Chapter 11: The Birth Certificate Nobody Was Supposed to Find

I didn't sleep that night.

At 6:30 the following morning, Officer Harris called.

"We've secured access to the estate.""

"Did you find Daniel?""

"Not yet. His vehicle is there, but the property appears empty.""

I gripped the phone.

"What about the basement?""

"The entrance was forced. We're documenting everything.""

"Did you find the records?""

"We found several storage cabinets. Some documents appear to have been removed.""

I closed my eyes.

"Which documents?""

"We're still identifying them.""

I asked whether Robert could accompany the investigators because he had handled the estate's legal arrangements.

Officer Harris agreed.

Within an hour, Rachel was watching Lily while Robert and I drove to the property under police supervision.

The estate stood behind a tall iron gate, surrounded by old oak trees.

It was larger than I'd imagined.

A three-story stone building with boarded windows and a neglected garden.

Daniel's black SUV was parked beside the entrance.

The front door stood open.

Officer Harris met us inside.

"Mr. Williams, I need you to understand that this is an active investigation.""

"I understand.""

He led us downstairs.

The basement door had been forced open.

Beyond it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

The air smelled of dust and damp stone.

At the bottom, we found a large underground room.

Metal filing cabinets lined the walls.

Several had been opened.

Papers covered the floor.

A broken lock lay beside a wooden desk.

Robert examined the room.

"Your mother kept everything organized.""

Officer Harris pointed toward the empty shelves.

"Someone removed multiple storage boxes.""

I walked toward the desk.

There was a framed photograph of my mother.

Beside it sat a small brass key.

I picked it up.

Underneath was a handwritten note.

*Marcus, if you are here, Daniel has finally made his move. Look behind the third cabinet.*

I turned toward the wall.

Officer Harris helped move the cabinet.

Behind it was a narrow metal safe built into the stone.

The brass key fit.

Inside were two envelopes and a small leather folder.

Robert carefully opened the first envelope.

It contained an original birth certificate.

I looked at the name.

*Emma Claire Carter.*

The date of birth matched the little girl Claire had shown us.

But beneath the child's information was a section identifying the father.

*Daniel Williams.*

I stared.

"Why would my mother have this?""

Robert examined the paper.

Then he opened the second envelope.

Inside was a hospital record.

The date was six years earlier.

The hospital was the same one where Lily had been born.

I frowned.

"Why would Lily's birth records be here?""

Robert read the document.

His expression changed.

"Marcus...""

"What?""

He handed me the paper.

It was a medical authorization form.

The patient's name was Emily Williams.

The document described a request to change the beneficiary information attached to Lily's inheritance after her birth.

But there was something unusual.

A second child was mentioned.

*Emma Carter.*

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What does this mean?""

Robert continued reading.

"It appears your mother discovered that Daniel had attempted to register an interest in Lily's trust using Emma's birth records.""

"Why?""

"Because he was trying to establish that both children had a financial claim under the same family arrangement.""

I shook my head.

"That's impossible.""

Robert pointed to another document.

It was an affidavit signed by my mother.

According to the affidavit, Daniel had attempted to claim that his daughter, Emma, was entitled to a portion of the family inheritance because she had been born before a certain trust amendment took effect.

But my mother had rejected the claim.

She had written a separate declaration confirming that Lily was the sole beneficiary of the estate.

Officer Harris examined the documents.

"These could be significant. We'll need to verify their authenticity.""

I looked at the leather folder.

Inside was a handwritten letter from Daniel.

I recognized his handwriting immediately.

It was dated three months after Lily's birth.

Mother,

You promised me that I wouldn't be left with nothing.

*Marcus has everything. The business. The house.

Emily's trust. And now Lily gets the estate.*

I have Emma to think about.

If you refuse to help me, I'll make sure Marcus eventually understands what this family has done to me.

My hands began shaking.

Daniel had blamed everyone except himself.

He had abandoned his own daughter, stolen from his niece, and manipulated Vanessa.

All because he believed life had given me more than him.

Robert opened the final document.

It was a legal agreement signed by Daniel and my mother.

The title read:

*VOLUNTARY WAIVER OF FINANCIAL CLAIMS AND GUARDIANSHIP RIGHTS.*

Daniel had signed it willingly.

He had received a payment of $80,000 in exchange for relinquishing any claim to the estate.

I stared at the date.

It was six years old.

"Why would he sign this?""

Robert answered quietly.

"Because your mother paid him to stay away from Lily's inheritance.""

I looked at the signature.

My brother had already received money.

And now he was trying to steal everything again.

Suddenly, Officer Miller called from the other side of the room.

"Sir! We found something.""

He was standing beside a filing cabinet.

Inside was a small envelope marked:

*FOR THE CHILDREN.*

Officer Harris opened it.

There were two photographs.

One showed Lily as a newborn in Emily's arms.

The other showed Emma in Claire's arms.

Between them was a handwritten note.

*These two girls are innocent. Whatever happens between the adults, neither child should ever pay for it.*

I felt tears gathering in my eyes.

My mother had known both girls deserved protection.

But someone had ignored her wishes.

Officer Harris looked through the remaining papers.

Then he found a recent document.

A transfer agreement dated three days earlier.

Daniel had signed it.

The buyer was Northbridge Family Consulting.

The asset was the entire Carter estate.

And the sale price was listed as $3.4 million.

I looked at Robert.

"He can't sell it.""

"No," Robert replied.

"Not without legal authority.""

Officer Harris photographed the document.

Then his phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

His expression hardened.

"What do you mean he has her?""

I stepped toward him.

"Who?""

He looked directly at me.

"Mr. Williams, we need to return to your house immediately.""

My stomach dropped.

"What happened?""

May you like

Officer Harris lowered his voice.

"Your brother has contacted your daughter.""
