Chapter 3: The Guardian Who Wasn't Her Father

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Two officers entered the house while another spoke with Rachel and Lily in the living room.

Vanessa immediately changed her attitude.

She began crying before the first officer had even finished introducing himself.

"Thank goodness you're here," she said, wiping her cheeks.

"My husband is having some kind of breakdown.""

Officer Harris looked at me.

"Sir, can you explain what happened?""

I handed him the notebook.

"My daughter has been denied food and locked in that laundry room. I found her searching the garbage for something to eat.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's not true!""

Officer Harris glanced at the notebook.

"Ma'am, is this your handwriting?""

She hesitated.

"It's a private journal.""

"Did you write these entries?""

"I was documenting her behavior.""

"Why does it say she wasn't allowed to eat?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Because she refuses to behave!""

Officer Harris closed the notebook.

"That's not an acceptable explanation.""

His partner, Officer Miller, walked toward the laundry room.

He returned carrying the mattress and several photographs he'd taken.

"There's a lock on the outside of the door," he said quietly.

Officer Harris nodded.

"Mr. Williams, we'd like to speak with your daughter in a safe environment.""

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting beside Rachel, holding her stuffed rabbit.

"Will you take me away, Daddy?"" she whispered.

I crouched in front of her.

"Nobody is taking you anywhere without me knowing, sweetheart.""

Officer Miller knelt beside us.

"Hi, Lily. I'm Officer Miller. Can I ask you something?""

She nodded.

"Did someone tell you not to eat?""

Lily looked at Vanessa.

My wife immediately interrupted.

"She's confused. She's always had trouble telling the truth.""

Officer Harris raised his hand.

"Ma'am, please don't interrupt.""

Lily lowered her eyes.

Then she spoke so quietly that everyone leaned closer.

"Vanessa said if I told Daddy, she would send me away.""

Officer Miller exchanged a glance with his partner.

"Did she ever hurt you?""

Lily slowly pulled up her sleeve.

The purple marks were still visible.

"She grabbed me when I tried to open the door.""

Rachel covered her mouth.

I felt my stomach twist.

Officer Harris asked Vanessa to step outside.

She refused.

"You can't do this! I live here!""

"Ma'am, we need to speak with you separately.""

Vanessa pointed at me.

"He put those ideas in her head! He wants to get rid of me because he doesn't want to share his money!""

I stared at her.

"What money?""

She froze.

Officer Harris noticed.

"What money are you referring to?""

Vanessa immediately looked away.

I remembered the folder upstairs.

The confidential documents.

The proposed custody agreement.

And Lily's inheritance.

"Officer, there's something else.""

I went upstairs and returned with the folder.

Officer Harris opened it on the dining table.

Inside were several documents concerning Lily's late mother's trust.

The trust had been established by Emily's parents shortly before Emily died. It was worth approximately $740,000, and Lily was the sole beneficiary.

I had trusted my younger brother, Daniel, to help manage the financial arrangements.

Daniel worked in banking and had always been good with paperwork.

At least, that's what I'd believed.

Officer Harris examined the documents.

"Mr. Williams, did you sign this guardianship application?""

"No.""

"Are you familiar with the person named here?""

I looked down.

*Proposed Guardian: Daniel Williams.*

My own brother.

I felt as if someone had punched me.

"Why is my brother listed?""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Daniel is a responsible man.""

I looked at her.

"You've been working with him?""

She said nothing.

I opened the next page.

It contained a statement claiming I had neglected Lily, worked excessively, and was emotionally incapable of raising her.

There was even a fabricated account of me leaving her alone overnight.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

Except the signature wasn't mine.

Officer Harris studied it.

"Do you recognize this signature?""

"It's supposed to be mine.""

"But you didn't sign it?""

"Absolutely not.""

The officer placed the document inside a protective evidence sleeve.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

*Don't make this harder than it needs to be. Vanessa told me everything. We can settle this privately.*

I stared at the screen.

Before I could respond, another message appeared.

*The transfer is already arranged. Lily leaves tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. Don't ruin her future.*

I felt my fingers go cold.

I showed the messages to Officer Harris.

"He's planning to take my daughter.""

Officer Harris immediately asked for Daniel's contact information.

Vanessa suddenly began shouting.

"Marcus, stop! You don't know what you're doing!""

I turned toward her.

"Then tell me what I don't know.""

She started crying again.

"Daniel was only trying to help!""

"Help with what? Taking my daughter?""

"He said the trust could pay for her care!""

"Her care?""

I pointed toward the laundry room.

"Is that what you call this?""

Vanessa looked down.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run colder than anything I'd heard that afternoon.

"Daniel said once Lily was gone, everything would finally be ours.""

I stepped closer.

"What does that mean?""

She wiped her face.

"He said the guardianship would give him control of the trust. He promised we'd start over somewhere else.""

"Somewhere else?""

Vanessa nodded.

"After the money was released.""

Officer Harris immediately looked up.

"Did Daniel tell you how he intended to obtain control of the trust?""

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she looked toward the folder.

"He had a document saying Marcus had already agreed to surrender parental rights.""

I stared at her.

"Where is that document?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Instead, she slowly reached into her handbag.

She pulled out a second folder.

Inside was a photocopy of my driver's license, my employment information, and another document bearing my forged signature.

But something else was attached.

A photograph.

Daniel was standing outside a private boarding facility with a woman in a dark blue suit.

On the back, someone had written:

*FINAL PLACEMENT CONFIRMATION — LILY WILLIAMS.*

Officer Harris took the photograph.

"Where did you get this?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Daniel sent it.""

My phone rang.

The caller ID showed Daniel's name.

I answered and put it on speaker.

"Daniel.""

His voice sounded unusually calm.

"Marcus. Finally.""

"Where is my daughter supposed to go tomorrow?""

There was a brief silence.

Then he said something I would never forget.

"She's going somewhere you should have sent her months ago.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"You're not taking Lily.""

Daniel laughed softly.

"You still don't understand, brother.""

"What don't I understand?""

His voice dropped.

"That the guardianship papers aren't the only documents I have with your signature.""

Then the call ended.

Officer Harris immediately requested a copy of the recording.

I looked down at Lily.

She was watching me from Rachel's arms.

"Daddy?""

I walked over and kissed her forehead.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Does Uncle Daniel know where I sleep?""

I stopped breathing for a moment.

"Why would you ask that?""

Lily clutched her rabbit.

"Because he came to the laundry room one night.""

My blood turned to ice.

"What?""

She began trembling.

"He told Vanessa to make sure I didn't tell you about the little black box.""

I looked at the officers.

Officer Miller immediately stood.

"What little black box, Lily?""

She pointed upstairs.

"Vanessa keeps it under her bed.""

And when Officer Harris opened it twenty minutes later, we discovered that the plan to take my daughter had started long before I ever met Vanessa.

I can continue with Chapters 4–6, keeping the same characters, escalating revelations, and dramatic pacing.
