Chapter 6: The Daughter Nobody Knew

The ballroom went completely silent.

Another child.

Those three words carried more weight than any accusation Vanessa had made all night.

Ethan looked at me.

His eyes were filled with confusion and pain.

“Dad…”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I knew this moment would come someday.

I just never imagined it would happen this way.

At my son’s wedding.

With my family breaking apart in front of strangers.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Tell him the truth.””

I looked at her.

“You’ve been waiting for this.””

She smiled slightly.

“Because Ethan deserves to know.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Vanessa, you don’t know the whole story.””

Vanessa laughed.

“I know enough.””

Ethan looked between us.

“Dad, do you have another child?””

I took a slow breath.

“Yes.””

His face changed.

The word hurt him.

I could see it.

“How long?””

I looked down.

“Your entire life.””

He stepped back.

The pain in his eyes was worse than anger.

“You had another child…”

I nodded.

“But not the way you think.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“Don’t let him twist this.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew about Claire.””

She hesitated.

“I knew there was someone.””

“But you didn’t know the truth.””

“No.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Because Claire is not my daughter.””

He froze.

“What?””

Claire looked down.

My voice became quiet.

“She was your mother’s daughter.””

Everyone stared.

Ethan shook his head.

“I don’t understand.””

Claire finally spoke.

“My mother was Richard’s first love.””

The room gasped.

Before anyone could judge, she continued.

“But she died before Richard and your mother married.””

I nodded.

“Her name was Emily.””

I remembered her.

Not with regret.

With respect.

“She had a daughter.””

I looked at Claire.

“When Emily passed away, your mother found out.””

Ethan stared.

“Mom knew?””

“Yes.””

Claire smiled sadly.

“Your mother was the one who found me.””

She looked at Ethan.

“She told me I was part of the family.””

Ethan looked overwhelmed.

“So she raised you?””

Claire nodded.

“She became the mother I never had.””

The room softened.

The story was no longer about betrayal.

It was about love.

A different kind of love.

I continued.

“Claire never wanted the company.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“But she was named heir.””

I looked at her.

“Because she understood something you never did.””

“What?””

“She valued family more than money.””

Claire opened the folder.

Inside was another document.

“My mother left instructions.””

She handed it to Ethan.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

“What does it say?””

He looked at me.

“It says I don’t receive full control of the company until I prove I can put family before pride.””

I nodded.

“That was your mother’s condition.””

Ethan looked devastated.

“So Vanessa was right about one thing.””

I waited.

“She knew Claire existed.””

“Yes.””

“And I was afraid you would choose her over me.””

I walked closer.

“Ethan.””

He looked at me.

“I never wanted to replace you.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“You were my son.””

I touched his shoulder.

“You still are.””

For a moment, I thought maybe there was still hope.

Then Vanessa ruined it.

“You’re both pretending this is some beautiful family reunion.””

Her voice was sharp.

“But let’s not forget something.””

Everyone turned.

She pointed at Ethan.

“He signed the papers.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

She was right.

The truth hurt because it was simple.

He had made a choice.

I looked at my son.

“What else did you sign?””

His face changed.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled.

A cold, confident smile.

“There’s more.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you do?””

Ethan looked terrified.

“I only signed the inheritance documents.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He signed something else.””

The hotel manager stepped forward.

“Chairman…”

I turned.

He looked nervous.

“We found another file.””

“Where?””

“In the wedding office.””

He handed me a folder.

I opened it.

The first page made my hands go cold.

Because it wasn’t a transfer agreement.

It wasn’t a loan application.

It was something much worse.

A document naming Ethan as the person responsible for removing me from Bennett Hospitality Group.

And at the bottom…

Was my son’s signature.

I looked at Ethan.

He whispered:

“Dad…”

But I couldn’t hear anything else.

Because for the first time in my life…

May you like

I wondered if my son had been Vanessa’s victim…

or her partner.
