Chapter 9: The House That Was Never Supposed to Exist

I spent the entire drive home staring at the address on the trust amendment.

The Carter estate.

According to Claire, it had belonged to my mother before being transferred into a private holding company.

But that made no sense.

My mother, Eleanor, had died when I was twenty-eight.

She had left behind a modest home, a few investments, and enough money to help me start my business.

There had never been a secret estate.

At least, that's what I'd believed.

When I arrived home, Rachel was waiting in the kitchen.

Lily sat beside her, eating a grilled cheese sandwich.

She looked up and smiled.

"Daddy!""

I smiled back.

"How's my girl?""

"I ate all my lunch!""

I kissed her forehead.

"I'm proud of you.""

She pointed at her plate.

"Can I have another one?""

I looked at Rachel.

She smiled.

"Of course she can.""

For the first time in days, Lily laughed.

I stood there watching her eat.

Then I remembered Daniel's messages.

He wanted to take this little girl away.

He wanted to erase her surname, separate her from her father, and gain access to everything her mother had left behind.

I wouldn't let him.

After Lily finished eating, Rachel took her upstairs.

I called Robert.

"I need you to investigate a property called the Carter estate.""

There was a pause.

"Where did you hear that name?""

"Claire Carter.""

Another silence.

Then Robert said, "Marcus, there's something I should have told you earlier.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"Your mother established a private family trust before she died.""

"I know about the trust.""

"No. You know about the public trust. There was a second one.""

I sat down.

"What's the difference?""

"The public trust contained the assets you inherited. The private trust contained a property portfolio that was never transferred directly to you.""

"Why not?""

"Because your mother wanted the assets protected until Lily was born.""

I stared at the wall.

"Why Lily?""

"Your mother believed her granddaughter should inherit something independent of the family business.""

I swallowed.

"How much is it worth?""

"Approximately $2.8 million.""

I couldn't speak.

Robert continued.

"The Carter estate is one of the properties.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Why is Daniel involved?""

"Your mother named him as a secondary administrator under very specific conditions. But he was never supposed to control the assets.""

"Did he know?""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The missing piece.

Daniel hadn't simply wanted the $740,000 in Lily's trust.

He wanted access to a much larger inheritance.

"Who is the primary administrator?""

"You are.""

I stared at the paperwork in front of me.

"Then why does Daniel think he can take it?""

Robert answered carefully.

"Because the original trust includes a provision allowing an alternate administrator to assume temporary control if the primary administrator is declared legally incapable of managing the beneficiary's affairs.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"That's why he forged the guardianship papers.""

"Exactly.""

"He wants me declared unfit so he can control the estate.""

"That's what it appears to be.""

I leaned back.

"Can we stop him?""

"Your mother's trust includes protections against fraudulent transfers. But we need to act quickly.""

Before I could respond, Rachel came downstairs.

She was holding Lily's drawing.

"Marcus, you need to see this.""

I took it.

It was another picture of our family.

This time, Lily had drawn three people.

Herself.

Me.

And a woman wearing a blue dress.

Emily.

Underneath, she'd written:

*Mommy says Daddy will always find me.*

My eyes burned.

Rachel sat beside me.

"She drew this after her nightmare last night.""

I looked at her.

"What nightmare?""

"She said she dreamed Vanessa locked her in the laundry room again.""

I closed my eyes.

Rachel lowered her voice.

"Marcus, she also said something about Daniel.""

"What?""

"He told her that if she ever went to the big house, she'd have to live with him forever.""

My attention returned to the address.

The big house.

The Carter estate.

I immediately called Officer Harris.

He listened while I explained what Robert had discovered.

"Mr. Williams, don't go to that property yourself.""

"I'm not going to sit here while my brother makes another move.""

"We have investigators working on it.""

"Then I want to know what they're finding.""

He paused.

"Actually, we received some information this afternoon.""

"What information?""

"Daniel has been attempting to sell the property.""

I frowned.

"How can he sell something he doesn't own?""

"That's precisely the problem. He's submitted documents claiming temporary authority over the family trust.""

"Using the forged guardianship papers?""

"Possibly. We're investigating.""

Then Officer Harris added:

"There's a scheduled inspection at the property tomorrow morning.""

"By whom?""

"A representative of a private investment company.""

I stared at the document.

"Which company?""

He gave me the name.

Northbridge Family Consulting.

The same company that had received $186,000 from Lily's trust.

I felt sick.

Daniel wasn't just stealing money.

He was trying to sell the very property that had been reserved for Lily.

That evening, Robert sent me a copy of the original property deed.

I opened the document.

My mother's signature appeared at the bottom.

And below it was a clause that made me sit upright.

*The beneficiary shall receive full ownership of the estate upon reaching the age of eighteen, provided that no unauthorized transfer or encumbrance has been made during the period of guardianship.*

I read the sentence twice.

Then I noticed something handwritten in the margin.

It was my mother's handwriting.

*If anyone attempts to take this property before Lily turns eighteen, the original ownership records must be presented to the court.*

I called Robert.

"Why did my mother add this?""

He sounded troubled.

"Because she suspected Daniel would eventually try something similar.""

I looked toward the staircase.

Lily was upstairs, sleeping safely for the first time in days.

"Robert, I need the original records.""

"I'll bring them tomorrow.""

But before we could end the call, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Mr. Williams, my name is Andrew Carter. I represent the investment company interested in your family's estate.""

I tightened my grip.

"What do you want?""

"Your brother told us the property transfer had been approved.""

"It hasn't.""

There was a pause.

"That's concerning.""

"Daniel has no authority to sell it.""

Andrew sighed.

"Then perhaps you should know something.""

"What?""

"Your brother has already collected a substantial deposit.""

My stomach dropped.

"How much?""

"Four hundred thousand dollars.""

I stood up.

"Where is the money?""

"That's not my concern. But there's something else you should know.""

He lowered his voice.

"The buyer isn't interested in the property itself.""

I froze.

"Then what are they interested in?""

Andrew hesitated.

Then he said:

"The sealed basement beneath the estate.""

I looked at my mother's handwritten note.

The house that was never supposed to exist.

The inheritance Daniel had been chasing for years.

And now I understood why he'd been so desperate to get Lily there.

May you like

Because whatever was hidden beneath that house was worth more to him than the entire inheritance.

And according to Andrew, Daniel planned to open it tomorrow morning.
