Chapter 3: The Son I Raised

I had faced business rivals.

I had survived economic crashes.

I had rebuilt my company after losing almost everything.

But nothing prepared me for standing in a wedding ballroom and realizing my own son had helped someone bury me before I was even gone.

Ethan looked broken.

“Dad, I swear I didn’t know.””

I studied his face.

The same face I had kissed goodnight when he was five years old.

The same face that cried when he lost his first baseball game.

The same face that now belonged to a man who had signed documents against me.

“Then tell me what you thought you were signing.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa stepped between us.

“This is getting ridiculous.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She forced a smile.

“Richard, clearly there has been confusion. Ethan was emotional after hearing about your death.””

I looked at her.

“You expected me not to return?””

She stayed silent.

“That was the plan, wasn’t it?””

Her expression hardened.

“I don’t know what you think happened.””

I smiled sadly.

“You don’t have to tell me.””

I pointed at the documents.

“These already did.””

The hotel manager quietly spoke.

“Chairman, should we contact authorities?””

Vanessa immediately panicked.

“No!””

The room went silent again.

I noticed it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not embarrassment.

Not anger.

Fear.

I walked toward the table where my wedding gift had fallen earlier.

The wooden box was still there.

I picked it up.

The ring inside caught the light.

“My wife wore this ring for thirty-eight years.””

Nobody spoke.

“She believed family was the most valuable thing a person could have.””

I looked at Ethan.

“She was wrong.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Dad…”

I shook my head.

“Your mother would have forgiven you quickly.””

I paused.

“But I need to know if you regret what you did because you hurt me… or because you got caught.””

That question destroyed him.

He sat down.

“I thought I was protecting myself.””

“From what?””

“From losing everything.””

I stared at him.

“You thought you were losing everything?””

My voice became quiet.

“Ethan, I gave you everything.””

He covered his face.

“I was scared.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

He looked at Vanessa.

And for the first time, I saw doubt in his eyes.

Vanessa noticed too.

“Ethan.””

Her voice became sharp.

“Don’t.””

That single word revealed their relationship.

Control.

Not love.

I turned toward her.

“How long have you known about my company?””

She said nothing.

“How long have you been planning this?””

Still nothing.

Then the security supervisor received a message on his radio.

He stepped closer.

“Chairman, we found something.””

“What?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“More evidence.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What evidence?””

The supervisor ignored her.

“Security footage from three weeks ago.””

He handed me a tablet.

I pressed play.

The video showed Vanessa entering my private office.

My office.

The one with restricted access.

She was carrying a folder.

Behind her was Daniel Hayes, my former CFO.

I watched as they opened my safe.

The ballroom gasped.

Ethan stared at his wife.

“You said you never met him.””

Vanessa looked desperate.

“That video is fake.””

The security supervisor shook his head.

“Recorded by the hotel’s internal system. Timestamp verified.””

I kept watching.

Then something appeared on the screen.

A document.

A document I recognized.

My original will.

Vanessa had taken it from my office.

My blood ran cold.

Because that document contained one secret nobody outside my family knew.

A secret about Ethan’s inheritance.

A secret that explained why she wanted me gone.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You weren’t trying to steal my company.””

She froze.

“You were trying to steal something else.””

Her face went pale.

The ballroom waited.

I slowly placed the tablet on the table.

“Tell me, Vanessa…”

I looked at my son.

May you like

Then back at her.

“Did you know Ethan wasn’t my only heir?””
