Chapter 10: The Photograph From The Past
The photograph sat on the table between us.
A small piece of paper.
A lifetime of questions.
I stared at it until my eyes burned.
Thomas.
My wife.
A newborn child.
My hands felt cold.
Because I recognized the hospital blanket.
I recognized the room.
I recognized the necklace around my wife’s neck.
It was taken the day Claire was born.
But the man standing beside my wife wasn’t me.
It was Thomas.
Ethan looked at me.
“Dad?””
I couldn’t answer.
Not because I didn’t want to.
Because I didn’t know how.
Claire slowly picked up the photograph.
Her hands trembled.
“That’s my mother.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“And that’s Thomas.””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Why was he there?””
The question had been haunting me for decades.
But I had never allowed myself to ask it.
Not even after Emily died.
Not even after Thomas betrayed me.
Because some questions are easier to bury than to answer.
Vanessa watched silently.
She wanted this moment.
She wanted confusion.
She wanted pain.
But she didn’t understand something.
Truth, no matter how painful, was still stronger than a lie.
I looked at her.
“Where did you get this?””
She smiled.
“From Thomas.””
“Where is he?””
“You’ll find out soon enough.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Everyone turned.
His voice was different.
Stronger.
“I don’t care what happened twenty years ago. My father deserves answers.””
I looked at him.
For the first time that night, I saw the man he could become.
Not Vanessa’s husband.
Not my successor.
Just my son.
Rachel handed me another folder.
“Mr. Bennett, there’s more.””
I opened it.
Inside were copies of old documents.
Birth records.
Hospital records.
Private letters.
My heart raced.
“How did you get these?””
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
“She had them.””
Of course.
Vanessa wasn’t just trying to steal my company.
She had been digging through my entire life.
I looked through the pages.
Then I saw something.
A date.
A date that changed everything.
The hospital record showed Claire’s birth.
But the father’s name was blank.
I looked at Claire.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked confused.
“For what?””
I hesitated.
Because the truth was painful.
“Your mother never told me about you until years later.””
Claire frowned.
“What?””
I took a breath.
“Emily and I were separated before she passed away.””
The room became quiet.
Ethan looked shocked.
“You never told me that.””
“I wanted to protect your memories of her.””
I looked down.
“Your mother and I loved each other. But we were human. We made mistakes.””
Claire listened carefully.
“Then how did you find out about me?””
I closed my eyes.
“Because Emily left me a letter.””
A letter I had carried for years.
A letter explaining everything.
“She told me she had a daughter.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“She knew you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me about you?””
I looked at her.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
I looked at the photograph.
“Of Thomas.””
The name changed the room.
Even Vanessa stopped smiling.
Ethan noticed.
“What did Thomas do?””
I sat down.
Because I was tired of standing.
Tired of pretending old wounds didn’t hurt.
“Thomas loved Emily.””
Claire looked shocked.
“What?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the photograph.
“He loved her before she met me.””
The truth finally came out.
“After Emily and I married, Thomas stayed close. He claimed he was only a friend.””
I paused.
“But he never accepted losing her.””
Claire whispered:
“So he knew about me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
I looked at her.
“Because Thomas hid the truth from me.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“And now you understand.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice was firm.
“I understand one thing.””
“What?””
“You and Thomas have been using my family’s pain as a weapon.””
Her expression changed.
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
The security supervisor entered.
“Chairman.””
I turned.
“What is it?””
“We found Thomas.””
Everyone froze.
“Where?””
He looked toward the ballroom doors.
“He’s here.””
The doors opened.
A man walked inside.
Older.
Gray hair.
But the same cold eyes I remembered.
Thomas Reed.
He looked around the ballroom.
Then smiled.
“Richard.””
Twenty years disappeared in a single second.
“You look surprised.””
I stood.
“Thomas.””
He glanced at Ethan.
Then Claire.
Then Vanessa.
“You finally learned the truth.””
I stared at him.
“What truth?””
He smiled.
“The truth that your perfect family was never yours.””
The room became silent.
And then Thomas said the words I never expected.
“Richard, Claire isn’t my daughter.””
May you like
He looked directly at me.
“She’s yours.””
