivia came to me six months ago. She had already obtained her original birth records. She wanted to prove her identity, not steal anyone's inheritance.””

Tyler looked at Linda.

“Then why did you tell us she switched the DNA samples?””

Linda lowered her eyes.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked toward the window.

“Robert.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Enough. You're going to tell us everything.””

Linda sat down.

For the first time, she looked genuinely old.

“Robert never died,” she began.

“He staged his death because several people were investigating his financial activities. He needed time to move money and disappear.””

Tyler's face hardened.

“You let me bury an empty coffin?””

Linda began crying.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You watched me cry at his funeral!””

“I know.””

“You stood beside me while I put flowers on his grave!””

“I KNOW, TYLER!””

Her voice cracked.

Then she covered her face.

Nobody spoke.

I looked down at my daughters.

They were sleeping peacefully, unaware that the adults around them had turned their existence into a battlefield.

I wanted to take them home.

I wanted to lock every door.

I wanted to erase the last twelve hours.

But we were too far into this nightmare to walk away.

“Linda,” I said, “what happened at the hospital?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Robert knew David had been seeing me. He also knew David was the biological father of Jack. When David disappeared, Robert took control of the situation.””

“Did you know David was Poppy's father?””

Linda nodded.

“I knew he might be.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Robert threatened to expose everything.””

Tyler laughed bitterly.

“You always say he threatened you. What did he actually have on you?””

Linda looked at her son.

Then she reached into the envelope.

She removed a photograph.

It showed Tyler as a newborn baby, lying in a hospital crib.

A handwritten note was attached.

*PATERNITY CONFIRMATION — ROBERT CARTER.*

Linda placed it on the desk.

“Robert wasn't your biological father, Tyler.””

The room went silent.

Tyler stared at the photograph.

“What?””

“I was pregnant when I married Robert. Your biological father was someone else.””

Michael slowly looked toward Dr. Reeves.

The doctor seemed unsurprised.

“Who?”” Tyler demanded.

Linda began shaking.

“Your biological father was David Bennett's father.””

Michael's face changed.

“My father?””

Linda nodded.

“That's why Robert hated the Bennett family. He knew you weren't his son. He knew Jack wasn't his biological grandson. And he knew that the inheritance could eventually pass outside his control.””

Tyler looked as though he might collapse.

“So David and I…”

“You are half-brothers,” Linda whispered.

Michael stepped back.

“Then David and Tyler share a father?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Suddenly, the DNA results made more sense.

David had been connected to Poppy.

Tyler had been connected to Piper.

And the two men shared the same biological father.

But another question remained.

“Why would Olivia switch the samples?””

Linda shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Dr. Reeves looked toward the hallway.

“There's something you haven't considered.””

We turned.

He picked up the photograph of Olivia.

“She didn't switch the samples to steal the inheritance.””

“Then why?”” I asked.

He placed another document on the desk.

“Because the original samples were never supposed to be tested.””

Michael frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Dr. Reeves pointed to the date.

“Someone ordered a second DNA test after the first one. The second test was designed to determine whether Piper and Poppy were eligible for a different trust.””

Tyler looked at the document.

“Whose trust?””

The doctor slowly answered.

“Your grandfather's original estate. The one Robert claimed had been destroyed.””

Before anyone could respond, Daniel rushed into the office.

“Everyone needs to leave. Now.””

Michael stood.

“What happened?””

Daniel showed us his phone.

A security camera image displayed the clinic entrance.

A black vehicle had just parked outside.

Three men were getting out.

And one of them was Robert Carter.

Daniel looked directly at Linda.

“He knows you're here.””

Linda stood abruptly.

Then she whispered something that made my blood turn cold.

“That's not Robert.””

Tyler frowned.

“What?””

Linda pointed at the screen.

“That's his brother.””

I stared at the photograph.

The man looked exactly like Robert.

Linda swallowed.

May you like

“Robert had an identical twin.””

And suddenly, I understood why so many people had been able to pretend the dead man was alive.
