Chapter 5: The Necklace That Exposed Everything

Emily's necklace had disappeared three months after Vanessa moved into our house.

It was a delicate gold necklace with a tiny heart-shaped pendant.

Emily had worn it almost every day.

After she died, I kept it inside a velvet jewelry box in our bedroom.

I had planned to give it to Lily when she turned eighteen.

When it disappeared, Vanessa told me she had probably misplaced it while cleaning.

I believed her.

Now, standing in my dining room, I realized I might have been wrong about far more than I could bear.

"Where is my wife's necklace?"" I asked.

Vanessa stared at me.

"I don't know.""

"Lily says Daniel took pictures of her and wanted the necklace.""

"She's confused.""

I looked at my daughter.

"Sweetheart, can you tell me what happened?""

Lily sat up, clutching Rachel's hand.

"Uncle Daniel came upstairs when you were working.""

"Was Vanessa with him?""

She nodded.

"He asked me where Mommy's pretty necklace was.""

My throat tightened.

"What did you tell him?""

"I said it was in your drawer.""

Vanessa suddenly interrupted.

"That's enough. She's tired.""

Officer Miller turned toward her.

"Ma'am, let her finish.""

Lily continued.

"Uncle Daniel opened the little box. Then he took Mommy's necklace and put it in his pocket.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why?""

She pressed her lips together.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"Because Daniel needed to prove you had agreed to sell Emily's personal belongings.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"He said the necklace could be used as evidence that you were liquidating her estate.""

I shook my head.

"I never sold anything.""

"I know.""

"Then why would you help him?""

Vanessa began crying again.

"Because he said everything would be easier once Lily was gone.""

Officer Harris leaned forward.

"Where is the necklace now?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"In Daniel's office.""

"Which office?""

"His private office at the bank.""

Officer Harris immediately wrote down the address.

I turned toward her.

"How long has my brother been planning this?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Since before our wedding.""

The room went silent.

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

"What?""

She swallowed.

"Daniel introduced us.""

I stared at her.

I remembered that evening clearly.

Daniel had invited me to a charity dinner. Vanessa had been sitting beside him, wearing a red dress and laughing at one of his jokes.

He'd told me she was a wonderful woman.

He'd encouraged me to ask her out.

I'd even thanked him afterward.

"You knew him before I met you?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Of course.""

"How long?""

"Almost a year.""

I took a step backward.

"Why?""

She looked down.

"Daniel said you needed someone who could help with Lily.""

I almost laughed.

"So this entire marriage was arranged?""

"Not exactly.""

"Then explain it.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Daniel told me you were lonely. He said you had a large house, a successful business, and a daughter with a substantial inheritance. He said if I married you, I could help him gain access to the trust.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"My own brother introduced me to a woman so he could steal from my child?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Officer Harris asked another question.

"Did Daniel offer you money?""

She nodded.

"How much?""

"Two hundred thousand dollars.""

Rachel gasped.

I looked at Vanessa.

"And you agreed to starve Lily for that?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't think it would go this far.""

I pointed toward the hallway.

"There's a mattress in my laundry room.""

"I know.""

"My daughter was eating garbage.""

"I know!""

"She was afraid to call me because you threatened her!""

Vanessa started sobbing.

"I was under pressure!""

I lowered my voice.

"Emily died trusting me to protect our daughter. And I brought you into our home.""

For the first time, Vanessa had no answer.

Officer Harris received a call.

He listened for several seconds, then walked back toward us.

"Mr. Williams, we've contacted the financial institution. There are irregularities involving the trust account.""

"What kind of irregularities?""

"Several transactions were authorized using credentials associated with your brother.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Can the money be recovered?""

"That will depend on the investigation. We're also contacting the institution holding the trust.""

He paused.

"There's another issue.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"The guardianship application was submitted with a supporting psychological assessment.""

My stomach tightened.

"What assessment?""

"A report claiming Lily suffers from severe behavioral problems and requires residential placement.""

I stared at him.

"She's six years old.""

"I understand.""

"Who wrote it?""

Officer Harris checked the document.

"Dr. Stephen Miller. A licensed child psychologist.""

I had never heard that name.

Then Rachel spoke.

"Marcus, look at the date.""

I examined the report.

It had been signed two weeks earlier.

But Lily hadn't attended any psychological appointment.

Not once.

"How did this doctor examine my daughter?""

Officer Harris looked toward Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

"Daniel arranged everything.""

"Where?""

"At a clinic.""

"Which clinic?""

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she gave us an address.

Officer Miller made a note.

At that moment, my phone rang again.

It was an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke urgently.

"Mr. Williams? My name is Patricia. I'm the director of Westbrook Children's Residence.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why are you calling me?""

"We received a placement application for your daughter.""

I looked at Officer Harris.

"Is she still scheduled to arrive tomorrow?""

There was a pause.

"Actually, sir, there's a problem.""

"What problem?""

"The person who submitted the paperwork paid for a six-month private placement. But when our staff reviewed the documents, we noticed something unusual.""

"What?""

"The application states that Lily has no living relatives willing to care for her.""

I felt my blood boil.

"That's a lie. I'm her father.""

"Yes, sir. That's why I'm calling.""

She lowered her voice.

"There's something else you should know. Your brother personally visited our facility yesterday.""

I gripped the phone.

"What did he say?""

"He asked whether we could keep Lily somewhere she wouldn't be able to contact her family.""

The room went silent.

Then Patricia added:

"He also requested that her arrival remain confidential.""

I closed my eyes.

May you like

Daniel wasn't simply trying to gain custody.

He was trying to make my daughter disappear.
