Chapter 12: The Day Daniel Came for Lily

I drove home behind the police vehicle.

My hands were shaking so badly that I had to grip the steering wheel with both hands.

Officer Harris had refused to give me details over the phone.

All he had said was that Daniel had contacted Lily.

When we reached my house, Rachel was standing on the front porch.

Her face was pale.

I jumped out of the car.

"Where's Lily?""

Rachel rushed toward me.

"She's inside. She's safe.""

I nearly collapsed with relief.

"What happened?""

Rachel pointed toward the living room.

"Daniel called.""

I followed her inside.

Lily was sitting on the couch, wrapped in a blanket.

Her stuffed rabbit was in her lap.

The television was off.

She looked up when I entered.

"Daddy!""

I rushed toward her.

She threw her arms around my neck.

"I didn't go with him!""

I held her tightly.

"Of course you didn't.""

Rachel explained what had happened.

At 11:42 a.m., someone had knocked on the front door.

Rachel checked through the window.

It was Daniel.

He was wearing a dark suit and carrying a gift bag.

He claimed he had come to apologize.

Rachel refused to open the door.

Daniel had smiled and held up the bag.

"I brought something for my niece.""

Rachel told him to leave.

Instead, he walked around the side of the house.

He found the garden gate unlocked and approached the kitchen entrance.

Rachel immediately locked the door.

Daniel called Lily's name through the glass.

"Sweetheart! It's Uncle Daniel!""

Lily had been upstairs.

She came running down when she heard his voice.

Rachel stepped in front of her.

"Don't go near the door.""

But Daniel continued speaking.

"Princess, I brought you something special. Remember the big house I told you about?""

Lily started crying.

Rachel moved her away.

Then Daniel said something that made Rachel call the police.

"Your daddy doesn't know the truth about your mommy. I do.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"What truth?""

Rachel shook her head.

"I don't know. He left before the officers arrived.""

Officer Harris listened carefully.

"Did he leave anything?""

Rachel pointed toward the porch.

There was a gift bag sitting beside the door.

Officer Miller examined it.

Inside was a pink doll, a box of chocolates, and a folded note.

I opened the note.

*Lily,*

*I know Daddy has told you terrible things about me. But I'm your family too. Your mother wanted you to have the big house, and I can make sure you get everything she promised.*

*Come with me tomorrow. I'll show you something your father has hidden from you.*

*Love, Uncle Daniel.*

I crumpled the paper.

Officer Harris carefully took it from my hand.

"This is concerning.""

I looked at Rachel.

"Did he threaten you?""

"No. But he kept saying he had legal permission to take Lily.""

Officer Harris nodded.

"We'll add this to the report.""

I sat beside Lily.

"Sweetheart, did Uncle Daniel say anything else?""

She nodded.

"He said Mommy left me a secret.""

I swallowed.

"What secret?""

"He said Mommy wanted me to go with him.""

I gently took her hands.

"Your mommy wanted you to be safe. That's what matters.""

Lily looked at me.

"Then why did he say you were keeping something from me?""

I didn't know how to answer.

Before I could speak, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

"What do you want?""

His voice was calm.

"Good afternoon, brother.""

"Stay away from my daughter.""

"You're being emotional.""

"You came to my house after the police told you to stay away.""

"I came to see my niece.""

"You tried to take her.""

Daniel sighed.

"Marcus, you always were dramatic.""

I clenched my jaw.

"Tell me what you want.""

"The estate.""

"You're not getting it.""

"Then we have a problem.""

I looked at Officer Harris, who motioned for me to keep him talking.

Daniel continued.

"Mother made a mistake when she gave everything to you.""

"She gave Lily the estate.""

"Exactly. And you have no idea what she left inside it.""

"I've seen the records.""

Daniel laughed.

"You've seen some records.""

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?""

"Did Robert show you the original agreement?""

"Which agreement?""

"The one Emily signed.""

I looked toward Robert's letter on the table.

"Emily signed what?""

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"Ask your lawyer why your wife agreed to make me Lily's emergency guardian.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

"That's impossible.""

"Is it?""

"Emily would never have done that.""

Daniel chuckled.

"Then why is her signature on the document?""

I ended the call.

Immediately, I turned toward Robert.

"Is there another agreement?""

Robert looked troubled.

"I haven't seen one.""

"Daniel says Emily signed a document naming him as Lily's emergency guardian.""

Robert shook his head.

"That would contradict her explicit instructions.""

"Then where did he get her signature?""

Officer Harris interrupted.

"We need to obtain that document and verify it.""

I looked at my daughter.

Lily was watching us silently.

Then she spoke.

"Daddy?""

I turned.

"Yes, baby?""

"Uncle Daniel showed me Mommy's picture.""

I frowned.

"What picture?""

"The one where Mommy was holding me.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Where did he show you?""

"On his phone.""

She looked down at her rabbit.

"He said Mommy wrote him a letter before she died.""

I knelt beside her.

"What did the letter say?""

Lily whispered:

"He said Mommy wanted him to take care of me if you ever stopped loving me.""

I closed my eyes.

Then she added something that made everyone in the room go silent.

"He showed me a picture of Mommy signing it.""

Robert immediately stood.

"Marcus, we need to find that photograph.""

Officer Harris turned toward Lily.

"Sweetheart, do you remember what the paper looked like?""

She nodded.

"It had a blue flower on it.""

Robert went completely pale.

I looked at him.

"What?""

He slowly opened his briefcase.

Then he removed a photograph of Emily's original estate documents.

The paper had a blue flower printed in its upper corner.

Robert examined it.

"That's not an ordinary letter.""

"What is it?""

He looked at me.

"It's the original emergency guardianship declaration.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Was Daniel named in it?""

Robert shook his head.

"No.""

He turned the paper over.

There was a second page attached.

And at the bottom, beneath Emily's signature, was a handwritten condition.

*Daniel Williams may only assume temporary guardianship if Marcus Williams is deceased or legally incapacitated, and only with approval from the independent family trustee.*

I stared at the words.

"Then why is Daniel claiming he can take Lily?""

Robert looked toward the window.

"Because someone has altered the document.""

He pointed to a line near the bottom.

The original condition had been crossed out.

A replacement sentence had been typed above it.

*Daniel Williams shall assume immediate guardianship upon request.*

My stomach dropped.

Robert examined the altered signature.

Then he whispered:

"Marcus, this isn't the only thing Daniel changed.""

He turned the second page toward me.

The witness signature was clearly visible.

I recognized the name immediately.

It belonged to someone who had attended Emily's funeral.

Someone who had stood beside me and promised to protect Lily.

*Vanessa Williams.*

And beneath her signature was the date.

Two months before she married me.

I stared at the document.

My wife hadn't simply participated in Daniel's plan after entering our family.

She had helped prepare the legal trap before she ever became my wife.

But the most devastating discovery was still waiting in the final paragraph.

Emily had written one last instruction.

*If Daniel and Vanessa ever act together, investigate the person who introduced them.*

I slowly looked at Robert.

"Who introduced them?""

He swallowed.

May you like

Then he answered:

"Your father.""
