Chapter 10: What My Mother Buried Beneath the Estate

"There's a sealed basement beneath the estate.""

Andrew Carter's words kept echoing in my head long after the call ended.

I immediately contacted Robert.

He arrived at my house less than an hour later carrying an old leather briefcase.

Rachel was upstairs with Lily, reading her a bedtime story.

I placed the phone recording of Andrew's conversation on the dining table.

Robert listened without interrupting.

When it ended, he slowly removed his glasses.

"Marcus, I was afraid this would happen.""

I stared at him.

"You knew about the basement?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because your mother specifically instructed me not to reveal its existence unless someone attempted to transfer the estate illegally.""

I felt my anger rising.

"Everyone seems to know secrets about my family except me!""

Robert opened his briefcase.

Inside were several architectural drawings, old property photographs, and a sealed envelope.

"Your mother purchased the estate through a private company almost thirty years ago. Beneath the main building is a reinforced storage facility.""

"What was stored there?""

"Original family records. Property deeds. Financial agreements. Some personal documents.""

"Why hide them?""

Robert looked directly at me.

"Because your grandfather discovered that someone had been attempting to steal property from the family through forged inheritance documents.""

I stared at him.

"Someone in our family?""

Robert nodded.

"Your grandfather suspected Daniel's father.""

I froze.

Daniel and I had different mothers, but the same father.

My father had died when I was young, and my mother had raised us both.

"You're saying my father was involved?""

"No. Your grandfather suspected that Daniel's father had been falsifying financial records before his death. He never proved it.""

I sat down.

"Why would my mother protect those records?""

"Because they contained evidence of what happened.""

Robert slid the sealed envelope across the table.

"Your mother wanted Lily to inherit everything without being burdened by the family's history. But she also wanted the truth preserved.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of my mother standing in front of the estate.

Beside her was a little boy.

Daniel.

He looked about eight years old.

On the back, my mother had written:

*I promised him I would protect both boys. I never promised to let him destroy their future.*

I looked at Robert.

"What does that mean?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

My phone rang.

Officer Harris.

"Mr. Williams, we've received information that Daniel is already at the estate.""

I stood immediately.

"What's he doing there?""

"He's meeting representatives of Northbridge Family Consulting.""

"Are you going to stop him?""

"We're obtaining the necessary authorization to secure the property and investigate the attempted transfer. I need you to stay away from the location until we arrive.""

I looked at the architectural drawings.

"Officer, my brother is opening something my mother specifically ordered to remain sealed.""

"We understand.""

"What if he destroys the evidence?""

There was a pause.

"We're moving as quickly as we can.""

After the call, Robert examined the drawings.

He pointed toward a small rectangular area beneath the eastern wing.

"Here.""

"What?""

"The entrance to the basement.""

I studied the diagram.

"Is there another way in?""

"An exterior staircase, but your mother had it sealed years ago.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"She discovered someone had entered without authorization.""

I remembered the message Emily had left.

Daniel knows what happened to our daughter before she was born.

The photograph of Claire.

The forged documents.

The hidden inheritance.

Everything was connected.

Then Rachel came downstairs.

"Marcus, Lily is asking for you.""

I went upstairs.

My daughter was sitting in bed, holding her rabbit.

"Hey, princess.""

She looked at me.

"Daddy, are you going somewhere?""

I sat beside her.

"Not without telling you.""

She hesitated.

"Can I ask you something?""

"Anything.""

"Is Uncle Daniel angry because Mommy gave me the big house?""

I froze.

"Who told you that?""

"Vanessa.""

My heart tightened.

"She told you about the house?""

Lily nodded.

"She said Mommy left me something special, and Uncle Daniel wanted it.""

I gently brushed her hair away from her forehead.

"Your mommy wanted you to have a happy life. That's all.""

Lily looked down.

"Did Uncle Daniel take something from Mommy?""

I couldn't answer immediately.

Then I kissed her forehead.

"He's going to have to explain a lot of things.""

She wrapped her arms around me.

"Don't let him take me, Daddy.""

I held her tightly.

"Never.""

Downstairs, my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of the estate's basement entrance.

The heavy metal door was open.

And Daniel was standing beside it.

Beneath the photograph was one sentence.

*Your mother left you one last surprise. Ask Daniel why he buried the original birth certificate.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

*Lily Williams is not the only child named in the sealed records.*
